The event went unnoticed by the television and print media on a day the India-Pakistan one-dayer at Karachi hogged the limelight but Sunil Mann will never forget the night he was crowned Grasim Mr India.

It was a proud moment for Mann, a farmer's son from a small village in Haryana, when he won the title at a glittering event on Saturday night.

Mann hails from Ishwarhaveli in Jhajjar district of Haryana. He left his village after schooling to pursue modelling.

"I'm proud to be the first farmer's son to win this title. For three years I was trying for this contest and God helped me to come here," Sunil Mann told IANS.

Emerging victorious from among 31 contestants, he joins his predecessors like Aryan Vaid and Bikram Saluja, who hit pay dirt in the modelling world.

Like in women's pageants, judges put questions to which Mann answered with aplomb - in Hindi.

He spoke in his typical Haryanvi accent and had no qualms in admitting that he was not very comfortable with English - a first where contestants are derided for even minor errors in tonal inflections.

It is the suave English-speaking guys who have won the title so far. So how does he attribute his victory as compared to the previous winners?

"I believe you have to speak from your heart - and when you do that God helps you an extra bit," said Mann.

Celebrities like Hrithik Roshan, Sudha Chandran, Ekta Kapoor, Farzana Contractor, Manish Malhotra, Farhan Akhtar and Poonam Dhillon among others judged the contestants.

The 10th Grasim Mr India event saw over 15,000 contestants from across the country in the preliminary rounds, but those from the Hindi belt impressed the organisers most, say sources.

Prashant Raj Sachdev an advertising professional from Mumbai won the first runner's up title. Chadigarh's Piyush Vig, who is studying computer applications was the second runner up.

Mann will represent India at the Mr International pageant in Turkish capital Ankara later this year. Aryan Vaid and Bikram Saluja won the Mr International pageants in 2000 and 2001 respectively and later became Bollywood stars.

"If you make it then you really go places and great international assignments," a participant told reporters.

Congrats for Sunil Mann and Thanks to Neeraj for sharing the info !!

Sunil Mann has certainly made Haryana being felt on Glamour front. Clear heart, true feelings and crisp of haryanvi accent made all go wooes for him.
Congratulations to Glamour dude of Haryana!!

Congrats to Sunil. He proved that a FARMER's son can do anything if he wants to and have the heart in right place. I beleive he will be a great inspiration and role model for farmers to think out of the box.

Good news, may be he becomes next Dharmendar!!! Good Luck to him and Neeraj ko bhee sukriya .. is news ko dhoond nikalne ke liye

On Saturday I saw repeat telecast.
Final question was asked to last 10 finalist... answer was supposed to write within 75seconds.

Sunil mann completed within 15sec.

Ques. Is God a lady? If no then why?
ANS. by Sunil Mann, " Bhagwan ek hai, amar or azar hai".

Yeh dekh kar bahut accha laga ki sunil mann ne hindi bhasa ka prayog kiya.
Sunil Mann ki hindi main bhi kati pure desi touch tha. Sunil ka sambodhan kuch is parkar se tha.. Aadarniya Zazzo ( Resp. Judges).. :-)

dear all,
we all are proud of sunil.it is realy a new field for our boys and more than that the way sunil conducted himself was realy superb.great....
its a new opening for our boys.it is generaly seen that we, the jats try to hide our self, when the question of "expression" comes into playing.
and here sunil has proved the point.i think we need to tell our young boys and girls that we can turn this weakness into a great strengh as sunil has done....

we always feel that ,the accent is our greatest weakness as far as spoken english or hindi is concerned, but it is not the truth....
u shall all agree that all the south indians are worst as far accent is concerned. i have come into contact with many of the stalwards in the country... we are much better than them.
u all must be aware of these bhaiyyan class, who always call a school as eschool...... and my god they are the one who are ruling this country.

i request u all to do away with this experssion complex and jump into fray.. just do not worry about what ppl will think ... the only need is that we talk sense....i even heard a recording of dr radha krishan ,our late president and the great scholar... his accent was of a standard, which gave me some confidence to utter some word in english......
recently we saw our former president k r naryanan... we all heard him, so why this complex... go ahead we are the best.

an other great obsrevation ,three young role models..virender suhag...village chuddani.. dist jhajjar....ashish nehra.... village ..binola dist gurgaon.... sunil maan... village isherhedi distt jhajjar......... all got into delhi.. education ..delhi....
so lesson learnt is, march to delhi..... best place to get an exposer.. and delhi is not for off from our villages ...haryana . u p rajasthan all next to delhi.. let our boys see delhi and explore it... i feel we shall get result... do tell the youngestrs the way to delhi

Congrats to Sunil! I saw a slide show of him on rediff.com yesterday but uanle to find now.
Anyway, grt pleasure to hear about his achievement

I saw a news clipping of Sunil on NDTV last night. It shows the HERO returning home to his village. He is indeed a humble youngster. He so innocently said that his aim was to see his parents appear on TV. How sweet.

I agree with Rajinder. English is important and one should be able to read and write. Our children who are in the villages do suffer this disadvantage but with determination and focus one can excel even without being able to spaek.

We have one Sunil Maan in every street in each of our villages. What is lacking is guidance and opportunity.

MOST TOUCHING PART : -

My family is so simple. So innocent. You cannot imagine how untouched they are. They don't realise the importance of this win. When I was crowned, villagers from the surrounding areas told my parents that their son had got full marks. So they are happy I have done something good. And they are proud of me, because I have done well in whatever I set out to do.

You know, my father told me this: I am a farmer. I will sell my property for you if that is what it takes for you to succeed. Do whatever you want to do, but do it with good intentions. Leave the rest to God.

Their prayers have been answered. God has sent some good people in my life. It wouldn't have worked if a bad person had blessed me.

Life is a whirl of shoots, meetings and dinners for Mann just now. He is not making any plans but to go home and to take each day as it comes. Later this year, he will represent India at the Mr International pageant at Ankara, Turkey. But before that:

I am off to Delhi after a dinner with (Grasim Chairman) Kumaramangalam Birla, some photoshoots, and a few appearances on MTV and Channel [V].

From Delhi I will finally go home. NDTV will accompany me from Delhi to my village. I can't tell you what going home now means to me. I can't express what I am feeling. I don't know what I will tell my parents when I get there. Maybe touch their feet and ask their blessings.

But yes, I will get my mother to make simple home-cooked food. After so long, I will have one subzi, a lassi or dahi and chapattis. And my sweet dish will be gud (jaggery).

I won Rs 3 lakhs as the prize for this title. I will gift my sisters some good saris or salwar kameezes. But the first thing I will do when I get home is present my mother with a gold necklace worth Rs 40,000. She has always wanted one.
