with the UPA government’s trust vote next week expected to be too close to call, jailed MPs have swung into action to be present for the crucial exercise and few of them got court permission on tuesday. the tainted MPs are also being wooed by parties to ensure they do not switch sides when the lok sabha meets for a crucial special session as rival parties try to stack up numbers at a time when every single vote will count.
these are bails that could bail out the UPA government. in what would come as a shot in the arm of the government bracing itself for the trust vote next week.
1. Surajbhan Singh: Patna HC on wednesday granted bail to Lok Jantantrik party MP Surajbhan Singh. (the Patna HC granted bail to Surajbhan while admitting his appeal against a lower court judgment which had sentenced him to life imprisonment for murdering a farmer. Opposing the bail plea, the deceased farmer's wife had said the Balia (Bihar) MP had in the past misused the bail and continued with his criminal activities).
2. Mohammed Shahabuddin: Patna HC also allowed Rashtriya Janata Dal MP Mohammed Shahabuddin to take their seats in the Lok Sabha on July 22. (Shahabuddin has been languishing in Siwan jail for years now. He is convicted in at least three criminal cases by trial courts and facing a life term for kidnapping a CPI-ML activist with the intention to murder).
3. Atiq Ahmed: On Monday, a lower court in Allahabad had allowed suspended Samajwadi Party MP Atiq Ahmed, also in jail, to participate in the trust vote. This takes the number of jailed MPs allowed to vote on July 22 to three.
4. Pappu Yadav: Another RJD MP from Bihar, Pappu Yadav, is serving life sentence in Delhi's Tihar Jail for the murder of former Purnea CPM MLA Ajit Sarkar. The court has not taken a decision yet but chances are that he too would be allowed to vote.
5. Afzal Ansari: Another MP serving time in jail is Independent Afzal Ansari from Ghazipur. Elder brother of don-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, Afzal too is a history-sheeter. It isn't clear which way he will vote.
