As someone from the
Hooda gotra, I want to share that I deeply resonate with the idea that
Hoodas are connected to ancient Jewish roots. My grandparents followed many
Jewish customs and laws, and much of our cultural memory points toward a Judaic origin.
To give some historical context—
Israel was formed from the 12 tribes of Jacob, all of whom were blessed. Among these,
10 tribes were exiled and became the so-called
"lost tribes of Israel". Many scholars and oral traditions suggest that
Jats, especially clans like
Hooda, may be descended from the
tribes of Gad or Dan.
The
Torah, the sacred text of the Hebrews, gives us a striking picture of the tribe of Gad: that deeply align with the Jat spirit:
"Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last."
(Genesis 49:19, KJV)
➤ Meaning: Gad’s descendants may be defeated at first, but they rise and win in the end.
➤ Jat parallel: Jats, too, have faced hardship but have always emerged victorious-known for their resilience and pride.
"Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head."
(Deuteronomy 33:20, KJV)
➤ Meaning: Gad is blessed to be like a lion, fearless and fierce in battle.
➤ Jat parallel: Jats are known for fearlessness, dominating battlefields across history. Our spirit is lion-like, exactly as Gad was described. It’s no coincidence that many armies have relied on Jats for their strength and courage.
The word "Hooda" itself may have very ancient etymological links to
"Yehudi" (Jew), which suggests even deeper connections. The history of our people may stretch back much further than often recorded, possibly to the
Middle East, Indo-European migrations, and the
Scythian roots.
In essence, the
Jat warrior ethos, especially among Hoodas, mirrors the legacy of the
tribe of Gad:
proud, bold, and destined to rise like a lion even after adversity. Even culturally, there are signs. Arya Samaj, which became a spiritual foundation for many Jats, rejected idol worship, much like Judaism, which strictly upholds monotheism and avoids graven images. This alignment is not coincidental.
