N-plant will affect health: Chautala

Fatehabad, December 6
Former Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala today alleged that the nuclear power plant was being set up in Kumharia in Fatehabad to harm the health and prosperity of local residents.
Talking to mediapersons at Daulatpur village in this district, Chautala maintained that no life or plantation would be possible within a radius of 5km of the proposed plant and people living in the vicinity would always run the risk of radiation.
“This government will not do anything for the benefit of Hisar, Sirsa and Fatehabad because for ‘advantageous’ projects, the Hooda government has only Rohtak, Jhajjar and Sonepat in mind,” Chautala alleged.
The government had already done much harm to these areas by taking away its irrigation waters. Earlier, addressing party workers, Chautala regretted that people of old Hisar district (Hisar, Bhiwani, Fatehabad and Sirsa) did not give him support in the manner that old Rohtak district (Rohtak, Jhajjar and Sonepat) lent to the Chief Minister. “Old Rohtak district gave 13 out of its 14 assembly seats to Hooda. Had the old Hisar district given even 12 out of its 21 seats to the INLD, we would have formed government in the state this time,” Chautala told his workers. He called upon his party men not to be disheartened but to strengthen the organisation. He claimed that power would automatically come their way once the Hooda government fell.
Hisar: Former Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala said here on Sunday day that his party would challenge the appointment of Chief Parliamentary Secretaries in the High Court.
Addressing mediapersons after a meeting of INLD workers, he said there was no provision for such appointments in the Constitution and these nine appointments had been made by the Chief Minister only to save his government.
He said the ‘merger’ of Haryana Janhit Congress (BK) legislators with the Congress was illegal. His party would initiate appropriate legal action in this regard.
Chautala alleged the state was reeling under acute shortage of irrigation water, power and agricultural inputs.
Development works in Haryana were at a standstill since the Congress assumed power in 2005. Law and order was deteriorating and corruption had peaked inder the Hooda regime. Regretting that “the people had handed over the reins of power to looters,” Chautala said his party would nevertheless play the role of Opposition in a constructive and responsible manner.

Currently we are having Coal/gas based power stations in our state. Now there is one proposal for N-Power station. The opposition party is raising fingures at this.

Renewable source should be explored but they are not yet feasible enough till date. The demand of power is more than supplied by Bhakhra etc.

What do you people think about these N-Stations? (France produces 77% of its power from nuclear stations)

Bhai, even I read the news.

One thing is that N-power plants should be in deserted land. Jama registaani dharti mein laganey chahiye... even I would say that places of Fatehabad, Hisar, Bhiwani ( all bordering with Rajasthan) are better places. If this current land meets this condition, I think no harm in having one or more N Power plants. Population se door ho to badhiya hai.....

Bhai agar itni buri Cheez hoti to Prakash Singh badal N-power plant Punjab ke liye maangney nahi jaate PM ke paas..... I guess it will be better for the state but only if max power produced goes to Haryana people.... Aisa naa ho ki Jharli ki tarz par 50% bijli dillli ko chali jaaye...

The N-plant will be a health hazard if Chautala is made supervisor of the plant. Ka-boooom!!!
Also his sons might steal radioactive spent fuel rods and throw them into CM Hooda's water tank.

france and other developed countries can use nuclear energy because there is a culture of safety and concern for human life there which is absent in india.
in india safety culture is missing. so a nuclear plant can b a big hazard. might b another chernobyl.

nuclear plants.

I dont think that nuclear plants are good for our environment. We are very careless people in the world and this type of things are not made for us. Instead we must try to understand nature and likwise we should shave the energy so that we may need less energy. All over world nuclear energy is accepted as a good source of energy, USA and european countries are phasing out of this type of energy for the cause of Environment. these countries are very eager to sell there old nuclear reactors to india becoz we are power hungary, but by doing this we are destroying our future generations. This Manmohan and Hooda-Chauala are doing RAJNITI they have nothing to do with our well being, we must understand this. This nuclear plants requires a lot of water which we donot have then what is the use of it, Do we need another Chernovel. no . no. no. no.????

