Indian Higher Education Institutes in Global Perspective

Some off the cuff suggestions:

1. Revitalize the curriculum and make it EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, learn through experiencing it e..g to write an essay on ZOO, take the students to ZOO and then ask them to take notes there instead of "MBD guide se rutta maaro"

2. make the curriculum good mix of FUNDAMENTAL STUDIES and APPLIED STUDIES. Not just rote learning, study and understand the fundamentals, and then apply them to the real life solutions through field trips, etc. School books must entail those real-life problem solving questions that help students apply the fundamentals they learnt to the real life.

3. Indian curriculum is theory based and does not give life skills, include more LIFE SKILLS e.g. soft skills, and all rounded skills and so on.

4. Make education more VOCATIONAL ... gain vocational education first (e.g. ITI... but new type of ITI with better and relevant curriculum), those who wish to go for higher education (e.g. bachelors degree) must first complete vocational training (e.g. ITI or industry training e.g. accounting, etc) and then progress to a university degree/

5. Introduce more Industry-education linkages in the curriculum (change the curriculum based on what the industry needs in 3 areas: global, national and local... all 3 areas are important, first 2 central govt can design and 3rd one state govt can decide), in imparting courses (course credit for the vocational work undertaken).

6. Make the curriculum CONTEXT SPECIFIC e.g. We study history while being ignorant of the indus valley site in own village "bus us ne kurdi samjh ke us pe kuda phenke ja s log". We take lots of pride in SHALLOW THINGS (casteism) while we are taught naught or little about our own local heritage (self-test for the reader: how many of us know about nearest indus valley site closest to your village or a wild life sanctuary. PS: each district in haryana has at least one of those sanctuaries.)

7. Teachers must be tested every 3 yrs on the subjects they teach (Currency of their knowledge and skills, ongoing professional development), significant proportion of their salary must be linked with their performance (teaching outcome based compensation to improve the quality of teaching),

8. Give the control of each school to the local community through local trust e.g. convert each govt school to a semi-govt trust run by the villagers, they then can monitor hiring, firing, quality of teachers, that way sure villagers wont tolerant absentism and shoddy teaching from the kaamchor govt teachers, shortfall of govt-funded teachers can be met with contract teachers hired by the villagers through the semi-govt trust (rust partially funded by the govt budget).
