Jyotiji,
They say, the hand that rocks the cradle rules the world. I have not, so far, heard of any great person who had had a bad mother, though I do not claim to be knowing much about the great people of the world (In academic interest I would like to hear from the learned members, if they have). This world would be a far far better place to live if the quality of motherhood improves.
We know that all mothers are not equally motherly whereas many men have dominating motherly characters. Any woman who is a good wife may not necessarily be a good mother and vice versa. I believe that children of the following kind of women achieve the most in life:
i) that are humble by nature. Kise kalihari ke beta/beti nai achha naam kamaya ho isa mere sunan main nahi aya.
ii) that regard their child as a complete individual from the very beginning. This adds to the self esteem of the child.
iii) that have full faith in their child and love him/her unconditionally.
iv) that earmark at least a few minutes of their 24 hours for spending exclusively with the child. And exclusively means exclusively. It is not family time but child-mother (distinct from mother-child) time.
My wife and I have reasons to believe ourselves to be good parents. I, therefore, do not feel myself out of place to make these observations.
All our best wishes are with you, Jyotiji, Rituji and all young mothers here reading this post!
PS: BTW the best book I read on parenting is titled " How to Really Love Your Child" --Ross Campbell
