Maliks (kathia, kaathi or gathwala): The great JATS WHO FOUGHT AGAINST ALEXANDER; GATHWAAL the important clan or gotra of Jats now switched over to the name "MALIK". Though in social functions, marriages etc. they still says that their real clan name is Gathwaal, the Greeks give two forms of the word, viz. Kathaian and Kathaioi; and as per Dr. Jolly, S. Vidyalankar and K. P. Jayaswal the word, "kathai stands for their country and kathaioi, for the people. The letter 'O' gives the sound for V., they were fierce fighters and with a military strategy called "Shakta vyuha", they faced Alexander when at least 17,000 of them became martyrs. Beauty was given the highest consideration even in matters of selection of state officials. They were the only clan of Jats who practices sati pratha, in the book tribes and castes they're mentioned as Kathia or Ravi jats and are considered the same people who fought against Alexander, the author says "after much enquiry on the subject, I have come to the conclusion that the kathiaas is gathwaals of the present day have a strong claim to be considered the descendants or the same "kathaioi" who so gallantly resisted the Macedonian conqueror, they were the same known as gadavahara of the pre-kushana period. Their history were not limited to that era, how they got the title of MALIK (A Persian title given to an independent king who never lost a single war), is more interesting than anything in the world.

After 5th century A.D., the aryans of India started to embrace buddhism, as they had no more interest in spoiled form of vedic religion who after 5th century known as brahmin religion, brahmins added baseless ideas, customs and fairy tales like puranas to it, jats refused the sacred thread called janue (a thread upper caste hindus do wear over chest), now jats were anti brahminic tribe amongst the 36 royal races jats were the only who challenged brahmans supremacy, brahmans fumed up to knew that., jats had two options accept janue or death, during the course of time the great gathwaal jats settled in different areas of northwest india. In Gujarat they founded kathiawaad, in punjab, haryana, western up they shared lordships with other jats they were welcomed by other jats because they refused Alexander's rule and left that area. To took revenge brahmins sent one lakh rajputs to teach lesson to haryana jats, during that time jats were not so powerful to defeat an army of One lakh furnished warriors, even the total population of haryana was lesser than one lakh, then GATHWAAL JATS emerged as DESPERADOS.

Gathwal jats suggested to other jats that not to take part in war as we are just about to lost our existence, we would fight against rajputs, 9000 gathwaal jats gathered (including childs, womans), they made assassination attack on rajputs army, every single jat killed at least 20 rajputs even the jat girls /women fought so valiantly, within few hours rajputs lost half of their army, they blown white flag, gathwaals won that war with a massive margin as only 1500 of them died, rajput became their slaves they accepted jat culture, their customs, their language, jats offered them land to settle on, but they never gave the status of equality to rajputs, when the sultan of India got the news of jats win over rajputs, the sultan asked the gathwaal jats to share throne of north india, they said we need equal status in darbaar, sultan became happy with them and handed over the jaagirs of haryana, north rajasthan, western up and south panjab, and sultan gave the TITLE OF MALIK SAAB to them, till the date they are well respected all over. Grand salute to Malik jats.

Amazing.

I would have written 'truly' amazing, but that may confuse the readers.

Some questions.

Statement: Each of the 9,000 Gatwala Maliks killed 20 Rajputs.

That would amount to a total of 180,000 rajputs killed.( 9000X 20)

The army of the rajputs, sent by these evil Brahmins was 1 Lakh i.e 100,000

Where did the other 80,000 come from>

Could it be that they killed these Rajputs 1.8 times?( almost twice)

Perhaps Mr. Yadhav can educate us?

Why would these admittedly 'evil and irremediable' ,brahmins take revenge on the valourous Jats, for refusing to bow down to the Greeks?

Could it be they were secret agents of the Greeks?

Warm regards

Ravi sir,

I got this story from one friend on FB and as he gave me the reference of this "book by Mr. Yadav" so found a good reason to bring this story on Jatland. It may happen that 20 would have come in his saying and writer wanted to say that that massarce was so servre that one Jat killed 20, it may not be average but an exemplary indication to bravery of our jat warriors.

Rajpal Sir, I have asked the same guy to get me all the details asked by you. Meanwhile, see if you could get it through your network or any famous bookcenter or publisher, the book with title "History of Haryana" by K.C. Yadav

Friend,

You are a seasoned intellectual and doing a lot of research. Therefore, please avoid gossip or heresay to treat as historical fact and also kindly ensure full citation [Author, name of the book, year and place of publication and page] in your topics of History before posting them on the discussion section of Jat history. This would add authenticity to your statement and value to the contents of the Jatland.com Kindly treat it as friendly advice, please.

Thanks and regards,

PS: The Jatland members must use K C Yadav with very caution so far as the historical references about our community are concerned in his book are biased against us.

Sir, I would like to know about the facts on which you found K.C.Yadav as a biased writer, so that in future we would be aware of taking his books as reference.

Thanks!

Dear Phool Kumar and other readers

There is no intention on my part to lecture others, or to point out others shortcomings.

The idea of my participation is to bring out a credible history of our people.

Unfortunately apart from bias from some historians, we also have the likes of K C Yadhav, who write , what I would call, utter rubbish.

Sadly this rubbish sometimes gets posted on the net and gets widespread, and some people accept it as valid.

Rather than demolish his arguments, a painful and distasteful task, I would prefer if readers and fellow students of History, approach his writings with the same attitude they approach their own professional subject, be it engineering, medicine, farming, housecleaning.

