India is the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend and the great grand mother of tradition.

Mark Twain.

If there is one place on the face of earth where all dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India .

French scholar Romain Rolland.

India conquered and dominated China culturally for 20 centuries without ever having to send a single soldier across her border.

Hu Shih

(former Chinese ambassador to USA )

ALL OF THE ABOVE IS JUST THE TIP OF THE ICEBERG, THE LIST COULD BE ENDLESS.
BUT, if we don't see even a glimpse of that great India in the India that we see today, it clearly means that we are not working up to our potential; and that if we do, we could once again be an evershining and inspiring country setting a bright path for rest of the world to follow.
I hope you enjoyed it and work towards the welfare of INDIA .

Western mentality

.
Due to India's rising economic and military power, the Westerners have suddenly started portraying India as an attractive and decent country. Till a few years ago, India was being portrayed by them as a nation of snake-charmers, sadhus. wild animals and magicians. It is truly said: might is right. Our economic might is pinching them now.

But some facts given in the article above seem doubtful - the figure of 3.22 million Indians being in USA should be cross-checked. We have read that it is 1 million or 10 lakhs. Many of our brethern there are well placed and rich compared to other groups in USA - Hispanics, black Africans and native Indians. But our brethern in USA have not surpassed the white Europeans who are dominating in fields of finance, industry (corporate world), top Govt. jobs and media etc.

In my opinion, saying that India never invaded any country in the last 1000 years, is a negative aspect and is only partially true. Westerners want to portray that Indians are coward and do not have the capacity to overpower another country. Though we have not invaded any place which is distantly located across the seas, those accessible by land route were influenced by our might and sometimes invaded too. Akbar (though he was a 'foreigner' of Mughal dynasty) had invaded Uzbekistan and the cities of Balakh and Bukhara were captured, though these areas again gained autonomy after 2 or 3 decades. Hari Singh Nalwa captured Afghanistan and so did Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Mughal empire ended after being defeated by those mighty kings and Shivaji, Tipu Sultan etc. The queen of Jhansi had superior long range guns fitted in Jhansi castle in 1857. Unfortunately, that battle was lost. Britisher call it 'Mutiny' and we call it 'The first war of Independence'.

Westerners want to confine us to 1000 years only which is a black part of history. They do not want to go back to 1200 years back. 2500 years ago, Alexander ("The Great!") who wanted to capture the world, was defeated by Chandragupta Maurya. Alexander's sister was then married to Chandragupta. Westerners call Ashoka "the Great". Ashoka was the king who was responsible for the fall of Gupta empire which comprised entire India, including Afghanistan. Ashoka devoted his entire energy in making monasteries and spread of Buddhism - immediately after his death, the empire split into pieces. Westerners do not want to give the title "Great" to Chandragupta Maurya.

Earlier, Hitler used to think that Indians are slaves of Britishers, were coward in nature and hence were unable to liberate themselves. When Subhash Chandra Bose sided with him and Indian Jawans from British Army paraded in Berlin, he was surprised to see those 6-feet Indian Jawans, mostly from north India.

The New York Times of 17 January 2006 carries an article by Nicholas D. Kristof, which compares India with China. This article has also appeared in the International Herald Tribune of 18 January 2006 (yesterday). But unfortunately, it is not available on NY Times web-page (but could be accessed on payment basis). Hence, I am unable to attach it here. But I have the print version and can place on the site by re-typing, if members desire so. In the penultimate paragraph, Kristof writes:

"The bottom line is that the once-great nation of India is reawakening from several centuries of torpor, and facing less risk of a political cataclysm than China. India is poised to again be a great world power".

But in the very next para (the last para of the article), he writes:

"But overall, my bet is that China will still grow faster and win the race of the century. I'm going to tell my kids to keep studying Chinese, rather than switch to Hindi."

So, this is the Western mentality ! In coming days, more articles about India will appear due to the forthcoming scheduled visit of President Bush to India.

Mandeep

You are right Chandrgupta Maurya didn't defeated Alexander an neither was married to Alexander's sister.
Infact Cnahdragupta Maurya defeated Selucus Nicator, the Macedonian ruler of the Northwestern territories captured by Alexander.Chandragupta also seized Punjab, Kabul, Khandahar, Gandhara and Persia from Seluces.
Seluces' daughter was married to Chandragupta.

"Selucus failed and had to conclude a treaty with Chandragupta by which he surrendered a large territory including, in the opinion of certain writers, the satrapies of Paropanisadai (Kabul), Aria (Herat), Arachosia (Qanadahar) and Gedrosia (Baluchistan), in return for 500 elephants. The treaty was probably cemented by a marriage contract. A Greek envoy was accredited to the Court of Pataliputra."

Thanks

Friends,

Many thanks for corrections and your valuable contribution to this debate. I had a faint idea of this fact at the time of writing. Indeed it was Selucus.

My central point is that Westerners have tried to weaken us by reminding us only the negative aspects of our history.
