Corruption is inevitable

There is a vast difference between the corruption in USA and in India. I believe that no country on the face of earth is there with 0% corruption but it is the degree of infestation that makes the difference. There is corruption here (US) but it is not prevalent to the level that it becomes a pain for normal people in daily activities or it becomes a hinderence in dealing with govt organizations. On the contrary hardly any work gets done in India without bribery. I had problems getting my license, passport, new telephone connection on time, to transport my mike through railways etc. in India and I used the evil to get my house map passed, get away from speeding tickets, get an extra gas cylinder, get imported stuff through customs etc. So the difference in the amount of infestatation and level of corruption is huge. It is not at all a pain and such people are get caught sooner or later..

My personal impression has been that in the west its increasing and coming down to lower levels now where as in India its decreasing. Examples of corruption in India you have given are the one which were there about 15-20 years back.

Corruption in the US is at a very high level and hard to trace.

I will give you one example. Excuse me if I say something which may not be as it is because I am recalling this from the top of my head.

Senator Barbara Boxer of (D-California) is on the Senate Defense Appropriations Committee where she is responsible for approving Defense purchases. She was approving projects that directly benefited her husband's firm in the tune of tens of millions of dollars.

There was a big storm in the media for a few days and then one day it just died out. Probably every one from the top to the bottom was on the gravy train and no one in the Federal Government had their hands clean enough to go after Senator Boxer.

There was a similar incident involving Congressman John Murtha (D-Pennsylvania). I dont remember the exact details.

Over the past few years there have been numerous incidents involving members of both the parties. The most famous of all was Vice-President Dick Cheney's former employer Haliburton which is now known as Kellog Brown & Root that made billions of dollars off the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. All this time, Mr. Cheney was a stockholder in the company.

Politicians in the US may not openly accept bags full of cash like they do in India. They just make their family and friends richer while they are in power.

Its not a surprise to me how average members of congressmen become millionaires in just a few years even though their after-tax salaries are around a 100,000 dollars/year.

So, in conclusion, yes corruption does exist in the US but at a very high level.

Sir, with all due respect I am just wondering in which part of India do you reside if you have an impression that the acts which I mentioned are part of history now. Hardly anyone can get a passport without paying the bribe to get a vigilance clearance, if you fail to tip (bribe) the lineman on a new connection line then your phoneline would not be working beyond 2 days, you can get a driver's license just by sitting at home and no driving test is required and I can elucidate on every other corruption problem that affect the daily life in India. If we are to address the issue then we need to first accept the existence of such evils.

I am not sure about the increase in corruption in western countries as I am totally unaware of past trends. I can only say that certainly systems over here is not as perfect as I had an impression before coming here but again it is not a norm here.

Then what choice do i have? not to get a passport, not to get a driver's license, not to have a working telephone line, or to let custom people confiscate my legal luggage. such things I had to do for not getting the illegal things done but for the right things and that is the sad part.

Nevertheless I totally agree with your allegations, but then my intention was never to promote corruption. It was not a choice by selection.

Iss mod ko apne marji ka karna hae.

I have my 4th Passport, 4th Driving license, four electricity connections, telephone connections in old MTNL era and what not and I was never anybody. I got them all by standing in Que and without paying a penny to anyone. Problem comes when someone is trying to break the Que and wants things done out of turn , out of way and in shortest possible time. Let us blame ourselves also if we can not get our genuine work done without greasing some one's palms. On my first trip back to India a police guy demanded the bottle of liquor I was carrying. I put my foot down and told him to do what ever he wants. I was just a student that time. Guy did not have guts to go any further and apologised to me for his conduct.

The point I am driving at is the existence of corruption not about who pays and not who doesn't. The moment I try to pay for such things in here, I would be in.

corruption upar se tho jadu see nahee aaye. Saaar paise ka mamla hae. Indian garib desh hae amerika ke mukablee corruption hae. Amerika mein bhi corruption hae. Agar nahee hae tho yeh saara recession amerikan business financial people se kaise aaya?:tamatar

I understand the point. Again i was only trying to tell the difference in the level of corruption between india and america.

But I would like to tell you irrespective of the scope of this topic that I wanted my passport to sit for MBA and to come here. If I would not have paid the police verification officer, my passport would have been delayed and only I would have been screwed not any one else.

Transport authority was 10 miles from my home and I had to rely on someone to reach there for driving test. Of course I cleared the test but then the officer said that because i ddnt not give hand signal along with indicator during day time so i failed the test. Of course his motive was to only fail me on stupid reasons. I complained about it and said that it is not required once I gave the indicator but then it would only delayed the matter if i would have waited for their reaction to my application. And I cant manage to get
someone every time to go 10 miles to transport authority.

there are similar stories for every case. Things are easier said than done.

Time is Money sir. Give time or money it depends on individuals' choice but we have to pay there is no escape.

It's not easy to get the things done for poor person to do the things in our country. In 2007 I have spend a week spending 2 hrs daily to get the birth certificate of my child. Since I was against bribing them so I used different tactics to get the things done (Phone call from senior official) and all that happened in one of fast developing cities in India (Noida).

The questions is just to get the Birth Certificate Do I need to pay a bribe or should I ask some senior official to help me. this is just a basic thing and it hurts common people.

But for the same things you don't have to worry about they will done same day spending very less time and without any disturbance.

US is a capitalist country. People donot deal with any government agency except for getting things like Driver's License, passport, jail, courts, etc. The rules are clearly defined for all these agencies, the processes for getting your job done are quite simple, you donot have to be an expert in anything. You can just walk in, fill out a form, pay a minimal fee, produce the documents etc and get your stuff done.

In India, you want to get something done ... you have to be an expert on that department ... you have to understand their stupid and useless procedures. Deal with rude and corrupt sarkari employees. If you know somebody in that department ... rishtedaar ke friend ka friend ... then you have to kiss their a$$ to get them to make a phonecall. Be prepared for unexplained delays etc etc. By the end of the whole ordeal you come out bloodied and bruised with no self respect left.

For those who are saying, that you would never bribe anybody - more power to you ... but you should realize that alll the nonsense you go through because you did not bribe ... is unwarranted and unneccessary ..... It is not a badge of honor.

Asking senior official/pay the bribe - kinda same thing.
