The terror scare in Jama Masjid has passed as the bombs used in the attack were crude, low intensity and caused little damage. The situation could have been totally different had the casualty numbers been higher or a higher number of dead. The attacks follow a spate of terror strikes in the country. After Delhi, Varanasi, Kashmir and now Jama Masjid brings to light the detriorating internal security. The terror attacks coupled with the rise of Naxalism in the “red corridor” are real causes of concern. Ultimately, in terms of internal security, the buck stops with the Home Minister. Shivraj Patil has enjoyed the trust of Sonia Gandhi and that of the PM (in that order) over the years and was rewarded for his sycophantic skills with the prized post of the Home Minister. Another reason for having Patil as the Home Minister and not a person like Pranab Mukherjee was that Sonia Gandhi and the PM didn't want an alternate power source in the Government. It is no secret that Pranab Mukherjee is the most powerful person in the Cabinet and his elevation as the Home Minister would have seriously undermined the Prime Minister.
So we are stuck with a Home Minister whose performance as has been extremely poor and the his only success has been apparently in his suave sense of dressing! The Prime Minister has gone on recors to say that Naxalism is the biggestthreat to country today. However, he has left it that and has not brought about any credible plan to tackle the problem. What is required is a strong interior minister with experience in the field who can tackle the internal war that is raging inthe country. Also, India has been on the receiving end of terrorism for decades, the NDA regime saw LK Advani acting tough on state sponsored and home grown terrorists. Today, with repeated attacks on the country has left the citizens jittery and wondering they might be next targets in this continuing fight against terror. We require a HomeMinister who can show results and up the ante agianst the terrorists and the Naxals. There is a crying need to also improve our intelligence gathering and intelligence sharing amongst various agencies and state police to help stall terror plots. All these important changes will only come about with a stog Home Minister in charge.
More so it is high time the PM steps in and holds those responsible for maintaining the nations internal security responsible and accountable. And on those counts Mr. Patil deserves to go. It is now for the PM to decide what is more important - sycophancy or national security

If it is a Choice across the Party Lines

If the choice is across the party lines, then most appropriate candidate could be Mr. Jagmohan, formar governor of J&K.

Another option could be some brilliant senior Police or Army Officer of proven resolve and carishma. If Manmohan Singh can prove to be a good finance minister and then a fairly satisfactory PM, then certainly a Senior Army or Police Officer could prove to be a good Home Minister

Army chief running Pakistan does not prove your point Tavathia Sahab. Iron handed approach does not work these days. Most of these incidents are stage managed very often. Present government is doing a fine job under the circumstances.

My Choice...

If the Govt is really interested in 'Security & Safety' of the nation, then it should do the following:

1. Appoint Vishwa Hindu Parishad President & Imam Bhukari as Home Ministers on six monthly rotation basis.

2. Minister of State for Home: President SGPC & the Archbishop.

3. There should be a law passed in parliament banning re-employement of retired officers (who have held a rank equivalant to Brigadier and above) of the Armed Forces, Para Military Forces, IAS/IPS/IFS and other such Govt services to work in any govt dept.

I will go for KPS Gill as home minister though he is not there in govt.

pawar assosiation with the underworld is an open secreat.

Nanavati hospital shoot out and the bombay riots exposed that.

Its is not just home minister, the whole Govt needs a make over.

What Manmohan Singh sorely needs in his cabinet are men of vision, who would unshackle his government from the dangerous I-me-myself politics of ministers like Arjun Singh. There are too many of them now, who are brazenly peddling their own agendas, who could sink this government. There is Arjun Singh, of course, who will stop at nothing to show down the PM, he doggedly believes the primeministership is within reach, there are assorted quota politicians, including Meira Kumar, Jagjivan Ram’s daughter, she wants the Narmada rehabilitation done on a quota basis, there is Saifuddin Soz, who is playing to the Third Front gallery, plus there are the identity politicians of the alliance parties, Sharad Pawar, now, Ram Vilas Paswan, forever one, and so on. How can the PM negotiate them all without some similar thinking cabinet colleagues?

For it is clear, identity politics is turning public opinion against the government. What is being perceived is, without permitting the fruits of our inevitable great growth to be shared naturally, and in normal course, plunder is being planned, to get at the golden goose, as it were. If you divide Manmohan Singh’s government into productive and unproductive ministers, inevitably you will find the unproductive ministers are pursuing personal/ political agendas, and retarding the good efforts of the productive ministers. The point is, identity politics is now subject to the law of diminishing returns, because almost every politician sees it as a ticket to political immortality. While Paswan and Mayawati battle for the hearts and minds of scheduled castes, there are Mandal messiahs all over North India, and one in the cabinet too, Laloo Prasad Yadav, who would fight to keep Arjun Singh out of the OBC turf. Meira Kumar is a very small player in this with a dangerous agenda, and God knows what scores Pawar wants to settle in Bombay pursuing private sector quotas. It should be clear for the PM to see, the government is headed for disaster.
