I know that a lot of Jats actively participate in adventure sports. Just wanted to know if any Jatland members are active in such sports.

I was a very active paragliding pilot till a few years ago and can share my experience with members. It will be nice to know how others feel about such sports.

Mere bhai Naveen, rozyana Miami kae Cuban (and other latino) drivers sae gaadi bachaate hue katee 'oobstakle coarse' sa ban rhaya sai ude to!

Just Kidding (not about the latino drivers though! :D )... per anyways, yhaan Beach Towns ka ek faydaa to hai; Water sports are huge; Have tried Jetsking (aare wa paani main motorcycle si chalaana!!! ;) )a lot recently... It is an awesome high making the turns with the water being sprinkled high...(even the tumbles are fun, cause the Jetski immediately shuts itself off and allows one to get back on...although if you are not comfortable with swimming and the sea water, it's probably not a sport for you!)...

Have looked longingly at the other water sports like water sking and surfing...but hardly 'that' adevnterous kinds... plus Miami beaches do not send up that high waves (as one would need for surfing)... so content myself to other 'beach' sports! ;)

By the way...white water rafting is something else that haven't tried yet but apparently is a super exciting sport (and I am not talking about sitting in some vacation promotional rafting where you are just waving a paddle while the main instructor(s) do all the work!)

Naveen bhai, jaan ke achha laga ki aap paragliding pilot the. I am thinking of taking flying classes from http://learntofly.com/ which has a airport near my home. The full course is very expensive but am thinking of just taking 4-5 classes just to feel how it feels like behind wheel(is that what it is called?) of plane;-)). I will contact you and ask few questions.

I love adventure games. In my view the most adventurous game is Skydiving. Few monthds back I did AFF(Accelerated Free Fall) from 4km and fell freely for 1min with 140mi/hr speed then landed smoothly. That feeling is unforgettable for lifelong. I would strongly suggest to adventure seekers. Pics can be seen at http://www.sitekreator.com/vinodks/main_page.html

Let me brag little more:-) My latest passion is equestrian. Its feel so great but here they teach slowly. I am stuck at trotting for a long time, want to move on to cantering(becuz speed is sexiest thing).

Shailendra, yeah try white water rafting. Its awesome but if you are looking for more adventure try kayaking in river. Kayak boat is very unstable, it flips easily and requires more skills to row. I remember when I flipped in currents in Potomac river(in DC) and was scared as hell, tried to climb on boat vainly, ultimately was retrieved by friends.
Good luck guys!!

The only adventure sport I have done is paragliding and that too with an instructor. That was some years ago in interlaken and was an extremely memorable because of two things: the skyview of the sheer beauty of the two lakes which meet in interlaken and the experience of flying like a bird (without any control of my wings though!) I wouldn't mind learning to be an instructor when time permits.

A great sense of achievement which i remember is rock climbing....i just climbed a very difficult wall in an indoor facility and reaching the top even in those artificially made conditions was something...and i was wondering what if i did that in a natural setting....would be awesome!

I just hope i get to create more chances in future...

Thanks for sharing your experiences Shailendra, Vinod and Priti. Earlier, Navin Guliya had shared his experience about his trip to the highest motorable road in another thread. Mr. Khalkhande had also written about a Jat who went to Antartica. I know that a lot of other Jats, mostly with military background, have been at the forefront of adventure sports.

I got involved with paragliding in the beginning of 98 when I moved to San Diego in Calif from the East Coast. I learnt sailing first, since San Diego is also next to water. After a while I started paragliding also. Since, I could not put in time for both sports so gave up sailing after 6 months.

I learnt paragliding at the famous Torrey Pines gliderport, located in La Jolla, slightly north of San Diego city. It is a very historic gliderport, as it still has an old runway that was used by Charles Lindbergh when he used to fly sailplanes before he became world famous for the first solo flight across the Atlantic. Anyways, there is hardly any sailplanes nowadays and have been replaced by hang-gliders and paragliders along with hobbyists flyling their RCs (radio controlled model planes). The gliderport itself is on a cliff overlooking the ocean, about 200-300 ft high above the beach. It is also next to the world famous Torrey Pines golf course, where PGA tournament takes place. I have seen all the famous golfers from about 100 to 200 ft above while they were actually playing in that tournament, two years in a row. That used to give me quite a kick! The gliderport itself is very famous and pilots from all over the world tarvel here because it offers almost all year round flying conditions for both hang and para gliders. You can read about it here:

www.flytorrey.com

I got my advanced pilot rating in 2000 from USHGA (US Hanggliding Association: http://www.ushga.org/) and continued flying for a few years more and may have logged 500+ hours. I have flown at many sites in the US (both coastal as well as inland), Mexico and Canada. Once I even brought my glider back with me to Jaipur but did not get enough time to fly. For some time I was the only pilot from our part of the world flying here on the west coast of the US.

