MELBOURNE: Close on the heels of the brutal stabbing of an Indian student working as part-time cabbie, Indian taxi drivers here have claimed that they were frequently assaulted and cheated but they did not report the incidents because they had no confidence in the police.

Gul Dhillon, 22, from Melbourne's north-west said he believed the attacks on the city's cabbies were racially motivated.

"They think, 'he is from another country and they can do whatever they want'. Police do nothing," Dhillon said.

Most of the cabbies in Australia's Victoria state are young men from India studying at university and driving taxis on a Friday and Saturday night to earn a living, the Melbourne Leader said.

The taxi drivers came out in protest demanding more security after 23-year-old Jalvinder Singh was stabbed and left to bleed on the roadside on Apr 29 allegdly by a passenger who claimed he was under medication and had no memory of the incident.

Sony Malhotre, 29, who has been driving cabs for over two years, says he had been set upon three times by passengers but stopped contacting the police after the first incident in North Melbourne.

"Police showed up after one hour," he was quoted as saying by the Leader. "I went home and didn't work for a week.

"I don't do night shift any more. It's not worth the risk, I have a child," Malhotre said.

J. Singh, 23, said he had been involved in numerous such incidents in the past year but never reported them to police because he felt "they don't care".

"I've had rocks thrown at me and people running away without paying their fees," Singh was quoted as saying by the Leader.

He said it "was typical for police to show late". John Collins, a driver of 15 years from Caulfield, also believed the attacks on cab drivers were racially motivated.

"I was never involved in any serious incidents. I'm a white guy you see, that way I'm in a privileged position," Collins said.

Melbourne East Insp Paul Pottage, the police negotiator at the protest, said an education campaign for taxi drivers focusing on dealing with violent passengers would include a component on improving their confidence in police

"Certainly, a percentage of problems that some of the drivers have is interaction with the police," he said.

"A lot of it is perception but there are probably instances where both sides can improve."

Pottage said a lot of the issues arose because taxi drivers wanted to continue working instead of taking time out to make a police report.

Victorian Taxi Directorate general manager Peter Corcoran said drivers were encouraged to report all instances of crime to the police

Stop driving Cabs if u can't handle the situation! These people who claims all these things they even cant speak english! So why u are complaining abt the system and system for cabs is same all over the world!
Don't complain dudes just face it and face white faces and stand for ur rights!

Isnt is also because they are not in a situation to complaint, because:

 • Some of them are living illegaly
 • Some of them are working more than work permit allows them?

quite right

They dont even know the popular landmarks and destinations...
service is poor and dodgy!
moreover, this attack was NOT at all racial, it was just that the other guy was mentall unstable as he was under AIDS medication! it was just this Indians hard luck that it turned out to b him!

when it comes to the job in which 'u deal with people' , u need confidence more than anything else. non-verbal communication is '70 percent' of the communication.
body language, tone, grooming etc. forms a big part of ur personality

most of the indian cabbies (or any industry) need to buy a 'deodrant' before they step outside ur house. atleast dont smell like 'sadi hui daal fry'

all they need is 'self esteem and confidence'

they live like rats.

this is totally agreed .......... and i think this is the whole thing and regarding finding places when u have path finder why to remember the name of places and it is the duty of the traveller to know his address where he is going and not the driver .....

and regarding working illegally and not be able to report ..if u do the reporting then .... i think no body bothers u on what visa status u r ... they r the ppl who will help u out in finding the culprit and not checking visa status ...

.....

..... is it so ... i do doubt ... these r the countries where every job is respected ......... here the drivers are earning like good money they r being respected and reagarding the deo thing it depends on the grooming of the person .. if he is doing so he will contnue that way ......

Gagan Bhai Your generalization of all or majority of Indian cabbies is very poor. We Indians have generally very good bathing habits and one doesn't need the deodorant all the time. " jo log, khaskar Gore deodrant ka raag alpaate rahte hein, sheldom take bath" aur naa saale pachha dhote, what you say about them.
They need all that Deo-crap.
They would always complain about us, smelling of curry. When you eat same curry in front of them, they would exclaim, " what a nice smell! what is the recipe"

I mean, we are the biggest racist and keep making cases against our own people. Our young people are far better than the local young generation. I say this, because their contribution to the local economy is greater than their own young generation. I don't blame you or any one supporting your view. It is the sense of security. My own son call them nerd, workaholic and what not, because he didn't have to work hard like them.