Well by that logic, we shouldn't fly on airplanes either. I mean, I appreciate where you are coming from, but we need to develop the "culture of safety" rather than culture of inaction.

Pakistan is at the liberty of India for getting water. We release very less water for them because of our own needs. There is a huge scarcity of water in Pakistan and western India is at the brink of running dry in a decade or so. Glaciers are receding and fossil water are not renewable.

How ever I am not very sure about the "enormous" need of water for Nuclear power plants. If it is true that they need a great deal of water then I believe that such plants In north west india will have short lives.

Sangwan sahib......right spot on, we are careless people. However, Nuke power plants can't be operated in the typical Bharat style, especially in Haryana someone may decide to steal fuel rods for extra Bottle of Scotch. It is not beyond the realm of possibility, heck some Bharat Mata Ka Saput sold our currency plates to Pakistanis that led to explosion of fake currency in Bharat. Nuclear plants is not some child play there is constant monitoring of the whole plant and that too rigorous and meticulous. India's record in maintaining Nuke power plant safety is questionable at best. I learned few things while my work at San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant near San Diego Calif. Monitoring and Physical Verification was continuous and enforced with ruthless discipline. Alot of people got fired for minor slips, as our director used to say, remember chernobyl. The stress of maintaining nuke power plant every day can be very heavy when you are constantly reminded that one mishap can kill millions of people quickly before you can contain the disaster. I have seen videos of people who were affected with nuclear radiation it is so horrible they were seen begging to be shot so their misery and pain would end.

Instead we must try to understand nature and likwise we should shave the energy so that we may need less energy.
Not sure what to make of this, understanding nature will not produce more energy or pull so many people out of misery and poverty.

There are few contradictions in your thoughts. Europeans are not phasing out nuclear energy they are afraid of Chernobyl type of accident. French are actually replacing their old reactors with newer more efficient ones. Coal, Gas and Oil fired power plants can wreak havoc, due to the tools available now we are able to contain the fall out of conventional power plants. One thing about Nuke Energy is it is relatively cheap to produce but takes large amount of initial expense and immaculate maintenance.
This nuclear plants requires a lot of water which we donot have then what is the use of it, Do we need another Chernovel. no . no. no. no.????
I agree the location of Nuke Power Plant in Haryana does not make any sense. They should be close to huge water source where enormous amount of water is available at very short time to contain the fall out from any mishap. Our coastal regions are more suited for nuke power plants than states like Rajasthan, Haryana where there is no water for human consumption forget about anything else.

Its easy to approve a nuclear plant but to set up a nuclear plant is never easy. It takes a proper planning and process to design, engineer, procure and construct a nuclear plant. Considering the love of govt. to local contractors and the corruption in system, the experts contractors and constructors will keep themselves away from this subtle technology atleast for near future in India. Safety is a major issue here. And the capability and skills of indian people to run a nuclear reactor can be doubted.

Bhai India is already operating 17 nuclear power plants with utmost safety and precaution. There has never been any adverse incidents in these plants so far. 6 other Nuclear plants are already under construction.

The thread is about the unintellectual statement made my Chautala. Politicians always make stupid statements and the sad part is that the majority of people buy these arguments. That is the reason that Indian public and politicians are stuck with trivial issues and ignore the most important issues. BJP sells Ram Mandir, Mulayam is against English and Computers, Mayawati is obsessed with making dalit statues, Shiv Sena's fantasy is marathi "manoos" and to keep attacking Sachin and Bacchans. Such probs prevail in most states in India.

Karan Sir I appreciate your insight about the issue. Indians really need to be more informed about the facts rather thank indulging in making hollow statements.

I don't mean any offense to anyone but it is sad to see such casual misinformed statements.