The idea is to NOT accept statements made uncritically.

One should examine the statements from a common sense point of view, and only accept them if they make some sense.

Buddhism, contrary to what Yadhav writes, did not flourish in India in 5th century AD, it had already gone into decline centuries prior.

How is that this Yadhav person does not even know that?

There is no need to defend this writer

. He wrote every jat killed 20 rajputs. If he meant otherwise he could have said so.

The issue is that he claims the jats killed twice the number of the rajput army. It is his claim,he has to defend it, not you or me.

If he cannot get his basic math right, how can he get anything else right ?

Is it really worth even looking for his book, let alone reading it?

Warm regards

Ravi Chaudhary

I forgot to add that the term Rajput was not invented until the 10Th century +. pron=babky the 12 century AD.

Yadhav has the Rajputs in the 5th century AD.

K C Yadav's example

We have page - [Wiki]Bandechhe[/Wiki] on JL Wiki. It refers to K.C. Yadav as under:

The noted historian, K.C. Yadav says that most of the Jat tribes came to the Punjab in eleventh century during the days of Mahmud of Ghazni and orhan. Bandechha too are believed to have migrated to the province at this time. According to some traditions, this clan originated from the village Fatehgarh Churian of Amritsar district.

How come - most of the Jat tribes came to the Punjab in eleventh century ?

Jat clans have been living in Punjab since very ancient times. K C Yadav's above finding is very surprising and misleading !!!

I would like to thank Ravi Sir, Rajpal Sir and for recent post from Laxman Sir. It was first time me reading an abstract from Mr. K.C.Yadav book and that too just one page article. For sure if would have read any of his complete book, I must have taken care for selecting phrases from his book.

But my main intention was to find out and as said in title of this article too that "How Gathwala Jats got the title "Malik". My grand father (if it is not displayed against my name, myself is a "Malik Gathwala Jat") used to tell me the same kind of story, in which he used to mention me the incidents like "winning some battles against other Hindu clans (most probably the Rajputs or someother yet to know) and then receiving offer from Mughal rulers and then adoring the title "Malik" as a status equal in power and intelligence to that time muslims rulers itself, so got convinced easily with the abstract of book by K.C.'s, which around by depicts the same kind of story as told by my grand father in my childhood.

I hope I would soon come to know the full and real story behind my question in title.

Thanks again to all you genius at Jatland!

The Gathwala Malik Khap is one the larger Khaps Haryana and U.P.

The Malik title is usually used, and not Gathwal(a).

The Malik tiltle is similar to ' chaudhary' which has like Mailk now become a surname.
The goth is Gathwal and not Malik.

The history has to be traced through the goth.

Their are similarities in the name between Gatwal(a) and Gahadwal or Gahardwal. The latter were found ruling in the 10th to 14th century, as dynastic rulers. They have left behind temples and other monuments.

They may well have been a family of Gatwalaa) who later lost prominence.

The proposed Greek connection - Kathai(oi), deserves attention, and should be looked at. Prima facie the phonetics however do not line up.

Friend,

Yadava's this contention is absurd regarding Rajputs in view of the findings of Historian Pramata Saran, who in his research book on medieval India has concluded that the word Rajput denoting a caste/community did not come into use before 8th Century A D in India.

Thanks

Raviji, you are writing goth for Gotra ? It shows south Indian style of writing got.

The phonetics of 'got' is got as in hot.

Goth is also wrong - the phonetics is as the' loth' of 'sloth'

it should bt' go-th'

I will use whatever you suggest

Warm regards

Ravi

In south India soft t (त) is written as 'th' and hard t (ट) is written as 't'. So prakrat गोत =got and sanskrit गोत्र = Gotra

Ravi Ji,

The wiki page on origin of the Gathwal's says that they are a branch of Chohans, which does not seem to hold good.

The full quote is:

"They have now switched over to the name
Malik though in social functions, ceremonies and marriages etc. they still tell their gotra as Gathwal. Being good organizers they were called Gathwale. Origin of this gotra is word Organization (संगठन). [SUP][2][/SUP]It is a branch of Chauhan.Gathwals are possibly the Gada (गद) of Mahabharata period or Gadavahara of the pre-Kushana and early Kushana period Gadavhara of Gadvar is simply changed into Gadval / Gathval by replacing the last “ R” with its sibilant interchangeable “L”"

This needs further research as to ascertain their origin and to verify their connection with Chauhans, Gada, Gadvar, Gathwal and then change over to Malik.

Thanks

Gathwala origin ka to mujhe pata nahin sirs, but "malik" origin ka as per my late grand father own words, wo kahte they ki "Malik" title humko muslims se equal status ke roop mein mila tha....aur kaise mila tha isi chain ki ooper ki ek post mein likh chuka hu main.....ki Gathala Jats ne Rajputs ko haraya tha jisse khus ho ke us time Mughal emperors ne "Gathwala Jats" ko pahle to unke saath shamil hone proposal diya tha, jisko inhone naa kar di...to fir unhone apni most decorated title "malik" propose ki jisko Gathwalon ne happily accept kiya aur tab se hum Malik kahlaaye......aur ye worldwide fact hai ki muslims mein sabse bada surname bhi "Malik" hi hai.....rest I am waiting for my next trip to India, to get out the real history of Gathwala's, which I am going to search out in fields by going to Malik-Gathwala villages, including my own and our Khap-Head village in "Ulhana-Gohana" and at "Malik bhawan-Gohana" and wherever it it will be possible for me to go.