Is the foul smell from the driver or their poor personalty invites this kind of attack. In fact most of the time the passenger who misbehaves is the one who themselves smell like **** or rotten meat. They do it when, either they are drunk or under the influence of drugs.

Status of an immigrant plays an important role for developing one's personality.
Students, who come with the intention of settling down, would have to restrain themselves from certain situations. A minor conviction can ruin the hard work of years. They all come from different backgrounds, and lots of expectations from parents and Dependants. I believe, you all remember the incident when some young drunk kids insulted one young taxi driver, a student from. One of them spet on him. He ran over that ideot who challanged his self esteem. But, the question is, was it worth. the poor boy is languishing in jail. So, to make a career, to make your and families dream realize, one needs lots of patient, have to learn to contain your anger.

Anyways, these are the stray incident and happen everywhere, in Bombay, in Delhi or Rohtak.

Deshwal ji, you have done an excellent analysis. I agree with you, our people should stop atleast criticising ourselves when we are out of our country and exist in minority there.

i m not talkin bot the kind of money they make or how much respect people have for cabbies (but stil i shud tell u..not much)

I have travelled in every part of Australia, worked in different industries in variety of positions, known every kind of people , from every walk of life,
dealt with people, lived in different situations in different places.....bla bla bla

when i say something its not to critisize or anything , i m just telling about particular class of people which gives a bad name to the whole community (only way u can fix them up is by lettin them know, jhooti badai me kuch nahi rakha),,,i tell wat i m sure about

i dont know how long u been here (is it 1 yr?) and how much u have travelled , how many ppl u have met....???? and many more things

You are right Chhote bhai! I moved in Melbourne in August last year and that is less than a year. I also agree when you say that you know a lot more about Australia and Australian society. In fact, I hardly know anything and i don't dispute on that. It is just a difference of opinion. If we don't differ than why is the discussion for? I didn't want you to look as a community basher. It was just a different point of view.

I hold those views, may be I struggled more in life than an average person. I relate my self to those "sadi hui Daal fry " type easily, because I have seen more financial hardship than you. I believe, my background influences me to symphathise with those strugglers, to be precise the immigrants, who are from not so sound financial background. They have to share accommodation with alikes and probably live in not so healthy conditions.

I can also feel for your apathy towards them for not changing themselves according to the Australian society or any new society. There are many things that needs to be changed by us in this foreign land but they are so deep rooted in side us, thus make the transition difficult. I believe, the next generation would have a different attitude towards everything. Till then, try to bear and be sympathetic to the old fashioned, like me.

Cheers!

I think one year is enough to understand the society you live in. If you think that you lived for a long time and know better about the people then my friend you are under wrong impression. I have seen the people who are living in these countries for 10 years and more they criticise their own people more than others.

In fact, I lived in New Zealand for 7 years before moving to Melbourne. Things are not so different over there. Moreover, I was in constant touch with friends in Australia. I knew at least 20 families personally, and interacted with them on a regular basis. In fact i had even communicated with Bhai Gagan on a couple of occasions after I came to know about him on jatland. I am an extrovert person and interact and mix with people easily, so have many more friends after coming here. Therefor i can claim to have gained a fairly good knowledge about life in Melbourne in General but don't claim to be an authority.

Anyways, Yoginder bhai, we were also talking about "Self Confidence" and "Self esteem", it is so natural for newly migrated person that they would lack in these traits. Although natural, but these traits also would have environmental and situational bearing. A person who lacks in these traits, even temporarily, would be struggling even making an effort.

I can relate a very good example to this situation. I was listening this Raagni
about Sudaama and Krishan. Sudam was languishing in poverty, his wife advises him to go to his childhood friend Krishana

Bit harsh comments u might be right upto some extent but there are few things where Mr. Deswal is also right! Nyway it all depends on ones perception!

Deswal bhaisaab ! I have old fashioned values too and i m the biggest supporter of tradition and culture but i criticise bad habits.

all i m trying to suggest here is 'our people should look after themselves' , just dont give up good lifestyle, interests, hobbies and on top of that life a life full of fear and insecurity just because u believe u r on foreign land or something..if u r here and want to live here this is ur land..this is ur country..otherwise get out of here nd live in the country which u think is urs.
