India has become safer in last 8 years

I came across this interesting article which shows how India has become a safer place in the last 8 years(for some, it is the Congress rule):

Under Manmohan Singh, terrorism has decreased in India and Indians have become safer.

In the eight years the Congress has governed India, terrorism has declined each year, according to data from KPS Gill’s South Asia Terrorism Portal (www.satp.org). Deaths from terrorism have fallen from 3259 in 2005 to 804 last year.
The other aspect is that almost all of these deaths are from Maoist violence and from army operations in the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir, not violence by what are called Islamists.

And even in these three areas, the number of Indians being killed is in sharp decline. Deaths in Maoist violence were 367 last year (of whom 117 were terrorists, according to SATP). This is down from 602 in 2011 and 1180 the year before that.
Jammu & Kashmir saw 117 deaths last year (of which 84 were terrorists), down from 183 in 2011 and 375 (including 270 terrorists) the year before that.

The last full year Atal Behari Vajpayee was in power, 2003, as many Indians were killed in terrorist incidents (3702) as the total for the last three years under Manmohan. How many times have you heard that said before?
This is even more remarkable when we learn that the figures under the BJP excluded all Maoist violence because that wasn’t compiled under ‘terrorism’ till 2004, when Singh came to power.

Last year there were only three deaths (all three terrorists, no civilians) from terrorism in India. That is fewer than those killed in terrorism in the United States that year.

The numbers indicate that the Congress government is doing something spectacularly right, and it was actually the BJP that was soft on terror.

Now i know a lot of you will try to bash the article/author/government/MMS/me, but if you chose to do so please do it logically with substantial stats. Thanks!

What's your take on this news? What about other felonies; rapes/murders/thefts? If you agree that merely curbing terrorism makes a country safer then by all means "Kudos to Dr. Manmohan Singh for making India a better place to live !"

This is a good news. I think more work needs to be done towards upliftment of minorities. Muslims are worse off in India. Muslim population is rising but in overall India cannot neglect them.

Also fanaticism of right wing must be taken seriously! Some bad elements are dividing country on religious lines.

We have become a nation of criticizers and even if someone shows something positive, we look for an alternative argument to criticize our country.
I am trying to show something where we as a country have excelled, in fact in some of the security aspects we have gone even better than US and it is a moment to feel proud of what we have achieved.

On your point though, not related as law and order is different than terror, earlier is a law and order situation that comes under the prerogative of state govts. and depends on society as a whole.

Is this a non partisan group: if so, why does it need to give such a massive thumbs up to one party? The analysis seems very obviously skewed. Experts can analyse the data and its accuracy (given the spin, I will not take it at face value) and point out the reasons for the trend. But it is quite a claim to attribute such success to MMS. I am not an expert on this, but even on casual observation, one can say that terrorist activities got a boost worlwide after Sep 2001 attacks and the subsequent "war on terror". There were more terror attacks across the globe. There is a natural time gap in which law enforcement agencies catch up to these new challenges. There was also Gujarat in 2002, which gave a boost to Islamic religious fanaticism - just like 1984 gave a boost to punjab terrorism. As time passes, there is mean reversion - sometimes, it is as simple as that.

The right way to look at is to compare it with the world. A Global Terrorism Index was calculated for 2011 and India came 4th in that. The link below is self explanatory:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/indiahome/indianews/article-2243025/India-terror-hit-nations-year.html

Finally and most importantly, terrorism is just a political football across the globe. It gives politicians an excuse to point fingers and sway people on emotive grounds, that has not much to do with logic. More than 1 lakh people die in India every year in road accidents. Digest that. Has any political party ever pointed fingers on who is more responsible for that and what they will do to reduce this? It is far less challenging to stop this road terror, but it is not quite a vote catcher.

Not that I need to say it, but I am in not quite a BJP supporter and I hate Advani's hand-wringing and Modi's rhetoric on terrorism.

Your viewpoint is interesting but a few pointers on the quoted note. Most of the activities took place prior to 2002 riots under NDA regime, eg IC 814 in 99-2000, Kargil in 1999, Parliament attack in 2001, Srinagar Parliament attack in 2001, Raghunath Temple, Akshardham Temple in 2002. Only event that occurred after 2002 was Mumbai in 2003 and no major incident in 2004 but yet that could not control the number of deaths. So to say Gujarat spiked fanaticism might be wrong here, stats prove it otherwise.

