Is the Delhi Metro a costly mistake?

Ahh precious, yah we should not make trade centre because some whackoes are going to bang plane into it and we should not have metro because we have to spend for security too!

Passengers using the Metro make up just about a fifth of the numbers projected initially. There is also the sobering experience of the 16 km Kolkata Metro , where ridership is limited to 10 per cent of capacity.

Kolkata metro runs at its full capacity i have first hand experience. There is hardly space for standing!

There may be some region in kolkata where people dont use metro but there are good reasons for that.

Most of uneducated and old people fear metro because it seems quite cumbersome to them. Everything mechanised and so on. Where-as they have exposure to buses.

Some people just dont want to be in metro because they resist change.

Look the pollution level of Delhi before and after metro!

Consider the safety of Girls!

Another argument that he puts forth in support of the BRTS is the cost of travel. Since a significant segment of the population is using two-wheelers that run at less than Re 1 per km, a good public transport system will have to be competitive with this rate to wean them away from their own transport. "Can the capital-intensive Metro do this?" he asks.

There are, of course, those who believe the Metro is no less than a plane, albeit a low-cost carrier (just Rs 6 for a short journey) -- and the swanky stations and uniformed service personnel do give the illusion of an airport, actually. Once you walk through the automated gates, heck, it even seems better than most of our crowded airports.

which one is cheaper!

When does travel by bus becomes cheaper than Train!!

Than think about accidents! those blue line buses killing atleast a person daily!!

There is no comparison between travel by bus and metro!

Metro is like heaven and bus is like hell!

You know the time when it will arrive and when it will depart!

Typical examples -- New York, Tokyo, London. "Delhi has multiple business districts and is not suited to a metro system," he says, punching holes in the business case for the Metro.

With multiple business centre metro is more likely to get even distribution of passenger that means much more convenient!

He is also miffed at the blind eye that transport planners have turned to the profile of the city's -- and the country's -- commuters. "Fifty per cent of the people in the city walk or bicycle to work. We don't talk about them at all," he laments. (And rightly so. Try being a pedestrian one day and see if you can cross a busy road.)

Thats entirely different issue!

Joshi may not have impressive numbers as far as passengers are concerned, but he is making operating profits. Ticket collections for 2005-06 are Rs 110 crore, and these are projected to more than double to Rs 250 crore by the end of next year, even though no new track will come up during this period.

See, its just the matter of time before metros become more and more popular.

The argument for extending the Metro network is similar to that of the phone network. More lines equal more usage. And Delhi has proved that it can be cost-effective in construction (Rs 175 crore per km vs Rs 250 crore for the upcoming Dubai Metro). And why not plan for the future? "A city of this size (and growing) cannot be managed by anything other than the Metro, at least on the main arterial routes," says Akhileshwar Sahay, president-transport at infrastructure consultancy Feedback Ventures.

So true.

Even if metro is broke-even in its revenue its a great boon for common people.

that really india??

By looking at that thumbnail it would be believe that picture is taken in

Inda. hell it looks looks cleaner than New Yorks subway station

Who says it's a mistake...
Problem is that every one is expecting instant results but just see the areas which it covers currently. Except CP, it doesn't pass through many commercial areas. With 2nd and 3rd phase coming, Delhi's commercial places will be better connected with Metro. Major changes will come when it reaches IGI airport, Gurgaon, Noida, Ghaziabad and other NCR regions from where lakhs of people commute to Delhi in a single day. Don't expect the results so early..wait for 3rd phase to be over. and I am sure it'll change Delhi and it's residents' way of life.
Also, when infrastructure will be ready, new commercial area will come up only in the proximity of Metro to get the advantage. Buses playing on feeder routes will make it easy for the passenger from area where there are no direct metro links. For Dwarka, it's going to be implemented soon.

Moreover, if u read carefully, DMRC is already earning enough revenue from the current lines. As commuters will grow, their earnings will also increase.

