Aadarniya Ravinder bhaisahab!

Charan sparsh. Kshama praarthi hun kintu aapki uparokt baatein mujhey kinchit kinkartavayavimudh kar rahi hain. Aapne likha, ''...many of our reformists(Swami Dayand & a few more) have fought against this bad practice to get the things in order.''

Mainey aapka dhyan aakrasht karaya ke ye bat galat hai. Swami Dayanad ne apni pustak mein kam aayu ki yuvti ka zyada aayu ke yuvak ke saath vivah ki sanstuti ki hai. Ye mere/aapke nahi Swamiji ke vichar the. Isi karanvash mainey likha ki aapki baat tahthya-sangat nahi hai. Mainey ye nahi likha ke aapki baat tark-sangat nahi hai.

Phir bhi chaliye ho sakta hain main galat raha hun. Kshama baden ko chaiye chhoton ko apraadh.

The Real Issue:

I saw this movie, and really liked the acting of the young girl. It requires a lot of talent to act the way she did against a veteran of so many film and a living legend like Amitabh Bachhan.

The issue raised by Mr. Deswal was two fold: Firstly, should Amitabh accept such roles? Secondly, is the film bad for society? Let us analyze them one at a time.

First Issue: Should Amitabh accept such roles:

I think, Amitabh is an actor and should accept any role. He is famous, that does not mean he is God, as many people project him. I remember, people across the country celebrating his birthday. It is pure business, and to me, Amitabh is an actor. Now the performance, I think the role played by Amitabh was pretty simple one. Any good actor would have done justice to the role fairly equally, if not exactly like Amitabh did. The best effort came from the young girl who played the role of Jia.

Second: Is it Good for the Society:

I think, there is nothing wrong with the story or the subject matter. There have been cases, where the older people did get involved with younger people, may not be the same age difference. In the Western culture, we do see this big age difference in some cases (this may be for the want of money though) The issue here was, that by getting involved with her, he lost every thing that he had before getting involved with young lady. Probably that is the lesson we need to learn from the movie. Why should we feel that movie propogates such relationships, why can't we think that movie propogates against such relationships. Here is the issue of perception. I think this movie is any day better than those movies showing nearly nacked women, and tonnes of violence.

From the business point of view, Ram Gopal Verma made a good film at low budget. May be Amitabh's cost itself could be equal to the rest of expenditure that he might have incurred. I would say it did make a good viewing to pass time.

About the movie

What a dark movie!

Complete murder of the theme and the emotions attached.

Leaves one with such a hollow uneasiness, hollow silence and kind of leaves one with something “negative and dark”.

The only positive part of the movie is its so true to its name, leaves you Nishabd in the end…wait…but ….only because of the disappointment you are left with…

As I said before, I found Jogggers Park (based on a similar theme, or for that matter even Stanley Kubrick's Lolita) way better than this, what a true and sweet depiction of emotions with some kind of take home message as well.

With reams written over the movie here, I wonder whether it should've been named Nishabd.

:)

Incomplete murder was “Eyes wide shut” ..so atypical Kubrik movie..

Poonam Ji,

How would you have liked this particular subject to be tackled? Or how you would have liked this movie to be made? Any suggestions?

Poonam Ji,

Sure!

Before I write anything let me make it very clear that I’m not against any kind of relationship involving whatever kind of differences in age, race cast or creed.

Human mind is very intricate. Don’t tell me thoughts “which are not supposed to” cross your mind don’t cross your mind. I’m not gonna buy it, so a guy of 60 falling for a girl of 18 ….absolutely natural. So where is the trouble. Trouble comes when it comes to making a choice between “to rein or to execute” your instincts/thoughts and failing to maintain that delicate fine balance in physical life.

Having said that, coming to the movie, multiple flaws:

1. As long as Vijay was attracted to Jia or anybody else, is okay and natural (until unless its another man!!). But some wisdom is expected of a man having experience of life for that much number of years as to how to rein oneself and try some sensible discretion, at the first place. But he did not. I’m still okay with this part.

2. The justification presented in the movie for this “odd” involvement was that the old man felt like going back in time, felt younger. Is this a reason enough (or only reason) to fall in love (if at all it was) as he confessed to her later in the movie….very very hard to believe? How silly! I bet he would have felt equally young had he started playing tennis with her daughter. The justification was just farce and not required actually. And the way, if I recall correctly, he confessed his love to her itself was so dicey.
I’m not okay with this part: his confession of love (which apparently he was not sure himself) to a much younger impulsive immature girl and taking a decision at the cost of his family.