If people are scared of Chernobyl(which never happened in India) then with that logic we shall ground all the commercial and fighter airplanes, US and Russia should have stopped human space missions a long time back, all the areas which are under seismic fault lines should be deserted forever, all the indian trains and the railway department should be scraped.... and it is just a never ending list.

we may not be able to compare space missions and fighter aircarft projects with the Chernobyl. No spacecarft or aircarft can do kinda of destuction caused by mishap in any nuclear plant. I didn't hear what Chautala said. I am sure he may not have thought much about it and may have tried to create it a political issue.
We are trying to explain that Haryana's geographical location in terms of availability of land and water resources may not suite the requirement of N-plant.
Majority of big investments in India happened on the basis of some political compulsions. Till today I never understood the logic of having 3 refineries Mathura, Panipat and Bhatinda in the radius of 200 km.

Spot on Anil. Even i believe the same..Placing nuke plants on remote areas would not only help in preventing people from risk of radiation but also fertile land can be kept for agricultural purposes.

And there should be some more electrical supply to the states who are permitting those nuke plants set up on their land which i believe a very risky job.

India's record in maintaining Nuke power plant safety is questionable at best.

Yes it is questionable..As of 25 years now, there is no justice to Bhopal gas tragedy victims as yet..That plant in Bhopal is still there..as of government decision, the plant is still on freeze and not been demolished yet..Those poisonous material still might be damaging the vicinity..God Helps.

Not sure about the coastal regions would be better place to set up..Question arises are..How would you ensure that marine life is safe from radioactive material waste.Would the government be able to bear the desalination cost.

My reasoning for near coastal water is in case accident happens and we need huge amount of water only ocean can provide that kind of water at very high rate of flow to douse any fire and contain radiation. I was actually hinting at the chernobyl when first responders went in they used fire fighter hoses to douse the flames and contain heat but temprature was so high water actually became fuel. being close to ocean you can open flood gates to completely deluge the plant.
Anyways these are just my thoughts. Rest depends on Bharat Gov't.

Yudhvir
I agree it doesn't make any sense to have three refineries in such close proximity espeically Bhatinda and panipat. Too close to Pesky Border with piglets called pakis. These two refineries are within striking range of their planes, similar is the case of Reliance in Gujrat but that's a different discussion.

Karan sir, you may be right in your thoughts. But look at other aspect of it, for power generation we are too much dependent on coal. and our need of energy is huge. In western countries nuclear power plant are located in cities. so why we should wary that much.
After chernoyl accident, design parameters of nuclear power plant have been changed completely. Chernoyl reactor had only single containment and many others faults were also there(you know better than me as you have worked in a nuclear plant). Now every power plant is designed keeping safety in mind. During operation, It is closely watched by national and international agencies.

Nothing comes free, there is always a negative side of everything.

Respected Sir
In India,17 nuclear power plants are operating across the country with high degree of safety. There is no single incident comes in picture of stealing fuel rods or anything. Plants are run by highly educated people from reputed institutes of country. I feel they will not steal fuel rod for a bottle of scotch.Still at some wrongs persons are always there, for that Every plant under CISF security.

Is anybody in Chautla's family know the difference between fusion and fission . It looks quite strange that how come these people draw conclusions.
I am sure even our CM doesn't know the difference.. though he may be thinking to supply heavy water to Rohtak as he may be thinking that it'll make rohtak ppl more DABANG

Sri Chautala is a genious personality.

Ex-Deputy PM great-grandsons , grandsons of many times Ex-CM & leader of opposition in Haryana Assembly

Son of boxing federation , self cricket promoter.

Don't U think they(chautala's new generation)
must have got good education?

Hint: Bishop Cotton School Shimla Estd. 1859.
& : DPS R K Puram Delhi.

Moreover : Fusion live example in politics is alinging
his 31 + 1 MLAs.

May be Present CM better knows what is fission!
Or atleast a good teacher who taught Kuldeep Bishnoi.