If security is the only issue then no place is safe. People get killed in temples, buses, markets... India has to create world-class infrastructure and there is not short cut to that. Delhi metro is a great addition and we need more and more of such facilities. Let us not worry about terrorism. It’s going to remain here in one or the other form... India has Chambal Dakus till date and all sorts of Virappans who can kidnap and kill people anywhere any time...India has been living and progressing with all these problems... India is the only country in the world, which is at most ease with terrorism.. Americans are frightened even of steel forks and knives ....what a world power....hahahhaaa

Taking on the Best of the World!

...Oh wow! What a thread (and what a question)!
It is very very important to understand that this corore of Rupees investment is such a huge boon for India!
I cannot emphasize enough what a huge step forward it is for ANY city in this world to start becoming more Mass transit dependent rather than rely on Cars and continue to create Traffic congestion to the point where the place becomes totally impossible to live in and/or for it to grow/develop any more in a more positive direction!

When Delhi became Metro Rail equipped it even created news here in America and other parts of the Developing/Developed Countries! That alone should tell you how is that kind of infrastructure looked at by everyone in these modern times!...
Everyone knows that God is not in the process of making any more land, right?...and to protect, preserve and make the best use of our existing Communities, Cities and places the only way forward is strat making them more Transit friendly and for the future developemnt to support that (or TOD as it is called everywhere in planning terms; Transit Oriented Development)
In short, what this TOD does is create favorable conditions for the new development to occur (while taking pressure off the existing City blocks and infrastructure)...in a very positive and well planned manner and thus with any new development (residential, commercial and Offices) Planners can take care and design and plan keeping their orientation, accessibly and proximity to the mass transit (Metro rail in this case) in mind!...

So, it's a very very positive step towards better planned Cities, specially so in places like Delhi where the Street network is bursting at the seams!

I cannot tell you with how much joy and with a proud spring in my steps I discussed and debated this with my other Planning and Urban Design colleagues here in the US, it was indeed a proud moment to tell everyone that we as a Country are making a positive step forward in terms of preserving our infrastructure and Old neighborhoods by making citizens' rely more on the transit and light rail system!

I heard that now the governments of other States in India (specially in the other Metro's) are planning a similar move, and that in itself proves what a mature and important move this has been!

Here's Hip-Hip Hooray for India, Moving forward to take on the best of the world in every field and area........

Heh!...

Anyways, all in good fun..... did like the white photoshopped mustache though!

Off course building such infrastructure is always good for a city and I am sure with a population like Delhi nothing can be a white elephant......
par you metro ibe mhare gaam tak na pahoonchi hai and its construction has caused so many problems especially in CP. Delhi traffic situation has been worsened by it, still I would praise the planners for the whole management because I never got stuck inspite of heavy construction (but was almost run over by a Bus as I didnt know that the road had shifted due to consturction in CP, was a funny scene)
And I havent still tried Delhi Metro may be next time when I go there I will, although I have heard thhey are more like Hong Kong metros and not like London Tubes, i.e. the train is like one big car instead of many cars joined together.

Delhi gets a metro makeover

Delhi gets a metro makeover

NEW DELHI: For the first time, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has outsourced the design and construction jobs on the metro phase II to a Bangalore-based engineering firm. IDEB projects and Shanghai Urban Construction Group (SUCG) have bagged the Rs 168-crore project.

The contract is to design and build an elevated viaduct of 4.56 km and five-elevated stations on the Inderlok-Mundka corridor for the second phase of the Delhi metro rail project. The project will be completed in approximately 30 months.

The Metro is also all set to reach Noida by 2009. Meanwhile, the Central Park station at Connaught Place will get a makeover, thanks to the Metro. A multi-leveled water cascade with hidden lights will also be added.

Beyond this, the DMRC will also build an amphitheater and is planning to have an area for exhibitions, which they claim will give India Habitat Centre, the current favorite for exhibitions, a run for its money.

ITs not a mistake We shoud proud to have

Its not a mistake we can compare Delhi Metro With World class such services for e.g LONDON Tubes, New York’s Subway. I would rate Delhi Metro is better among all. Believe me time will come when all of you agree the same becoz its completely future planning and we have just start here

HOPE FOR THE BEST GUYS

Cheers
