India Shining to India Whining?

Kapil,

Alike China, India is software services and BPO hub and cost of doing business matters a lot. In that case strong rupee can hurt the export services! Last week, Infosys shares shoot up after a weaker rupee news whereas shares of other companies like Reliance plummeted.

Yes, it hurts the IT services companies like Infy. But as a country, India's exports of services are lesser than our imports. RBI is influenced by the export lobby but they have to take into account the imports as well. That's why RBI acts in a much wider ranger of rupee's value when it intervenes.

China's exports of goods are much more than their imports and there is a national consensus (read Communist party diktat) to keep Renminbi depreciated. Renminbi trades in a much tighter range.

The key is whether you have trade surplus or deficit.

Yep, I agree with your point. Imports are more than exports and that matters a lot at the end of the day. What is profitable.

Just to bring out in the attention of fellow jatlanders, rupee is the most undervalued currency in the world. A currency comparison on The Economist reveals some shocking data! The comparison of currency was done back in July last year but became a matter of discussion after being pointed out by Indian Economist in his one of the article. For comparison you can refer to the following link:

http://www.economist.com/blogs/dailychart/2011/07/big-mac-index

According to the statistics on The Economist, The Chinese Yuan is 44 percent undervalued against dollar and Indian rupee is around 61 percent(According to latest figures). Now the question is why the currency is so undervalued even Indian imports are more than exports?

[h=1]BHP's big message: India isn't making it[/h]
http://www.smh.com.au/business/bhps-big-message-india-isnt-making-it-20120518-1yv1h.html

It has been assumed that India's inevitable industrialisation was running a neat 15 or 17 years behind China and then would be turbo-powered by a population that continues to grow strongly, overtaking China soon enough on its way to 1.6 billion in 2050.

The message from BHP this week is that demand for iron ore flattens out as China's growth trajectory moves into the greater consumption phase from a concentration on construction and infrastructure.

Ipso facto, India doesn't take off.

For Australia's selfish medium-term prospects, that is more important than Greece collapsing or the euro being scrapped.

We are still promised another decade of strong commodities production growth with its attendant capex boom, but the reckoning for the lucky country in the way it has invested its boom-time money moves much closer.
For the world's second-biggest nation on its way to becoming the most populous, it's a tragedy of mammoth proportions, condemning most of that massive population to continue living in dire poverty.

Without industrialisation to provide jobs for the existing third of the nation living on a few cents a day, let alone the hundreds of millions more entering the workforce, there's a bleak future that will test the nation's already-stretched social fabric.

Middle class minority
The rise of India's middle class has been based on new industries that have arisen beyond the dead hand of the nation's vast and corrupt bureaucracy.

That middle class is large in numbers by any other country's standards, but it remains a minority in India and the gap between middle class and the majority grows.

Half of Indian homes don't have a toilet, by some reckonings, a third of the nation doesn't even have access to adequate sanitation. And there's no sign of such markers changing while the country remains on its current course.
The idea that India can somehow skip industrialisation and launch straight into a post-industrial economy is fanciful. Adding another half a billion people over the next four decades makes it fantastical.
But right now in Australia, people are much more focused on someone suing her school for failing to get an extremely high mark – perhaps a new peak for the national dedication to entitlement. So we go.

YOU CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO THE INDIAN ECONOMY BY FOLLOWING FEW SIMPLE STEPS:-

I got this article from one of our friends, but it's true. I can see this in day to day life.
Here's a small example:-

Before 12 months 1 US $ = IND Rs 43
After 12 months, now 1 $ = IND Rs 54.5

Do you think US Economy is booming? No, but Indian Economy is Going Down.

Our economy is in your hands....

INDIAN economy is in a crisis. Our country like many other ASIAN countries, is undergoing a severe economic crunch. Many INDIAN industries are closing down. The INDIAN economy is in a crisis and if we do not take proper steps to control those, we will be in a critical situation.

More than 30,000 crore rupees of foreign exchange are being siphoned out of our country on products such as cosmetics, snacks, tea, beverages, etc... which are grown, produced and consumed here.

A cold drink that costs only 70 / 80 paisa to produce, is sold for Rs.9 and a major chunk of profits from these are sent abroad. This is a serious drain on INDIAN economy.

We have nothing against Multinational companies, but to protect our own interests we request everybody to use INDIAN products only at least for the next two years. With the rise in petrol prices, if we do not do this, the Rupee will devalue further and we will end up paying much more for the same products in the near future.

What you can do about it?

1. Buy only products manufactured by WHOLLY INDIAN COMPANIES.
2. ENROLL as many people as possible for this cause.....

Each individual should become a leader for this awareness. This is the only way to save our country from severe economic crisis. You don't need to give-up your lifestyle. You just need to choose an alternate product.

All categories of products are available from WHOLLY INDIAN COMPANIES.