3. Realizing the pain of the family and going back to them and receive rejection. You think this will be a lesson and people will rein themselves from the “odd” involvements, I’m sorry to say the answer would be NO. Rather I feel sorry for the guy that even his close ones could not understand him when he came back to them and dejected him. I’m just not okay with this part. The end of the movie was indeed depressing. You love someone inspite of anything then how his wife (assuming she loved, even if she didn’t, after spending so many years with him you do develop a strong attachment and bonding) could just leave him to die (he tries committing suicide)when he wanted to come back to her.

Well, I can go on and on, but lemme stop here.

In nutshell, as you asked, I would have liked this movie to be made something like “Age of Innocence” by Martin Scorsese….I would have wished to see Amitabh something like Ellen Olenska (as mature and sensible) and Revathi as May Welland (as accommodating for your loved one) in the movie. Anyway, may I suggest you to watch this movie , I’m sure you are going to like it.

And yeah, my all time favorite "Joggers Park", do watch this one too.

Thanks

Dear Poonam Ji,

Thanks a lot for sparing some time to give your views, I really appreciate it. As I understood, you wanted a happy ending. Nothing wrong with it. I did not find any thing depressing with the current ending. My reasons are as under:
1. Vijay trying to commit suicide. Quite possible in the situation and the weak (I call him a weak character, as you have also metioned, about a man of his age exercising discretion) character played by Vijay. Nothing un-natural with that.
2. His wife: Even though they had spent 27 years of happily married life, some times it is hard to swallow the breach of trust. Some people are forgiving and some are not. It was the development of the character and to me that is perfectly OK.

Thus, to me the ending could be a lesson for people of any age to consider the trade offs while getting involved in some activities which are against the accepted social norms.

Playing tennis requires a physical activity, that may not be possible for all 60 years oldies. It was an emotional activities and the director was able to show the struggle through which Vijay was going through while considering his options to accept or not to accept it.
Remember a dialogue, by his daughter: when Jia spent some time with Vijay for the first time, the daughter said that he is a bore person. To Jia he was different and thus probably exciting.

As I have said earlier: Purely from the business point of view, Ramgopal Verma should have made a decent money on this movie only if fee of Amitabh was reasonable. I guess, many other actors would have played Vijay's character equally well. One of them could have been Nasiruddin Shah.

Well, thank you for discussing this....:)

Not exactly happy ending. What I could not digest was the character being shown so weak and his inability to draw a line and his inability to make a right decision.

In terms of acting, all of 'em were good. Its just the concept of the movie or may be just me ...:)

Anyway, if you can get hold of the movies I recommended you will know where I’m coming from

I was also speechless at d end of d movie cos it felt so incomplete....and it was hard to guess wat amitabh bachan had realised at d end.And I think wanting to go in the past to feel younger is one thing and getting infatuated to a young lady is another. This is no reason to feel like in love....weird though but the movie was a gud time pass.Jiah Khan's acting was marvellous!

Kid bro (atleast this part is not debatable any more),

No point in dragging the issue further. You claimed that Swami Dayand fought against this kind of mismatches. I aruged that he did not and referred to the book and cited an example in support of my argument. I wanted to say that atleast Dayanad, as the facts suggest, might not have been involved in fighting against this (what you may be tempted to call) evil.

Another technical error, albeit inadvertent I m sure, that you've made and I quote:
jab koi bahut kam aayu ki yuvti(14 se 16,17 varsh) ka bahut jyada aayu ke vyakti(lagbhag 60 varsh) ke vayakti ke saath vivah kiya jaat tha.

Got it? No? Read again.

Ok I tell you. Although the age of puberty is coming down still we call a 14-year-old girl or for that matter 16-year-old, not a yuvti but a kishori.

Dear Poonam Ji,

I have seen Jogger's Park and really liked the movie. To be honest, I would rate Jogger's Park a better entertainment than Nishabd. I have not seen Lolita though, but would certainly see that now that you have recommended.

My point of discussion is that it is just a character that has been depicted as a weak character and to that the actor did a justice to his role. We do have such characters in real life too. To me it made a good time pass and much better than the movies having a lot of un-necessary violence and nudity.

Saw the movie.

One needs to be a real stud to hook up at 60. I wish I retain my testosterone levels when I hit 60.

its gud 2 c tht people still fight on nthing...
y nt v produce amitabh n give him sm panchayati rule......
leave it fallas......... bit too easy 4 ur complex mind........
