India PM warns of Sikh militancy
By Sunil Raman
BBC News, Delhi

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh says Sikh separatists based outside India are trying to revive militancy in the state of Punjab.
Mr Singh says there is "credible information" to show that the remnants of separatist groups in Canada, the UK, Germany and Pakistan are regrouping. He said they were doing so with the help of other "hostile forces". Indian security forces battled a bloody uprising by Sikh secessionists in Punjab in the 1980s. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 by her Sikh bodyguards in apparent retaliation for ordering an army attack on the Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest shrine.

'Extremist elements'

Mr Singh, a Sikh himself, expressed concern over "die-hard separatists" in a letter to the head of Sikh temples, Avtar Singh Makkar. "The government and our agencies have credible information of efforts being made by extremist groups to revive militancy in Punjab," his letter stated. Referring to last year's bomb blasts in two cinema halls in Ludhiana, Punjab, Mr Singh said the two people who planned it were "induced" to carry out the attack on a visit to Pakistan with funding from "extremist elements in the US".

There is growing concern in India that former members of extremist groups are indeed regrouping, as Mr Singh fears. Former members of one such group, Babbar Khalsa International, are said to be active in Punjab. Violent protests which broke out last year in the state against the head of a sect, Dera Sachcha Sauda, were said to have been instigated by this group. Indian intelligence agencies believe Babbar Khalsa has the backing of Pakistan's spy agency, the Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) agency. The ISI has long been accused by Delhi of supporting armed separatists in Indian-administered Kashmir and the country's north-east.

Echoing concern over developments in Punjab, National Security Adviser MK Narayan last year warned that there had been "a manifest attempt in Pakistan to build up a radical Sikh environment". Mr Narayanan said there were "signs of resuscitation of militant groups in Canada, the US and Germany".

Punjab, called the granary of India, is economically one of the leading states. The state has been largely peaceful since 1993.

...Punjab Sindh Gujrat Maratha
Dravid Utkal Bang
Vindhay Himachal Yamuna Ganga
Uchchhal Jaldhi Tarang...

I think we have forgotten these lines...somewhere in schools...

Maharashtrians think of themselve seperated from North INDIA...
North East wanna make their own Republic...
Khalistan...we know since long...

Who will save INDIA then...as of Whole UNITED...

Rahul you are right....Indians are suffering from identity crisis these days thats why regionalism is given priority over nationalism..however we should remember that united we stand divided we fall..
lets fight together against this menace of sectarian politics..

Look at the title of this Site

JAT LAND - Online Home for Jats

hahahah..talk about unity. If Indians care soo much about unity, they need to stop putting Indians in categories.

Just look at Shaadi.com. what happen to just finding a girl who is Hindu, educated and got a nice personality??? Who cares if she is Jat or if she is Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Bengali

On the positive note, this separation has turned India into one of the most culturally diversed nation in the world :-) Sooo many languages, food, dresses, rituals etc

“please post ur views first about the topic ....”
It’s no obligation. I am no wise guy but still don’t really appreciate arguments with no rhyme or reason. I do post my views when I think it’s appropriate to share. Please let me only make my decisions. Thanks for your understanding.

and people should share their fate/fortune by reacting.

Healthy discussions are always constructive ..... i always admire your reaction to the sensitive issues....

Ab mujhe bataao kya sahan karna hai :) ... kosjish karta hoon !

These type of NEWS?? What type??

Many times i saw you posting the News ( ofcourse with the original link :) ) ...... what i want to say that almost everybody reads newspaper but yes sometime we ignore some topics/news and it's nice that you bring forward the news to discuss here ..... but in my point of view ( maybe i am wrong here :) ) you should mention what thing forced you to post it here and ur point of view on that ONLY.

Well, i don't think that i am asking something abnormal ...... it's just about initiating the discussion only from the persen himself who bring forward the news/issue/topic to discuss. Please correct me if i am wrong !

Rest is your choice ... buddy :)

Sumit ... i don't know whether you really don't know about Bhindranwala or don't want to comment ?

Bhindranwala was one of the close allies of cotemporary Congress leaders in Punjab. Indira Gandhi appreciated and encourage him just to neutralize the political lead Akali's had in Punjab.

Quite identically how US backed Saddam Hussain during cold war to neutralize Iran and infact USSR in that region and what was the end result .... you know.

Bhinadranwala was a Congress product but later the programm backfired resulting into operation Blue Star. The decision about Operation Blue Star was taken within hours without any preparations as KGB informed Indira Gandhi that you have only hours to save Punjab but not days.

Later things became worse ..... as followers of Bhndranwala were everywhere and were mighty one becoz of the govt support they had in past ...... Punjab remain on fire for so many years.

Interestingly ...... things were settled down when after almost 10 years a Congress Govt. took charge in Punjab under the leadership of Beant Singh. Puraane dost/dushman  Beant Singh was also assassinated ... later.

Now it's again when Congress is not ruling in Punjab and our puppet PM is realesing such a political statement ........ i never expected this from so called Honest Man.