Farewell to Incredible India

IN A world economy as troubled as today’s, news that India’s growth rate has fallen to 5.3% may not seem important. But the rate is the lowest in seven years, and the sputtering of India’s economic miracle carries social costs that could surpass the pain in the euro zone. The near double-digit pace of growth that India enjoyed in 2004-08, if sustained, promised to lift hundreds of millions of Indians out of poverty—and quickly. Jobs would be created for all the young people who will reach working age in the coming decades, one of the biggest, and potentially scariest, demographic bulges the world has seen.
But now, after a slump in the currency, a drying up of private investment and those GDP figures, the miracle feels like a mirage. Whether India can return to a path of high growth depends on its politicians—and, in the end, its voters. The omens, frankly, are not good.

In office but not in power

Some of this crunch reflects the rest of the world’s woes. The Congress-led coalition government, with Brezhnev-grade complacency, insists things will bounce back. But India’s slowdown is due mainly to problems at home and has been looming for a while. The state is borrowing too much, crowding out private firms and keeping inflation high. It has not passed a big reform for years. Graft, confusion and red tape have infuriated domestic businesses and harmed investment. A high-handed view of foreign investors has made a big current-account deficit harder to finance, and the rupee has plunged.

The remedies, agreed on not just by foreign investors and liberal newspapers but also by Manmohan Singh’s government, are blindingly obvious. A combined budget deficit of nearly a tenth of GDP must be tamed, particularly by cutting wasteful fuel subsidies. India must reform tax and foreign-investment rules. It must speed up big industrial and infrastructure projects. It must confront corruption. None of these tasks is insurmountable. Most are supposedly government policy.

Why, then, does Mr Singh not act? Vacillation plays a role. But so do two deeper political problems. First, the state machine has still not been modernised. It is neither capable of overcoming red tape and vested interests nor keen to relax its grip over the bits of the economy it still controls. The things that do work in India—a corruption-busting supreme court, the leading IT firms, a scheme to give electronic identities to all—are often independent of, or bypass, the decrepit state.

Second, as the bureaucracy has degenerated, politics has fragmented. The two big parties, the ruling Congress and the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), are losing support to regional ones. For all the talk of aspirations, voters do not seem to connect reform with progress. India’s liberalisers over the past two decades, including Mr Singh himself, have reformed by stealth. That now looks like a liability. No popular consensus exists in favour of change or tough decisions.

As a result, when the government tries to clear bottlenecks, feuding and overlapping bureaucracies can get in the way. When it suggests raising fuel prices, it faces protests and backs down. When it tries to pass reforms on foreign investment, its populist coalition partners threaten to pull the plug. It does not help that the ageing Mr Singh has little clout of his own: he reports to the ailing Sonia Gandhi, the dynastic chief of Congress. With a packed electoral timetable before general elections in 2014, Congress does not want to take risks.
Is it time for a change at the top? Mr Singh has plainly run out of steam, but there are no appealing candidates to replace him. Mrs Gandhi’s son, Rahul, has been a disappointment. What about a change of government? The opposition BJP is split and has been wildly inconsistent about reform. Its best administrator, Narendra Modi, chief minister of Gujarat, is divisive and authoritarian. If it formed a government tomorrow, the BJP would also have to rely on fickle smaller parties.

Some reformers pray for a financial crisis that will shake the politicians from their stupor, as happened in 1991, allowing Mr Singh to sneak through his changes. Though India’s banks face bad debts, its cloistered financial system, high foreign-exchange reserves and capable central bank mean it is not about to keel over. A short, sharp shock would indeed be useful, but a full-blown crisis should not be wished for, because of the harm that it would do to the poor.

Instead the dreary conclusion is that India’s feeble politics are now ushering in several years of feebler economic growth. Indeed, the politicians’ most complacent belief is that voters will just put up with lower growth—because they supposedly care only about state handouts, the next meal, cricket and religion. But as Indians discover that slower growth means fewer jobs and more poverty, they will become angry. Perhaps that might be no bad thing, if it makes them vote for change.

This is the most ridiculous logic ever. I am surprised even after so many years of globalization, people still post such stuff and other applaud them. Here's a quick rebuttal -

1. In today's world no company belongs to one country. Coca cola and Pepsi also employ thousands of Indians. So in a way they share their profits with Indians and also pay taxes. Their products facilitate the livelihoods of lakhs of shopkeepers and millions of us quench our thirsts via their products.

2. Secondly, who says Indian companies are do gooders? Buying a bajaj scooter wouldnt mean that the country would develop. Would Rahul Bajaj ex-CEO share the profits with all Indians and not keep it for himself? Every company, be it local or foreign is the same. It is extremely foolish to say we can be patriotic by only buying Indian products. This is failed logic.

And whats best? The person who wrote this probably did so via a Dell, Lenovo, HP laptop. A foreign product. :)

The issues raised in the article require immediate attention at the level of concerned authorities.

