Jit, I am really scared of dictatorship or Martial Law for that matter. But, I agree that democracy should have effective mechanism to deal with religious extremisim. The perpetrators of communal hatred must be dealth with iron hand - irrespective of their religion and that is very much feasible in the present format of governance also. We can do so by formulating stringent laws which is possible by sending right people to the legislatures. Unfortunately, we have not been doing our duty of electing the right people honestly. We have been simply talking and not doing anything worthwhile. When it came to cast our vote, we either abstained or misused the facility in favour of wrong people. We are always influenced by people who have either a dynastic tag or have rich background. A commoner can hardly win an election. I agree with you that we should not espouse the policy of religious appeasement which, unfortuntely, is the order of the day.
Pakistan is not the only failed state due to Martial Law, there are some other countries as well. Zimbabwe and Myanmar are another two recent examples. In the past, there have been countries like Uganda, Congo, Zaire, Chile who had to suffer at the hands of Military Junta or the ruthless dictators. Things are not very cosy in Cuba, North Korea and China also which have dictatorial pattern of governance. I can quote some other examples of tiny states where people are nothing but puppets and paupers and only a few families are enjoying.

Am not sure of Muslim religion being stone aged or not as mentioned in the topic, but, certainly the idea of Martial Law is stone aged. Look at the unprecedented recoil the 'soft martial law' Like ban on few social sites imposed by the present government resulted in.

Chances of a dictator, how so ever benign human at the start he may be, turning into a megalomaniac are abundantly high. History stands as a proof that any kind of autocracy it started out to be, has caused more harm than good in the long run.
Taking a cue from the present situation, it is worth noticing that the current congress government has been playing with the idea of ‘soft autocracy’ by consistently weakening the constitutional bodies like CVC, CAG, Presidential system etc, bringing in reservations to weaken bureaucracy etc etc. These moves have created a weekend society allowing a corrupt regime to thrive and sustain.
Guess what could happen if there was a martial law!!
Now coming back to the question of minorities (the topic of this thread):
1. Minorities irrespective of religion, cast, creed and community tend to carry a sense of victim hood given the very nature of being a "Minority". On the other hand, being in a majority brings a sense of self confidence. Given this, minorities need a visible atmosphere of assurance and provisions of affirmative actions to alienate a sense of fear, how so ever unfounded the sense of fear may be. Any minority tend to be conservative and protective of its basic existence due to this perennial sense of being a minority.
2. So, naturally, it is the responsibility of establishment and majority community to be visibly supportive of protecting the minority. BUT, this assurance of protection MUST not turn into Appeasement. The establishment must not overdo it. Overactive approach to minority appeasement may bring a forth a situation that the majority starts feeling a sense of betrayal. If majority chooses to react, then this may bring the two factions of society in confrontation with each other.

I think our society has reached a flashpoint where we must review our social policies. We must ensure that the social fabric remains intact and the country takes on the path of true secularism by doing away with the appeasement and divisive politics.

भाई, ख़तम करण खातिर जोर लगाया था सब ने जब vpsingh ने यो लागू करा.... कई तेरे मेरे जिसे बालक आग लगा के मर गे ... लेकिन कुछ नहीं होया. आरक्षण वही का वही रह्य..... बल्कि उसके बाद तो काफी और जातियों को मिल गया... मतलब, आरक्षण ख़तम करना कोए सरकार नहीं चाहवे...
तो एक एह तरीका स.... सब ने दे दयो.... मतलब हम ने अपना हक मिल ज्या...... हमने कोए आपत्ति नहीं की बाह्मण बानिये भी ले लें तो.....उनका हिस्सा उन ने मिलन दयो...
सब ने मिल गया तो.. आप ए ने ख़तम हो जागा आरक्षण...
एर हाँ तुरंत फायदा नहीं, हम तो भोत लेट हो रे सां.... पन्द्राह साल पहलाम या लड़ाई लड़नी चाहिए थी..... लेकिन देर आये दुरुस्त आये.....

Honest Democracy----Need so much time
Civil War-----Lots of innocents might die
How about-----hiring some mercenary to kill some corrupt politician .
One act-----rest would learn a lesson .
