Singh sahab,
Lehman brothers was not rescued, it closed. Govt came for rescue of the companies only when they realized, it might effect the overall economy. So they came for rescue only when stakes were bigger.(Too big to fail, in case of AIG and BOA) Still there are people who think govt should not have involved and let the companies fail(Free market)

Sacking of anyone is not justified, even if the company may have to be closed down. In that scenario it becomes liability of the government to save the sinking ship of that company and this is done by Governments in developed world. America is a case in point. When companies like Lehman Brothers and Citi Group were on the verge of bankruptcy Federal Government came to their rescue.

Dear Friends companies are not here because our country needs them but because they need our country. This is largest market now for various products or better if i say almost every product. Companies are not giving anything to our country but it is us that are giving them livelyhood. .

Rakesh bhai,
This is both ways, We need them as much as they need us, may be more...

Such incident makes our reputation as polemic state, then how we can be number one Haryana ?

bhai jab kisi cheez ke bare mai theek tarah se gyan na ho to chup rehna hi behtar hai...

ek baat socho... ki maruti ke sirf manesar plant mai hi unrest kyon rehta hai? jab ki Udhyog vihar wale plant mai peacefully kaam chalta hai...
ek bar comparison bhi sun lo dono plants ka... maruti ke udhyog vihar plant se jitni production 15 saal mai hui hai utni manesar plant ne do-dhai saal mai achieve kar li... without putting quality at stake... infact quality standards of manesar plat is far better thn udhyog vihar plat and suzuki's japan plants... or agar kisi plant ki aisi performance aisi hai to wahan kaam karne wale labor na to gunde hongae or na hi kaamchor...

ofcourse desh ko modi jaise leaders ki jarurat hai... par jis tarike se maruti labor se kaam le ruhi thi, waise agar maruti gujarat mai bhi kaam karwayegi to wahan pe bhi yahi hoga jaisa manesar plant mai hua hai... balki yahan govt ka support to hai.. aise galat tariko pe to modi ki government kabi bhi company ka saath nahi degi... or dena bhi nahi chahiye...

is baat mai koi do-raye nahi hai ki kisi bhi problem ka solution violent tarike se nahi nikalta... or solution hamesha baith ke hi nikalta hai... but is baat ke liye bhi maruti ki senior mgmt hi jimmedar hai... unhone baith kar solution nikale ka rasta hi nahi rukha hai... wahan labor union hi nahi hai... mere hisaab se jo ki honi jarori hai... or labor union company and mgmt ke liye hi beneficial hai... agar union ho ti mgmt ko ye bhi pata ruhega ki baat kiske saath karni hai or convince kisko karna hai... in absence of union mgmt ko sare labor ko convince karna padega, jo ki impossible hai... mai khud mgmt mai hu or labor ki union ki support mai hu...

labor union ke bina bhi acche se kaam chal sakta hai, agar company ka HR (HRDD-Human Resource Development Dept.) thoda labor ke bare mai bhi soche... but sadly HR, employees ko company ki assets samajhne ke bajai, mgmt ki puppet ke tarike se kaam karta hai...

bhai itihaas gavah hai... vo insaan, jisne itne violent step uthaye (halaki ye justified nahi hai), usne pahle kai raaste apnaye hongae, but jab sab raste bandh ho gaye tab violent step opt kiya or fir logo ne unko pehle to oppose kiya, ye bol kar ki there is no place of violence in our educated society but fir baad mai uski sacchai ka pata chalne pe unke liye daya bhi jata di... or is cycle se bhagat singh, subash chander bose, paan singh tomar, ho kar gujare hain... pehle to unke saamne koi raashta nahi chooda or violent tarika apnane pe majboor kiya... or violent raste pe jate hi unko anti-social declare kar diya... or fir baad mai sacchai pata chalne ke baad unko hero bana diya...

mere hisaab se to govt and labor welfare depts ko first labor strike pe hi investigation karna chahiye tha.. or ye pata lagana chahiye tha ki hui kyon hai or kya preventive measures liye ja sakte hain... agar us time pe hi sab ke consern sun lete to shayad, haalat itne na bigadte... or agar maruti gujarat mai hoti to modi yahi karta.. first strike ke time pe hi koi dhang ka solution impliment karwa deta...

or ek baat or... kya aapne observe kiya hai ki is incident ke kitne reason maruti ab tak de chuki hai... kabhi to wahan ki mgmt bolti hai "ek supervisor ne communal comment kar diya tha, or labor ko gussa aa gaya".. fir next day unka statement aaya ki "doosi companies ne ye sara incident sponser kiya hai"... fir statement aaya ki "isme nexalities ka haath hai"... or jo sach hai uske bare mai ek baar bhi nahi bola... haan ek baar uski hint jaroor de di, ye bol kar ki maruti plant manesar mai hi ruhega... means ki acceptability of error made by maruti... and reflection ki hamari bhi isme barabar ki galati thi...

ofcourse jin logo ne HR manager ko maara or plant mai tood-food machai, unko saza milni chahiye... but mgmt ke un logo ko bhi saja deni chahiye jinki wajah se labor ko aise step uthane pade...