I think these issues have been raised from time to time but unfortunately the dyanimcs of Indian politics does not allow a broad consensus on policies and reforms.

In a coalition government, you do not have full freedom of making decisions.

On top of that, cautious top bureaucrats, red tape are other factors halting the major reforms.

In the coming general elections(2014), I do not think any party would have a majority. Regional parties have emerged very strongly in recent assembly elections(UP,Panjab).

So in that case, our country will have another coalition government, much fragmented than previous one.

So for an incumbent government, it would be more harder to go ahead with reforms. Lets see what happens in next elections and afterwards.

India is growing less hospitable to foreign investors

Excerpt from the article:

Some investments have been hurt by the state. POSCO, a South Korean firm, has spent years tangled in red tape as it seeks to build a $12 billion steel plant. Cairn India, an oil firm bought by Vedanta, a London-listed resources firm, was hit by a multi-billion-dollar royalties grab that it says breaks a government promise. Several mobile-telecoms firms that used licences awarded in 2008 through a process the supreme court has judged illegal may now lose billions.

Unexpected and bold move by RBI today. Didn't change repo or CRR at all, giving government a signal to make policy amendments(?) to sustain growth opportunities. Already rumours are doing rounds that Virappa Moiley has started inside campaign to put pressure on govt to quash the tax policy amendments which includes taxing of old deals (read Vodafone) (creating insecurity among companies regarding investment opportunities in India).

We could see some movements on FDI now (more so because of sidelining of Mamta Banerjee if she doesnt support Pranab).

Ex- Finance Minister Mr. Yashwant Sinha had pertinently asked this question in the parliament a few months back. Why is Rupee tumbling when there is no obvious FII (Foreign Institutional Investor) exodus? And that seemed to be very pertinent question in light of absence of any obvious or logical reason for the rupee devaluation. Is it actually because of the demand and supply or is it because of the manipulation by the thugs sitting in seats of power.

The losing sheen of the rupee against the dollar would no doubt benefit the exporters, but what about the imports, notably of petroleum products, 80% of which are imported? The only logical reason that I can understand for the downfall of the rupee vis-a-vis the dollar is the windfall or gain that the influential people will have in converting their black money in dollars outside in rupee at the time of bringing it back into the country or the hawala transactions which are very very much prevalent and are almost a parallel economy running in terms of the quantum of foreign trade and transactions.

And who would control or check it when those responsible for controlling also own that black money and stand to gain out of this falling rupee???

Atish ye hame kuch dene nahi aa rahi hamse lene aa rahi hain ye sab apna gobar yahan leep ke chale jate hain hame kaunsa fayda hai?

is desh ke fayde ke liye is desh walo ko hi kuch karna padega

Jo ye kehte hain this is not a good time to Invest in India unke liye

When market is down then it is best time to invest because no country will allow its markets to remain down. There will be heavy economic reforms which will give long term benefits. Today one dollar is giving you 57 rupees what else do you need.

This is tragedy that when times are bad maximum people think to take their money out but actually this time is to put more money in. India is not in a situation where there can be no reforms or situation will remain same. This is golden period for India exports are becoming cheaper making it stand below China in costs foreign companies are now looking for investment in India or planning to Import goods from India. Many companies are getting orders from foreign companies. The markets where there was scarcity of orders just one year ago is now sealing deals.

Vodafone retroactive tax is a nice move from our side and i appreciate it Vodafone is not paying even a single penny in Britain because laws are lax. It was deal between two foreign companies and deal was sealed in a tax heaven but still the deal was about business in India. We have enough telecom operators if Vodafone wants to pull out then i will be happy.
Walmart had already ruined retail markets of many countries and protests against it are going on everywhere. Walmart is largest consumer of Unilever, Procter and Gamble, General Electric making it in a better position to negotiate and its negotiations burden is passed on to other retailers making it to take more advantages of situation. I am not anti globalization but i am strongly in favor of empowerment of domestic industries.

2G scam was really a disaster on our part but atleast it is exposed same happened everywhere if we see in rescission of US one company was there for which US allowed Lehman Empire to fall. please watch Inside job.

And last thing India is MARKET for the world and they will have to come here to sell their goods

No country in the world is having Population of 120 crore with more then 65% below 30 years of age
Where middle class earning more then $ 1500 is more then population of many countries

and they are hungry for quality goods and their purchasing power is more then most of European and American middle class.

Dear friends we were under foreign rule for years and they came as traders and we have learnt a lesson from that incident and our economy remain closed for foreigners for 44 good years but we found that we have to depend on imports for petroleum and we need to pay in dollars for that. There was no other way except opening economy. South Korea is the nation i salute for their development but at the same time we should not forget that ours is second largest population in world.
All i want to say that those who have resources must invest in manufacturing or services and give a strong competition to foreign companies. We again need a SWADESHI movement like Rajpal ji suggested. But that won't be sufficient Coke and Pepsi companies are using negative advertisements and we start sharing
