As I wrote earlier, the Graduate Program in US universities is by its format an integrated program. The admission requirements are identical for each program -Master's or Ph.D. All students take same courses to start with. In the beginning all students attend classes together for “basic requirement courses” in a graduate program of any university. The distinction comes after the basic requirements are fulfilled. Some students opt for Master’s degree and finish. Others continue to earn a Ph.D. which involves new and original research work. To be specific, for a Ph.D. degree here, you don’t need to have a formal Master’s degree. Once you receive Ph.D. degree, it is understood that you have met the requirements for a Master’s degree. However, some students do take a Master’s degree before continuing for Ph.D. The reason for this is simply a safety part. Just in case you can’t earn Ph.D. you can walk away with Masters.
These days the internet is bliss. Go on line and type the name of any university in, say, Google or Yahoo search. Then you go to its web site and the department you wish to know about. There you will get all needed information about the admission requirements, financial help etc. All schools need GRE and English Language test.
I hope it helps. Once again the program is an integrated program.
In United States top engineering schools are MIT, Cal Tech, Stanford, Berkeley, Georgia Tech, Universities of Michigan and Illinois, Cornell, Purdue, UT Austin, Wisconsin, Penn State, and the list goes on.
It will depend on the strength of your credentials to get admission. I am sure that one would need financial assistance along with admission because it is expensive here to bear the cost from your pocket, unless of course one’s family has some money in a Swiss bank etc. It is a little tough these days because of the financial downturn in US. BUT, don’t be discouraged; do well in GRE score and you will be fine.
