Guys,
Can someone walk me through the whole process of getting a website on the Internet? Including everything, right from the begining -- Doman name registration, buying server space, mapping the DNS entry to the IP, developing the webpages (what package to use? Which ones are FREE?) etc.

Please give relevant links with every step. I saw the godady.com is the cheapest place to buy domain names. server space kidhar se loon? Kya procedure hai, to map URLs with the IP I will be alloted?

Kaunsa package use karoon develop karnay kay liye? I need something free.

Jaldi reply karo yaar. A friend of mine had once mentioned that he was planning on getting a website, and I told him (without thinking) that I'll make one for him as a gift. Abhi 5 mahinay kay baad uska phone aaya ki saaalay website ka kya hua.

Help me.

u can get everything from godaddy.
just pay for url registration and server space.
Depending on if u have money or time or brains, u can decide on to buy a tool or use free ones or write ur own html code.

Thanks for the info, guys!!

I am familiar with the tech part. I was looking more for links to freebies. Found a nice HTML editor for free (1st Page 2000). Kaam chaaloo hai.

I was thinking of going for servlets. So if I need to install a run-time environment on the server side (Servlet container/JRE in this case), how do I go about it? Do the guys who provide server space, also give you the rights to install a runtime environment on their servers?

I still haven't got the actual stuff I am looking for. The 'how to' baby steps of registering and connecting.

1) Lets say I go to godaddy and get the name www.xyz.com registered.

2) Then I go to dr2.net and buy the server space (500 GB)

Now how do I connect 1 and 2??? Where do I map the www.xyz.com to the IP address provided in step 2?? (I assume they will provide me with a static IP)

If it is a personal website, you can avoid the hassle of finding the service providers. Just go to geocities.com and then register. If you need more space you can purchase is there itself. As part of the website hosting services they allow you to come up with your own html pages and then upload. Otherwise you can use their yahoo pagebuilder services which are free of charge.
