The basic purpose of wearing clothes was, perhaps, to cover some body parts and to protect ourselves from the vagaries of weather. With the passage of time the pattern of clothing became a symbol of identity for different tribes. Similarly, the original idea of turban (pagri) was, I guess, to protect our head and neck from sunshine and dust. That is why it originated in those areas which are relatively hotter and dry (Sahara Desert : (Sudan, Morocco, Niger) Parts of Arabian Dessert, Pakistan, Rajasthan and adjoining parts of Haryana). With the passage of time ‘Pagdri’ was also taken as a symbol of pride and “chaudharat” by some social groups like ours, and also Muslims in some countries (Sudan & parts of Pakistan).
The custom of wearing turban (pagri) is waning fast and I do not think it has to do anything with the prestige of Jats. Fashion keeps changing with the passage of time and the type of clothes one should wear is a matter of individual choice. A Jatni in bikini on the beach will always remain a Jatni and a Jat in Coat and Tie will also remain a Jat. Similarly, a Britisher cannot be converted into a Jat simply by putting a pagri on his head and a British lady cannot become a Jatni by wearing Ghaghra Chunni or Salwar Kameez.
The brothers/sisters from UP are not lesser Jats simply because they prefer a cap to the Pagri. Some parts of UP are much more advanced educationally, economically and in otherwise, than the other Jat dominated States. Therefore, we must avoid this kind of comparison. A Jat is a Jat whether he stays in Manhattan or in a remote village of Rajasthan, UP or Haryana.
Remain united guys.
