Dear Colleagues,
As most of us are well aware about the HIV-AIDS, most the Govt. Agencies are working on it. I wish to know - is there any perfect treatment for it? I know this treatable but not curable? am I right? Few days ago I learnt from one of my friends that some vaccinations are being developed? Are the vaccination is perfect?
Views from eminent friends are solicited......so that we can guide any HIV infectious patient as well as update our knowledge about this harmful disease.
with regards,
Vinod

Dear Dr. Shanwal

Sorry for my late reply...i just saw the thread. I have worked on a project called HIV as a workplace issue in collaboration with the ILO. I do not think any vaccine has been developed as yet for HIV. However, the most recent news is that International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) which an american project has partnered with GlaxoSmithKline to develop research for vaccine for prevention of the HIV condition.

IAVI is active in India too and in fact approached the indian industry to partner on this project since american companies were reluctant to produce vaccine for AIDS as they would have suffured huge losses in terms of sales of their already available anti-retro viral drugs. This also raises business ethics issues for these companies.

Anyway, Anti retro viral drugs are prescribed to people who have contracted HIV but have not progressed to AIDS stage. As you would know, many people can have the virus in their bodies without showing any symptoms of AIDS for years. These drugs help them to delay getting AIDS and live normal lives.

This is a deadly disease which is wiping out working populations in the african countries and it is present in India too in epidemic proportions. It should be treated as a disaster management issue by the government. However, the officials are turning a blind eye and even blundering the statistics of the number of HIV positive people in india.

I agree with you, there is a lot of social stigma attached to this disease too (as u can see there are no responses to this very serious topic). However, unless its talked about freely, there is no solution to this problem. People in our community think that this is not our problem because we come from good backgrounds and do not fall into trash. but I do think we should be educated about it so that we can make our young people knowledgeable about this risk.

hope this can trigger some discussion.

All the best
Priti

Thanks Priti

Pritiji,
At the outset I wish to thank you for your valuable contribution and courage you have shown in coming forward. when I could not get any response for many weeks on such a serious issue then I had no option except for leaving this thread. Anyway, I am really very happy to receive such a good and wonderful response.
Last month I went to Holland for attending an International Conference where I had a chat on this issue with Prof. Peter Salovey of Yale University. He informed me about NARI (National Aids Research Institute). NARI has also collaboration with NACO (National Aids Control Organization, India).
Let us hope that something could be done soon. As I must share that our Army Personnel are also suffering from this problem. I personally saw in an army hospital (details I think should be kept confidencial).
