Loneliness
Dear Friends,
I am overwhelmed by the response to the thread on loneliness,as also the love and affection shown to some one who was not known till a few months back, and even now he can be visualised more by what moves on the internet, rather than face to face.
After the sad demise on 30 October 2000 ,to fill my lonely hours , I started writing a book 'Letters from the Border and Other Less Told Stories' which took some time to take shape and i published it in 2003.
It the story of the Signal Section ,I was then commanding then as a Captain, during the Sino Indian conflict of 1962, the story unfolds through the letters I wrote to my wife in far away Dehradun with me at the Tri-Junction of India -Bhutan and Tibet, one a day. The book can be looked from different point views depending on the reader, A love story or history of the conflict or from the technical angle, in how the communication circuits and links were derived and operated with the type of equipment we had in the Indian Army at that time.
To give a feel of the book, since you all seems to appreciate what I write i have posted below some extracts from the Preface.
Enjoy
Love and best wishes from an old foggy brigadier. Lakshman Singh\

Preface
…This is a story of human endurance, team spirit, dedication and high morale, of initiative and expediency, of experimentation, of mutual faith and confidence at all levels ….
This narrative also focuses on the emotional and human dimensions in a conflict and does not stake any claim or pass any judgement, even by hind sight,……. The narrative follows the events as seen and experienced by the young eyes of a junior officer at that time.
The source material has been……, my sketchy diary, my own faded memory and finally the letters to my late wife Rosy, which she had saved and I found in her effects. I am not too sure that she would have allowed me this liberty if she was alive today. However, I feel the most creditable source of emotions and feelings experienced in any critical situation in life are the letters written at that time to some one really close.
….. ‘The Story’ unfolds through the letters to my wife (I wrote to her daily or whenever I could, she as and when she wrote) therefore, it would be of relevance to highlight the significance of the format adopted. The purpose of including the extracts from the letters is not only to create the environment prior to and during that period, but also, more importantly, to bring out the feelings and mental conflict of a young officer, split vertically down mentally and emotionally. Living two separate lives day in and day out, torn between duty and pangs of separation from his young wife as also worries about his elderly parents……
……I doubt if any soldier serving or retired would open his heart and innermost emotions in public by publishing his letters in any form. However, there was no other way I could have brought out the conflict between duty, responsibility and desire. The delicate balance between the pride in soldiering, under most adverse circumstances, and the constant worry about the welfare of the family back home, mental trauma of the wife, the small child who had started calling his photo as uncle’s, his sick mother and elderly father, old but proud of the fact that the son was on the border doing some thing important and necessary as demanded by his profession.
One of the letters that my father had written to my wife during the period of the operations is ample testimony, if any is required, regarding the feelings back home and the nationalistic feelings prevailing in the country at that time
If the qualities required in a soldier, of being able to suppress his personal feelings and put the domestic problems on the back burner when duty demands get highlighted the purpose of this effort would have been amply served
