Really Unfortunate

Commissioning of Kapil Dev in the Territorial Army directly at the rank of Lt.Col. is really unforunate. At the other end of the spectrum, we have officers who have undergone the rigours of Academy trainings, fighting some of the deadliest insurgencies in the world and other not so favourable situations and circumstances and here we have the government fiddling with the last citadel of our crumbling democracy.

Kapil Dev has done the country proud in the past and can be honoured with other recognitions including Padma Vibhushan or for that matter even the Bharat Ratan. The very uniform and the respect it commands and for which the soldiers don't spare even a drop of their sweat and blood has been handed on a platter.

In the forces, you have to earn every piece of brass on your shoulders - it can and should never be presented on a platter - Wrong example set...

People have not got the point here regarding the honorary appointment of Kapil Dev as Lt. Col. in TA. He has been projected as a brand ambassador to encourage younger generation to join armed forces. Some people are in the habit of criticizing any thing come in their way like the opposition parties do in parliament.

Good move !

I don't see anything wrong in Commissioning of Kapil Dev as Lt. Col. Does honarary Doctorate Degrees from Universities set a bad example which universities do so often to honour a well known person. So many famous writers received D. Lit. Degree from respective Universities.

Infact, it is a good step taken by the Indian Army and Kapil himself and as it will encourage common people and also motivate the people working around him. Kapil Dev was well known for his fighting spirit on the field. It maybe a different ground for him but a fighter can prove himself on any ground.

I hope it will also encourage some other famous personalities to join the 'Service to the Nation' idea he brought forward.

Great Move Kapil !
All the best for the new responsibilities ahead.:)

Don't clap for the sake of clapping

Again something personal written against a fellow Jatlander - personal criticism. Don't understand why do some people have to get personal. Please leave personal grudges behind when you come to Jatland.

What the Indian Army needs is not Brand Ambassadors, instead what it needs is better pay & perks, better amenities to them and their families, better post retirement benefits. I am sure with the above benefits, the young aspirants would get more attracted towards the Armed Forces as a career option in comparison to other options. Today it is Kapil Dev who has directly got commissioned in the TA at the rank of Lt.Col. without any toil (hard work) at the border, tomorrow it might be Laloo Prasad Yadav who might be directly commissioned at the rank of Brigadier or Gen. - You never know. The government should not politicise and interfere with the working of the Armed forces which till some time back was sacrosanct.

As far as acting like an opposition political party is concerned, yes an active citizen should be an opposition party and scrutinise any and every government decision because it affects me and my fellow citizens. I cannot keep my eyes closed and clap everytime for the sake of clapping. Hope the message is sent across loud and clear

Sunil, You are quite right here without any doubt that Indian Army deserves the above said benefits at first instance.

Today it is Kapil Dev who has directly got commissioned in the TA at the rank of Lt.Col. without any toil (hard work) at the border, tomorrow it might be Laloo Prasad Yadav who might be directly commissioned at the rank of Brigadier or Gen. - You never know. I suppose that Kapil Dev doesn't fall into the category of Lalu Prasad Yadav by any standartds. I believe that Army officials who have commissioned Kapil had looked upon the background of the person whom they are appointing. As it happenend first time in Indian Army ( I hope i am right here ) so they surely had given a intense thought about the future outcome of this voluntary option.

Armed Forces - the last intact institution should be left unaltered/untouched

There is a sports quota in the civil administration including the Railways and the police departments where any eligible and outstanding sportsperson gets appointed at the entry level of that particular cadre to recognise his/her contribution to the sport.

Vijay bhai, Getting commissioned into the TA is not the same as being granted honorary degrees. The TA personnel these days are fighting insurgencies in Jammu & Kashmir and the North-East. Moreover, they may be further called up for active service in case of overt external agression by the enemy, the possibility of which very well exists, the flashpoints being J&K and Arunachal Pradesh.