Economic times of today carries an article describing 4 big causes for the what happened at Manesar. Some of the things have been discussed in this thread too.

[h=1]Four reasons behind Maruti Suzuki's Manesar problems[/h]

The Missing India connect

Since 2007, two important changes have happened at Maruti. One, Shinzo Nakanishi, the current MD of Maruti Suzuki, took over the reins from Jagdish Khattar. RC Bhargava, who was a director, was made chairman. Two, Maruti and the India market are also becoming increasingly important for Suzuki Motors. Till recently, Maruti contributed more than half of the parent's profits.

As Maruti's contribution to Suzuki has increased, the latter's tendency to control India operations has increased. Agreed, it has an Indian chairman but Bhargava is 78 years old. It does have many senior Indian executives who have been 'lifers' at Maruti. But insiders who will speak on the condition of anonymity say the Japanese voice counts and often tends to dominate crucial decisions. Culturally, Indians and Japanese are far apart. Their sense of discipline, punctuality, employee connect too are very different. Some loss of connect with Indians is expected.

Leaner, Meaner Pressures

The challenges of running manufacturing outfits have surged. Costs and wages have increased and sales are poor & volatile. Doing business is difficult. Doing profitable business is even more difficult. Every company is figuring out ways to bring down costs and improve productivity. Most have contract labour to bring in flexibility and reduce costs. At Maruti's Manesar factory, 40% workers are on contract and their salary could be half of the regular workers. Maruti is among the better pay masters.

Amid all this, competitive intensity in the marketplace for Maruti has never been as severe. Being a volume player, the only way for it to survive and flourish is to churn out more and more cars. All this has translated into relentless pressure to improve productivity and margins at all levels. For Maruti, this pressure is particularly high. Not surprisingly, the Manesar plant, that churns out two top-selling models in the Maruti stable — Swift and Dzire — is at the heart of all the strife.

Young & Restless Workers

In Haryana, young blue-collar workers have seen dramatic changes around them. Land prices have surged as Gurgaon has become a commercial hub. Overnight, people have become rich and their lives have transformed simply because they made a killing selling their land. Such changes have re-calibrated worker expectation who have seen their sleepy little hamlet transform into a city of high rises and malls in a decade.

They are less tolerant and fairly aggressive in their expectations and how they want to achieve it. Poor wage hikes and raging inflation have queered the pitch further, resulting in an impatient, militant workforce, which believes in aggressive posturing. Sonu Gujjar, the leader of the labour unrest at Maruti plant last year, represents that generation. In his 20s, Gujjar organised a concall with analysts to put forth the workers' point of view and made headlines.

Return of the Red Flag

From its peak in the 1980s, trade unions have been on a decline in India. Trade union bodies across the board — from Citu to AITUC — have been seeing a steady decline over the years. It does not help that a large percentage of workers in Indian factories are foot-loose contract workers. Over 90% of the Indians are employed in the unorganised sector where the trade unions have been finding it difficult to make inroads. They have made many efforts to spread their network among white collar workers like BPO employees, but with little success. Expectedly, they are tapping into every possible opportunity they can get to grow their base. Their involvement in Maruti's labour unrest signals that.

I also read today that police suspect the hands of some Naxal affiliated organizations in inciting trouble. The pre-planned and methodical nature of the attack initiated this suspicion.

This took me back to a book on Maoists written by Sudeep Chakravarti a noted journalist on Maoist issues. The book 'Red Sun' talks about a systematic plan by Maoists to first infiltrate dissatisfied and poor sections of the urban society and then incite them for violence. Manual labours and factory contract workers were cited as prime targets. All this is mentioned in their master plans written and described in detail by their think tanks. Reading about the Maruti trouble, reminded me of that book and how eerily similar it looks.

If that is true then its quite alarming for Haryana!

Manufacturing cannot survive in India because of stringent, old labour laws. Indian public service is the biggest problem around every business in India. That is why doing business is very difficult in India.

I wrote in some other post that IT survived being a new technology. Now bad days are not far for IT companies. Labour department is now expanding its dead hands over IT industry by implementing 19th century law.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...unt-Indian-IT-sector/articleshow/15101454.cms

This is a retrograde step. This law belongs to the 19th century and does not take into account the ground realities of a globalised world," said industry veteran TV Mohandas Pai, a former member of Infosys' leadership team who was instrumental in getting the earlier exemption.

"Originally, the exemption was secured to stop harassment from the labour department and the inspector raj."

IT companies worry they will be made to comply with what they believe are complicated and unnecessary procedures, be exposed to 'inspector raj', and end up encouraging union activity in a sector that has been largely free of labour groupings.

Fate had a terrible end for HR manager Dev. He had resigned 6 months back but was persuaded back.

Deceased Maruti HR manager Awanish Kumar Dev had resigned 6 months back

KOLKATA: Destiny or foul play? As the devastated family of Awanish Kumar Dev grapples with the question, it appears that the unfortunate GM (HR) of Maruti Suzuki's Manesar plant had put in his papers six months ago because he had apprehended trouble, but was forced to stay on by the management of the automobile maker.