In US till three years ago, paragliding or hangliding was still not recognized by any govt agency as it was considered part of extreme sports. Europe was a little better in that regard where government bodies oversea this activity and German pilots mostly win or used to win world championships.

One of the main reasons I left it was because my instructor, who was from Israel, got killed in an accident while performing a maneuver over the same cliffs where we learnt to fly. Secondly, 9/11 grounded all of us for a few days. Slowly, for a few other reasons, I lost interest.

I will be more than happy to share more with members if they want.

Alrighty guys count me in too. The entire trip is still vivid in front my eyes when I went hiking to Rohtang Pass when I was in India. It felt like a dream destination for an adventurer. Still remember those typical misty white clouds coming in our way and the magical ‘walk in the clouds’..Ahhh!! Words fail me. ..Though I didn’t trek beyond the pass but that was enough to leave me mesmerized.

And then I got a chance to water surf lately here in San Francisco, a surfer’s city. Thanks to the whole bunch of friends who accompanied me rather I should say taught me since that was my first water surfing experience. It was cold …it was treacherous, fickle, seasonal and inconsistent….freaked me out completely initially. Later I started enjoying and wish to hop into the ocean again at the very thought of it …that was some thrilling episode..

I find water sports irresistible …But wait a minute …Oh! ..think if you are swimming with a sea lion or a giant sea mammal nuzzle up to you while you're out there. …eeeekkkkk…

Rohtang Pass is the highest point on the Manali-Keylong road, 51-km from Manali (ab tumhe ye bhi nahi pata hoga ki Manali kahan hai.. :) …it’s a town in Himachal Pradesh). It offers immense trekking opportunities in the background of a panoramic views of captivating mountains in the flowing clouds….

Hts OF ADVENTURE....surviving jatland since 2002

Dear all,

It is after a long long time that something interesting has come up on jatland, other then HUMOUR section offcource. Well i have been a keen adventurer and towards that end its been of great help to be in armed forces.

I have been to all the water sports right from water skiing, sailing( j-24. 420, enterprise class), wind surfing and kyaking and has few accolades achieved.
Having been to NDA,automaticallly makes u eligible to mother of all adventure besides horse riding and camping. But, it is only recently that i got involved in para gliding( meagre 15 flights) and, now in free fall( just completed 5 static line jump). Unlike foreign countries where one straight away starts off with free fall, (handled by instructor), in india one has to graduate after static lines.
i did a basic course in snow skiing at HMAS(himalayan mountaineering and allied sports) at manali and they also conduct wonderful adventure camps viz. riverrafting, trekking to rohtang and mountaineering along with lodging and boarding at a very subsidised cost.

I would be more then happy to be a part of adventure club here and exchange notes. :)

ps....ram ram jagmohan uncle

Bhai Lakra,

RAM RAM,

Bhai ke baat se, byah vyah te na karva liya tanne ar Solanki ne? Kai mheene te no 'Dua Salaam'? Hope all is well with the Indian Navy!!! Would surely call up when I am in Delhi next. My visit will coincide with a golf tournament at DGC in Oct. Hopefully. Do call me when you come to Mumbai.

Poonam Ji,

Sunpat adda on Rohtak Bypass was one of the most happening place. Specially when Bobby was released in 1973, I think, and Ek Duje Ke Liye sometime later. College ke dinaa mein sab kuchh hua karta, vishvas, takat, duniya ko badal kar rakh dene ki chaah vagera vagera, bas kami hua karti thee to bas pissan ki. No money!!! But still saving money to see these movies and then travel in Haryana Roadways from Sunpat to Rohtak and back, with all the TAU's and SUNDU's was an adventure par excellence. A new episode of extreme laughter at each of the stops at Baiyanpur, Rohat, Kharkhoda, Sisana, Bhalaut etc. Who can forget those wonderful days spent at a time when there was so much of time. Aaj kal te race laag rhi hai, rat race where only a rat will win.

It is very necessary to be nostalgic in life. What passed off as ordinary and routine in those days was actually extraordinary but sadlly that is gone for ever. Those were such wonderful days.

Ciao.

mountaineering institute manali

think i have been to the mountaineering institute a couple of times in my school days...isn't it the one which is across the river on the other side to the mall road? There is one Mr. Guliya there who is himself a fitness freak and run with stones bundled with his feet :)

Out of curiosity...is NDA open to girls now?

Aap to adventure sports ke guru nikle Mr. Lakra...