For all practical purposes, let's not equate the above mentioned options with that of commissioning a sportsperson into the TA and that too DIRECTLY AT THE RANK OF LT.COL. (The very rank for which to reach, the service officers risen through the rank of Lieutenant, have to toil for years). There would have been nothing wrong had Kapil Dev got commissioned at the rank of Lieutenant just like any other aspirant. Ask any Armed Forces officer who has toiled for years to reach the rank of Lt.Col. about instances like these and he will tell you how demotivating it is. Today it's Kapil Dev tomorrow there will be lot's many more and in fact a majority of them being undeserving. As far as the Army's consent for granting commission to Kapil is concerned, I am sure as with other cases, their disapproval gets buried under the weight of civil orders.

It's nothing more than fiddling with the way the Armed Forces work. As it is, the Armed Forces personnel are not too happy with the sixth pay commission recommendations, and with instances like these it would start getting a little too much for them to swallow.

With the institutions of Civil Administration, Judiciary, Politics already in tatters and bad shape, the Armed Forces is the only AND last institution left which is to a large extent still in shape. This very institution necessary for the very survival of the nation should not be fiddled with.

P.S.: Nishant, I am not your dear. Please use it (DEAR) for your actually near and dear ones.

I very much second your thoughts & viewpoint here Sunil . Even I was taken by surprise when I heard this news! Thou I respect Kapil dev a lot and he is one of the best sportsman India has ever produced but still its not acceptable to appointed him as Lt. Col. ... as you stated he could have appointed as Lt. !! Rules are Rules !!

I don't think it'll inspire young generation to opt for Army. Army is something else it dont require any brand ambassador at all ! The Brave men of Army themselves are biggest brand ambassadors and martyrs are inspiration for all.

Its quite disheartening indeed !

I wonder what kind of inspiration and encouragement can Kapil Dev bring to Indian youth who wants to join armed forces. Remembers few years back Kapil Dev was involved in too many controversies and his house in Delhi was raided. He is a 'Man of controversies'.
Not a good choice at all.Above all Defense forces doesnt require such kind of Brand Ambassadors.

nice thread nd gud discussion going on, except for sum nonsense created by a JAT fanatic. (mods pls. keep a watch here in order to maintain the sanctity of the thread).

ppl here have a tendency of jumping to conclusions without getting into the depth of the topic. in fact few here are inspired by others point of view. if expressed nicely they follow the same line of thot nd r hell bent to stick to the foot steps of the reasoning they followed initially. w/o commenting on the topic, i wud like put put forward this information... wch i feel is must, before other members start giving their opinion.

A few facts about TA (Territorial Army). also pls. have a luk here...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_Territorial_Army

The Territorial Army is part of the regular Army and has various roles, including relieving the regular personnel from static duties and assistance to the civil administration in times of calamities. TA personnel can also voluntarily serve in active duty for short durations and several officers and men have won gallantry awards for exceptional bravery.

Interestingly, the Territorial Army, which has a sanctioned strength of just over 40,000 personnel, was keen on roping in young MPs and MLAs to join its ranks to set an example for youngsters. A presentation was also held at the Parliament house last year but the force did not receive any applications from the elected representatives.

Brahm, Thanx for the first hand information about TA:)

It is interesting that TA was keen on young MP's and MLA's to join its ranks but nobody responded that way. So, there must be some responsibilities which our fat skinned politicians are not willing to accept.

Now as a well known sportsman is setting up an example by joining this Army and people see political misuse behind this.

Please answer honestly :

Is kapil Dev not a better candidate than anyone of our politicians who are not willing to join ?

why the need of brand ambassador ?

Is kapil Dev not a better candidate than anyone of our politicians who are not willing to join ?
vijay, for sure its true tht kapil wud b 1000 times a btr option compared to any politician, however the big question tht 1st cums to my mind here is - why the need of brand ambassador ?

having a brand ambassador can b a gud idea... however agn i'm forced to keep my opinion reserved for now, cos i think tht we need to first discuss... why the need to hav these brand ambassadors nd tht too for indian armed forces ? i guess, we need to 1st introspect as to y we see a mass exodus of officers in our armed forces ? y no one these days seems to to be willing to join these forces wch hitherto have been a pride of evry aspiring indian youth to serve india by joining these forces. the answer is here - the 6th pay commission has made a mockery of our armed forces thru their irrational recommendations.
very rightly, armed forces hav refused to implement 6th pay commission for the time being. the armed forces chiefs hav said tht the anomalies in pay structure of the officials of the armed forces when compared to civilian officer may adversely affect the morale of forces. this was vry much contrary to their expectations of at least doubling their wages, citing reasons of "high risk, trauma nd turbulence of services".

