India Shining to India Whining?

Brother, do not invest in MFs as they have lots of costs associated. I have seen MF very closely.

Rather, go for diversifications in different sectors of securities ( Tech, Banking, Telecom etc) and have a low risk portfolio of your own. There are shares like Info sys, Reliance etc which have always given very good returns even during bad times. And At least you will be saving on the unnecessary fee charged by dumbo and greedy MF managers.

Do not invest everything on a single day - make it a habit and I am sure in long run it will give you very good returns.

Real estate is surely a good option. Again, depends which area you invest in and how fast that will develop.

FD - I dont think so. As per current rates you will get only 7-8 percent annual return for blocking your money. At the current inflation rates - you are actually set to lose money if you compare with value of money factor for next one year.

Thanks Kapil Ji. This is what exactly kept me waiting for some time. I am not able to assure myself that the economic scenario will improve in near future. The Euro-zone crisis, Indian growth rate, political chaos (local and international), all are giving enough signals not to get into the markets now, even MFs.
The fears are actually getting more and more clearer day by day, let's how the future unfolds. At the moment, as you suggested FD and real estate may be good options.

India can still grow by 10 % or more provided reforms are speed up, improve road/rail network and most importantly SUPPLY CHAIN MANGEMENT.

Better SCM wil check inflation and will result in more votes to the govt. Rather than muslim or hindu reservation why not get votes through better SCM and fast track approving various projects caught in red tape and allowing selective FDI. This inflation in india is man made by these drama queens (Politicians) so that their Masters (businessmen) can enjoy. People in our country need to understand Property doesnt always go up so stop spending everything buying property. They come down as well. Look everywhere.

More Reforms > More Growth > Less inflation > More FDI.

Ind. sector dropped by 5.1 %?

Someone said it right you dont have to go to Oxford to know this. This is basic economics. An economy whose basics are not strong will burst like a Ferrari with worn out tyres.

Well, to bring the black money home!! And to propose and bring in choicest FII...Lame, right?....But then it is CONGRESS!!!!

It is sheer hypothesis. The fact of the matter is, currencies cannot be kept hostage by national banks for long where market forces are at play.

:) If Congress can control the value of Rupee like this then, I dont know, they can kill the market and market will kill them.

UPA allies like MOMTA are major irritants in the reform process. Even parties like BJP, which were in favour of 100% FDI in all sectors in 2004, are hell-bent now not to allow the government to take credit of any major reform. Their sole agenda is downfall of the government so that they themselves can introduce all these reforms which are unavoidable and have to take place sooner or later, if the Indian economy is to be saved from Euro-Zone like crisis. In this phase of global recession, even some Euro-Zone countries are going around with begging bowl to solicit FDI. I don't understand, why our opposition is so wary about it. This is vote-bank politics.

More FDI>More employment>better price for farm produce>increase in purchasing price of farmers which constitute a major chunk of population>better infrastructure>increase in growth rate>less inflation>better quality of life>

Selective FDI is the key word. We cant allow uncontrolled FDI in all sectors.

100 ki 100 bhai...abhi picche si ek news aayi thi export data error se related. Overstated exports figures by 9 billion.

Kuch point tai ye rahe:

http://m.economictimes.com/PDAET/articleshow/11051892.cms

Computer and human errors have overstated India's export figures by almost $9 billion, the government said on Friday. This confirms fears about the robustness of the country's export performance and adds to the vulnerability of the rupee.

इब बेरा नहीं यो घोटाला सै या mistake सै.

इसको घोटाला भी कह सकते हैं according to some market analyst, like in the link below:

Bad data? Why $9.4 bn export reporting ‘mistake’ is a scandal

http://www.firstpost.com/economy/is-a-9-4-bn-export-hole-just-an-ordinary-mistake-152717.html

Mr Khullar, this appears to be a transparent effort to gloss over several serious issues that will have widespread ramifications for the believability of Indian economic data. For six reasons at least.

First,
you admit that your ministry’s Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S), is producing “unreliable data”. If this is the case, why didn’t anyone report it before outsiders — including Firstpost and three analysts from Kotak Securities – pointed this out? How long has this unreliable data reporting been happening? Have you set up an enquiry to fix the problem once and for all?

Second
,
if the computer crash at DGCI&S happened at the start of the financial year, how come it took you six months to report the problem to us? Didn’t you put in place elementary checks right then to see that the country’s data – which moves markets and which the whole world relies on – was correct? Why put out data you yourself believe is wrong?

Third,
your attempt to pretend that this is some kind of minor goof-up boggles the mind. The question is not whether the misreporting of export figures damaged our trade balance, but how you failed to spot it. BusinessLine quotes you as saying: “Even if the accounting or statistical system collapses, the RBI (which has a cross-check mechanism) would have raised alarm bells if the reserves are lesser. The fact that there was no dramatic drawdown on the reserves is a good indication that these (export) numbers were not so far off the mark.”

This is one of the most callous statements I have heard from officialdom. Basically, it is a cop-out, since you are effectively saying if we goof up someone else will alert us about it. What does this say about your ministry’s own sense of responsibility on such important figures?

Fourth
,
the real goof-up is not merely $9.4 billion, but much bigger. For example, the figures given out on Friday spoke of a $15 billion over-reporting of engineering exports, and a $12 billion underestimation in the case of petroleum and gems and jewellery. The net figure may be $9.4 billion, but what has really happened is a $27 billion error – since one error in engineering and another in petroleum and gems cannot really cancel each other out.

In short, taking other data entry errors into accounts, we are talking about errors adding up to over $30 billion that went on for months and no one smelt a rat. The Financial Expresssays that “there were exaggerations of up to $0.5-1 billion each in some other product categories and ‘all sorts of things’, including double counting.”
Mr Khullar, you cannot simply allow “all sorts of things” to go on under your watch.

Fifth
,
the problem does not relate only to wrong numbers. In fact, the suspicion raised by the Kotak report was not just about data errors, but whether exports were being deliberately overinvoiced to bring in unaccounted money, now that things are getting hotter for hot money to stay on in tax havens. So, the fact that your wrong numbers “inflated exports by about $9.4 billion, which means a margin of error of about 4-5 percent” is way off the mark. You need to look at the authenticity of even those numbers.

Sixth
,
how do you know that the errors pertain only to this year when the DGCI&S computer and software crashed? The Kotak report that originally raised doubts about your export numbers talked about dubious figures in 2010-11. That’s last year. Not this year.

In selective areas, FDI has already made inroads.

Yes I meant we cannot open all sectors. We have to keep control on a few key sectors. Many countries do.

Opening too many sectors at this stage will not be a good option as it may kill all domestic industry set up and can result in too much foreign control over too many things which we wouldnt want. Not only it will kill domestic industries, it will also increase speculative behaviour by foreign holding groups and you do want your economy to be based on speculative behaviour of such groups.

Anil has made 2 very good points above. All these funds sometimes have excessive costs. Are there any Exchange Traded Funds in India where the cost is very low and transparent? Basically, these indices don't have any active management - so you don't pay for it. But you still get diversification and don't have to do stock picking.

I completely missed the inflation point on FD. With current inflation in India, it is true the deposit won't earn much "real return". But for NRIs, it is still better than the 0% return they get on savings outside India. And I think it still makes sense for short term capital preservation when you don't want to put it in equities. When markets are going down, even the best of stocks would find it hard to dodge the negative sentiment.