Vikas, I don't really intend to debate the quick theories I proposed outside the context of my post. As said before, I don't have an expertise on the issue. My main argument was that all these claims of who is better on terrorism is petty politics. No one is really better, least of all MMS as the first post article claims.

Some quick thoughts:

Firstly, the Gujarat argument was just one of the hypothesis. It doesn't mean that there were no terrorist activities before that. It also doesn't mean that it is the genesis of all terrorism. India has long suffered from imported terrorism. There is no escaping that. I also mentioned the global trend after 2001 as another theory. These are overlapping factors, we can't say A led to B with any degree of certainty.

Secondly, of the examples you quoted, Raghunath temple and Akshardham happened in 2002, but a few months after Gujarat riots. Kargil doesn't make sense as an example it was a proper war. Neither does IC 814 as it was a hijack with quite a different objective than a hit & run terror attack. So in the examples you quoted, we are only left with Parliament attack before Gujarat riots. We know that was imported terror. There may have been other cases as well. By the way, there was not one bombing in Mumbai, but a spate of bomings over 2002/03 after Gujarat riots.

As I checked the above facts, I found the below link. This will not be an exhaustive list, but still worth checking to jog the memory of what incidents happened under MMS.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_terrorist_incidents_in_India

There is something called "zero" tolerance for terrorism which no political party followed. Five lakhs (number can be debated as "secular" Indian governments including NDA have not even fully acknowledged the tragedy) had been driven out of their homes, now, terrorism is down in Kashmir. Wow!!!

Aakar patel is behaving like terrorism came and/or became reality, in India after BJP came to power. Award should be given to Aakar Patel for this great piece of writing. I demand Padam Shri.

The numbers do seem debatable.

On Gujarat 2002, I definitely believe it spurred terrorist incidents, domestic born or foreign imported. 26/11 can be described as foreign imported but the attackers were repeatedly shown videos of 2002 mobs going on rampage. Even now divisive politicians like Owaisi use Babri and Gujarat to whip up frenzy. This will continue to happen as long as there is no justice or redressal.

Safer place .. should I laugh or feel sorry on this ridiculous article?
Mate, wish you could do little research on the topic before posting this "blog" post and endorsing your fav corrupt congress!

Mate, wake up to the reality!! Stop this muslim appeasement bullshit and stop tagging muslims as 'Minorities'.
Muslims are being treated as privileged citizens in our country thanks to congress's long appeasement policy to draw vote bank. What they haven't got? They got there own Muslim Law, Muslim Universities, subsided haz pilgrimage, freedom to marry more than a woman and produce as much children as they want, their ow religious Madrase, reservation and lot more. But the problem with muslims is they want to islamisation every single thing in this world.

You talk about minorities - the real minorities are Sikh, Christian, Budhists and Parsi .. and they never whine about rights, special privileges, reservation etc.

UNIFORM LAW can only save this country or it gonna be banana republic sooner than later ..

Jit- process the information before putting up the list. Dont say anything for the heck of it, corruption and national security are 2 diff aspects.

It speaks of no. of deaths being reduced, which implies more people are safe. This is in spite of the fact that Naxalism is counted in now, after 2004. If you are willing to prove this data wrong, am willing to give you an ear.

Interesting!!! BTW, what injustice lead to roasting of 59 people alive in a train?

PS: Just wish to know the logic. I am nowhere justifying any violence in return of another violence.

Because they are not big enough of a vote bank for politicians to give much attention

Before getting uniform law we need to have uniform thoughts and treat everyone equal as a society. Until there is divisive politics and people segregating on the basis of religion, no uniformity can be achieved and most of your, and likeminded people's post nowhere suggest we are close to uniformity.

I referred to the same link Kapil. Honestly, I found this list heavily skewed as well. But if that is the criterion, every incident in India can be attributed under the category of imported terror(besides the ones attributed under the tag of 'saffron'). The fact still remains, the number of deaths have still been lowers in last 8 years.

So what explains number 4 ranking in terrorism by a global group that has no affiliation to BJP or Congress?

Also, number of deaths can not the only criteria. Number of incidents and casualties also play a role.

You got to be kidding me.

A uniform civil code may be very desirable (for Muslims), but what has that got to do with terror attacks? How will it save the country? What from?

The way you describe it, you seem to be jealous that a muslim man can marry more than one woman. Otherwise, what explains your belief that this makes muslims privileged? Muslim women (50% of muslims roughly) are also muslims - how are they privileged due to this?