quite obviously, the armed forces chiefs r now worried tht the anomalies in the pay structure of armed forces officials viz a viz civilian officials can deter many bright young men frm joining the armed forces in the future. even now there is a big gap of officials in the armed forces wch is increasing day by day. the sort of talent tht the army requires at officers level can easily get several time higher pay package than they actually get in the armed forces in India. appointment of brand ambassadors in my opinion shud take back seat, until the anomalies of the 6th pay commission r sorted out.

d'u think tht the annual cost to govt. exchequer for 450 crores (if i'm correct) was too much in the asking ? i wud b pleased to see wat others hav to say.

Why not Kapil Dev...!!

achha to ab hamare jato ke ladke inn refugee/ bhappo/pappo.. se encourage ho ke army join karenge...abb tak kisse se encorage ho kar hum army join karte aaye hain...
jiss kaum ke khilaaf Ch.Chhotu Ram hamesha boolte aaye thhe aaj hamare ladko ko uss kaum se encourage hona paddega..??

I think he can be a very good inspiration for our Youth, especially the Jat youth who now a days have found it easier to sell their high priced lands and waist away their money amidst alcohol and bad company.

He is a Haryana boy and is a very good example for the anyone who would like to take an example. I dont think that the greatness of being a Jat should be to belittle the achievements of anyone other than a Jat and live in air castles that "jatton nein hi saabh kuch kiya hai, baki to sabh dhool mein lath marne mein lage hai"

As far as the controversies are concerned, I say innocent till proven guilty. If tomorrow the Police was to come and raid anyone's house out of sheer doubt and pressure from the corridors of power, it doesnt mean that they are guilty. Nothing was ever proven against him, so it is very unreasonable to hold him guilty as a man of controversy just because he was implicated and never convicted.

More educated and informed replies to such good subjects would be well appriciated rather then just coming up with RANDOM things just to be read in a thread.

Mr SUNIL KADIAN I do agree to your point that it is a very tough road for the army men to get to a Lt.Col, but I think sometimes the army needs to do these socially noticeable stunts to get into the public eye. Will it actually inspire the youth to join the Army, I have my reservations about that for sure. Never the less you point about improving the army's financial status would definitely attract more Indian youth towards it, but you have to consider that making Kapil Dev a Lt.Col is a cheaper affair then increasing everyone's salary.:)

Nothing surprising here!

Most countries have Reserve Forces/ National Guard just like we have TA in India.

Many have barely served active duty and hold high ranks.

Infact I have friends in Law School who are Second Lieutenants in US Marine Corps and haven't served a single day active duty. They will serve 42 Months in JAG Core upon graduation and may never serve a single day again while they are in the Marine reserves unless they are called upon to defend or prosecute a special case. These people may retire as 2 and 3 Star Generals with only 42 months of service.

Brahm, these are surely valid concerns and i totally agree with you and Sunil ( he already pointed out ). I also do agree that higher salary packages can attract more youth towards Army rather than appointing Brand Ambassadors. But that's totally a political decision. Only politicians and bureaucrats can resolve this issue while Army is at the recieving end. Government can waste hundreds of crores rupees in useless meetings, celebrations, parliament, foreign tours but seems reluctant to spend that money on the needful and deserving organizations.

Regarding kapil, i don't see any political approach/agenda behind Kapil's recruitment and seems quite a normal incident where Kapil may have contacted the Indian Army or vice versa. Kapil seems happy to join 'Service to the Nation' duty while Indian army welcomed the Indian Cricketer of the Millenium with open hands. Nobody seems to complain.

It's certainly not a good enough deal for Indian Army but something is better than nothing. :)

That is the Difference

Dear Mr. Sura,

I think, you have raised a very good question.

My reaction to this is : That is the difference in the progress we have made vs. they have made.

No body cares, what caste are you born in, what people care is what have you done for the country, your own society, and for that matter even for yourself and your family. In retrospect, some soul searching might just give answer to your questions.