This startling revelation was made by Awanish's 45-year-old brother Avinash who told ET over phone from Delhi: "There was simmering tension at the Manesar plant for quite some time and Awanish had put in his papers. He was very stressed out and could have seen this coming. He was all set to join another organisation but had finally decided to give in to the persuasion of senior officials of the company."

Avinash broke down on the phone, sobbing uncontrollably. "Obviously, fate had this in store for him. We are now definite that the attack on my brother was pre-planned. It wouldn't have been possible otherwise to summon over 3,000 people in such a short time. Our 80-year-old father, Rameshwar Saha is demanding a CBI probe into the incident," Avinash said.

"We also suspect a strong political hand in this incident, but please do not ask me for names. As a family, we are now really afraid of what might follow," Avinash said.

He recounted how Awanish used to talk about the prevailing tension at the plant and how the older workers used to stay calm and do their work. "It was the younger generation, between 25 and 30 years, who were really aggressive and the ones who created all the problems," Avinash said.

"This was no accidental killing. The turn of events suggest that my brother was clearly the main target. Though the discussion with the labour union to reinstate the worker who had been suspended for beating up a supervisor was moving in a positive direction, the mob had become violent. All five or six gates were closed. The workers killed him, before pushing him into fire," Avinash alleged.

Owner of a pharmacy in Ranchi, an utterly devastated Avinash kept on asking: "Is this the price one pays for trying to maintain cordial industrial relations at the plant? Awanish was just an employee, not the owner of either the plant or the company. He was merely trying to carry out management instructions."

Maruti officials were extending all support to the family. "Since nearly 100 Maruti officials have been hospitalised, the company has not yet offered any compensation. And in any case, we are just too mentally disturbed now to even think about it," said Avinash.

Justice delayed is justice denied, so goes the old maxim. The concerned authorities must take stringent action in the matter at the earliest to facilitate ending of 'lock out' of the company and improvement in labour-management relations which have touched the lowest ebb at present.

[h=1][FONT=Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif]While doing away with the practice of hiring contract workers may be a good step, the decision to terminate 500 regular workers without the completion of the police inquiry may stir up more trouble.

Maruti Suzuki sacks 500 workers; start operations from Aug 21
[/h]In a move likely to evoke strong labour reactions, country’s leading car maker, Maruti Suzuki India on Thursday announced termination of services of 500 regular workers and resumption of normal operations from August 21 at its violence hit plant at Manesar, Haryana.
"We have issued termination notices to 500 regular workers. We plan to lift the lockout from August 21 and resume operations at the facility in phases,’’ Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) chairman, R.C. Bhargava told reporters here.
The company said termination notices have been issued to regular workers who were allegedly involve din the July 18 violent incidents which led to the death of a senior MSI executive, Ashwani Kumar and left nearly 100 others injured. Maruti Suzuki India had declared a lockout at the Manesar plant on July 21, stating the safety and well-being of its employees were paramount to the company.
The people short listed for termination and will not be taken back includes workers and persons arrested by police and who are likely to face criminal proceedings, and are also in our list, a statement by MSI said. Hinting at further action, the company said if in the course of enquiries or police investigations, it appears that more workers were involved in the violence, action will be taken against them as and when required.
Stating it was ending the process of employing contract labour, the company said it had started the process of directly hiring them. The schedule of recruitment has been communicated to all the existing contract workers through the contract agencies and recruitment would start from September 2, the statement added.
The Manesar unit is being presently guarded by the Haryana Police. MSI has created a special force of 100 security guards, including ex-servicemen, at the Manesar plant in addition to the existing security force, to enhance security.
Police has stated it would provide security at the plant and station a full battalion Rapid Action force comprising 500-600 policemen inside the facility. The plant, while on full operations before the violence, employed around 3,000 workers, of which around 1,600 were permanent employees. Besides, about 700 managerial people were also working at the plant. The Manesar plant, which has an annual capacity of 5.5 lakh units, rolls out the company's popular models Swift, entry level sedan DZiRE and SX4 along with compact car A-Star.
The Haryana government had formed a special investigation team (SIT) headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Ravinder Tomar to probe violence at Manesar plant. On August 1, the police had arrested 10 office bearers of the Maruti Suzuki Workers' Union, including its president Ram Meher and general secretary Sarabjit Singh, taking the total number of workers arrested to 114 in relation to the incident.
The company has been facing labour unrest for along time and last year it witnessed three incidents of unrest at Manesar plant due to which it had suffered a loss of around Rs. 2,500 crore for 83,000 units.
Personal Security Officers (PSOs) have been provided for the safety of managers, supervisors, and where necessary the workers. 3) Security arrangements have been made at the residences of the employees. ``We believe that these measures and the continuing efforts of the Haryana government and its police force to investigate, arrest and prosecute the criminals involved in the violence on July 18 will create a safe environment for work to resume,’’ the statement added.
