अलका तोमर का जन्म उत्तर प्रदेश के मेरठ ज़िले के सिसोली गाँव में हुआ था. पारिवार के सभी सदस्य पहलवान थे इसलिए अलका को भी इस खेल को खेलने में कोई परेशानी नहीं हुई. वर्ष 1998 में अलका भी देश के लिए कुश्ती प्रतियोगिता में भाग लेने लगी. खानदानी कोच जबर सिंह सोम से अलका ने कुश्ती सीखी, उन्होंने ही अलका के पिता, चाचा और भाई को भी पहलवानी सिखाई थी. अलका के पिताजी चाहते थे कि वह कुश्ती में करियर बनाएं लेकिन माँ को बेटी का कुश्ती सीखना थोड़ा अटपटा लग रहा था. थोड़ा बहुत विरोध समाज का भी हुआ कि ये क्या हो रहा, लेकिन उनके पिताजी ने किसी की बातों पर ध्यान नहीं दिया और और इस राह पर अलका चल निकली.

कॉमनवेल्थ खेल में कुश्ती में सोना जीतने वाली अलका तोमर ने गांव के घेर की कच्ची माटी में कुश्ती का ककहरा सीखा। अखाड़ा उसे विरासत में मिला। चौ. चरणसिंह विश्वविद्यालय के कोच जबर सिंह सोम ने अलका के मल्ल हुनर को तराशने का जिम्मा संभाला। मैदान में प्रतिद्वंद्वी को पटखनी देना अलका का जूनून रहा। मेरठ-गढ़ मार्ग स्थित सिसौली गांव में साधारण किसान परिवार में जन्मी अलका को बचपन से कुश्ती का जूनून रहा। अलका के पिता नैन सिंह व दो चाचा महेश व सतीश पहलवानी के शौकीन रहे। बचपन में अलका ने घेर में कच्ची माटी को खुद का अखाड़ा बनाया। वर्ष 1999 में अलका तोमर कुश्ती के मैदान में कुछ कर गुजरने की हसरत लेकर चौ. चरणसिंह विवि के कोच जबर सिंह सोम के संपर्क में आई और उन्हें गुरु मान लिया। उस समय अलका तोमर महज 11 वर्ष की थीं। जबर सिंह ने अपनी शिष्या को पहलवानी के दांव-पेच सिखाए। अलका के दो भाई जगविन्द्र व रणविन्द्र भी विरासत से जुड़े हैं। जगविन्द्र राष्ट्रीय स्तर का खिलाड़ी है, जबकि रणविन्द्र जूनियर रेसलर है। अलका ने देशों में हुई कुश्ती चैम्पियनशिप में भाग लिया और कभी पीछे मुड़कर नहीं देखा। वर्ष 2006 में चीन में हुई वर्ल्ड चैम्पियनशिप में महिला कुश्ती में कांस्य पदक भारत की झोली में डालकर विश्व को अपने हुनर का अहसास कराया। तब अलका तोमर की छवि पश्चिमी उत्तर प्रदेश में महिला मल्ल की आइडियल के तौर पर बनी। अलका फिलहाल नोएडा स्थित शिक्षण संस्थान एनसीपीई में मास्टर डिग्री एंड फिजीकल एजुकेशन की छात्रा है और दिल्ली में एमटीएनएल में जॉब कर रही है। गांव की माटी में पली-बढ़ी अलका तोमर को कॉमनवेल्थ गेम्स में कुछ कर दिखाने का मौका मिला तभी से पश्चिमी उप्र के खेल प्रेमियों की निगाहें भी उस पर लगी।

1. India Won 38-GOLD, 27-SILVER, 36-BRONZE Total 101 medals.

2. Out of this(101), JAT won 18 GOLD, 10 -SILVER, 13 -BRONZE ->Total 41 medals.
