Us is the largest economy in the world and they faced the
biggest natural calamity last week in form of hurricane Katrina.
What are the possible effects are due for US ecinomy after
this disaster and where US stands to manage natural disasters?
This is a big question these days in international current affairs.
As America is asking and accepting international aid.
There are accusations on relief workers for discriminating betwween
whites and blacks.Still so many people are without food and drinking water, even after one week?
No power supply could be established for more than 4-5 lac
people in Luisiana.

Many Jatland members are living in US and they have better idea
what is going on in hurricane hit areas and what are the possible
effects of this disaster on world's only super power, most devoleped
and most advanced nation?

Please put your view's so other members can get an idea.

I request all respected Jatlanders to give their opinion on this topic.

Thanks and regards.

Hurricane Katrine

Hello Mr. Jakar
Its a matter of concern for U.S.A. and approx 1.5 million people have been relocated because of this natural disaster. U.S.A started getting aid from the countries like U.k. and Japan, which have come forward till now. People are so scared in affected areas that they started buying weapons for self-defense after few such incidents. Sale of Weapon selling shops has increased drastically in affected areas.

As far as economic aftermaths are concerned we will come to know precisly with time .

Sorry....I am posting on a tangent but this might be intersting and related:

Quote-unquote from Times of India article:

In New Orleans there was shooting and looting when the floods came last week. When a similar inundation struck Mumbai a month earlier, there was no violence, just free vada-paav.
Residents say street vendors passed out the vada-paav to their fellow citizens wading through waist-high water in a sign that the disaster brought the city together rather than tearing it apart as appeared to happen in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
The response seems to symbolise what South Asians say is the region’s familiarity with, and resilience in the face of, numerous natural calamities.

"My assessment is that many of the problems arose as the people are not used to facing calamities. They expect complete efficiency and find it difficult to cope if it does not come about."
Incidentally; Mumbai police commissioner AN Roy confirmed there were no cases of looting, arson or violence when the floods hit.
"Even stray cases of robbery were not heard or reported," he said.

India has regularly faced natural disasters from earthquakes, storms and floods during monsoon. As a result, it has developed rapid responses for shelter and relief that while not wholly successful for long-term rehabilitation, have enabled them to handle immediate needs quickly.

Better Immune System I Suppose?

Shailendra bhai, i think...Mumbai walas [Say indians] have better immunity or they live from tragedy to tragedy....and always MOVE ON attitude. Still a tragedy is a tragedy. We are sad for Our American friends. Our govt. has offered all kind of help to Us and is waiting a word from them.

Hi ,

Last night I was watching BBC and those guys are just making fun of America.

They were saying' a world's richest nation is now getting help from these countries like bangladesh,el-salvador, Cuba etc ' ;)

I heard India have also donated 5 million dollars...

I think as par case of natural calamity US needs lot of learning from India to how to tackle it in best way....they are still relying on those simulation methods instead of facing ground reality..

Population of New Orleans = 484,674
Population of Mumbai = 12,622,500

Deaths in New Orleans within 48 hours of rain = 100

Wow Vinod! Is that all true? (Specially the part about all of New-Orleans evacuated! Or the inches of rain??? And then also that population scenario; you compared the two city's population; but what about the stats on what number of people were affected directly?)...Hmmmm, but the rest is definitely interesting I must say!

By the way I myself had just posted about the amazing comparison on the looting and the complete failure of human values when faced with a tragedy thru nature in a developed country like the US while the Mumbaities on the other hand simply taking it more then well into their stride and helping each other out in the face of danger!
But having said that, those were too quite different natural calamities and if we compare the direct impacts from nature then the stats are unfortunately quite hugely different so. Therefore I personally think that comparing anything else (other than the resilience of the residents for each) would be quite unfair,... to say the least...

Where in the equation do you wanna compare New Orleans; a built out and dense City Pounded with Category 4 Hurricane with wind speeds of maximum of 165 miles per hour... (and not to mention a City technically/incorrectly built under sea level which got submerged with flood water from the sea that rose AFTER the storm had passed!), with that of Mumbai (also built out and dense sure but not really built under the level of the sea) with two days of heavy rains (that monsoon technically brings every year and is gonna be bringing next year too???... Just some food for thought.

Jakhar bhai. petrol ke prices mein aag lage padi hai. aki kon jiya kon mara, kisiko koi parwah nahin.

Bhai petrol ka daam badhne se log marte to nahi na.
Badhia hai petrol kam "use" karenge to pollution kam hoga.
Always take things positive.
