Hi,

We have a daughter who is 4.5 years today.

We are moving to India by end of this year or early next year. Our biggest worry these days is the education for our daughter.

I am hearing lots of stories which is making us very worried.
I just want to to know that what will be her grade when she is in India and what all she should know.

One goes to Grade one in Canada/USA when you are Six and they are slow also in teaching.

That is why we are teaching my daughter English and Math at home and Kumon (kind of tution) and referring NCERT books to make her little competetive. At present she can do basic reading and sometimes find out the meaning of stories. She can navigate on computer quite well and play on her websites related to reading and math.
She can do counting upto 1000 and addition upto +5, subtraction upto -5.
We have recently started Hindi and she can only indentify the Hindi alphabets at present.

Now can anybody please advise us that are we going on the right path?
Is my daughter very behind from Indian standards?

There is no way we will not move so we have to be ready for her education.
What is the age for Grade one in India.

I think she will be 5.5 when we come to India. What will be her grade when comes.

I need some very sincere advice about her age eligibility and min requirements at school.

Please Please lets us know.

I will appreciate your help.
Regards.
Sushma

First of all, Sushma ji, welcome to Jatland as a new member of this great site.

I presume you are doing injustice to your daughter by teaching Maths and English at this tender age of 4.5 years. This “kind of tuition” at home at her early age may ruin her childhood which nature has reserved for playing and learning in a natural way. Canadians and Americans are doing the right thing by starting teaching the child alphabets at the age of six – because it fits into child psychology and makes him/her a good personality. You should stop worrying – children pick up very quickly and things will be alright within a short time after arrival in India.

Welcome Sushma ji to Jatland.

To substantiate deshwal Sirs comment :

I recollect this doha:

dheere dheere re mana dheere sab kuch hoye
maali seenche 100 ghada , ritu aaye fal hoye !

I bet she s doing well by what u described , wont have any probs .

Hi Sushma

Please do't worry and listen to the odd stories. I have moved back from London and my 12 year old son is happy and doing well.

There are these International and World schools coming up in India which follow the Cambridge and IB programmes. Infact the traditional schools like Doon are also opting for these programmes. Let your daughter enjoy and lean at her tender pace and Kumon being a repetitive time sensitive form of tution is not very good for young children as it can put them off studies and can be very monotonous for young minds.

seriously do not worry..kids at this age are amazing.

I was 6 when i got into first grade and most of my friends also were of same age. But now a days i think its 5. But still i see lot of ppl send their kids at an age of 3-4 for nursery or kids gardsn(KG) and all that to make the child familiar with the outside environment(which i am very much against of) but still the grade 1 age is 5-6. Kindly ponder over DN Deswal ji's post.

Not that simple....

Madam,

A child of 5.5 – 6 Years should go to Class I. The following are the requirements as far as CBSE Syllabus is concerned.

Hindi: To be able to compose 2, 3 & 4 letter words like Tamtam, Tamatar, Shalgam (I don’t know how to type in Hindi, so please understand). Names of five fruits, vegetables, flowers, colors, animals, birds. Hindi ‘matrayein’. Counting 1 to 10. Five sentences on a simple topic like Cow, Mother, etc.

English: Reading simple sentences (This is a cat). Use of in, on, under, this, that, those, these. Use of a, an, the, is, am, are. Singular & plural. Opposites. Dictation. Simple Q & A.

Maths: Count of 1 to 300. Writing 1 to 20.Simple additions and subtraction. Carry, borrow. Tables 1 to 12. What comes before or after sums. Jumbled form. Count and write.

General Awareness: Parts of body, seasons, days of week, months, picture composition, names of plants, trees, wild animals. Etc.

The reality is that the child would be required to undergo a test of sorts (despite all rulings) before he/she can seek admission in any good school.

Regards,

JS Malik

Thank you Jagmohan Ji.

It is a great help. My daughter is ok with everything except Hindi and I am working on it.

Should I really worry about this test or just take it easy and deal with it when I get there.

Please advice.

ha ha ha :D
Sushma Ji yeh Jatland hai...here people will tell you everything except try
to actually answer your question. Welcome... :D

Vaise, while I would agree with many of the sentiments expressed here
I would still be pretty cautious and make sure you've done your
homework and know what to expect. At least Col Malik has provided some
factual information that you may find useful. Nowadays with hard academic
focus starting as early as 3 years a child can certainly face initial difficulties
(but not unsurmountable ones at such an early age). As long
as the school is understanding a young child can very quickly adjust.

Based on my personal experiences (having had to make some
moves between India and abroad as a child) there is an initial period
of having to cope with change (academic, social, school environment)
which lasts about 1 year. It can be a bit challenging but after about
1 year a child is usually on par with his peers. I think for
a 5 year old it should be much easier (I had to make changes at 7, 11, 13,
16).

The language issues as well as the overall social issues (peers,
teachers, general school environment) are both tough for someone
who moves from abroad to India.

Personally I found the Indian education system rather poor. The overall
school environment and approach to education in developed countries
is far superior in my honorable opinion. I felt I was able to do well in India
due to my experience abroad even though I put significanty less effort
in India and found a lot of my India teachers intolerable.
