Poor performance in agriculture sector has pushed down Haryana’s economic growth to 9.3 % in 2007-08 from a robust 14.2 %in 2006-07. Meanwhile, the state has projected its gross state domestic product at current prices to jump to Rs 2,12,910 crore in 2009-10. The agrarian economy has managed to achieve 9.3% GSDP rate in real terms in 2007-08, which was mainly fuelled by sectors like trade, communication, construction, transport, manufacturing, electricity and real estate etc, according to Haryana’s Economic Survey 2008-09. In 2006-07, it was the outstanding performance of the farm sector, part of the primary sector, that helped the state to achieve GSDP to grow by a double digit of 14.2 %. But now the growth in primary sector has come down to one per cent in 2007-08, further adversely impacting the overall growth of GSDP. The sectoral analysis further revealed that GSDP at constant prices from primary sector, which comprises agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishing, mining, increased from Rs 21,127.82 crore in 2006-07 to Rs 21,344.82 crore in 2007-08, showing a marginal increase of one %against 13.9 %growth in 2006-07. Although state achieved good growth in crops like rice, wheat, bajra and cotton at 7.2, 1.8, 13.7 and 4.4 %respectively in 2007-08 but the output of other crops such as oilseeds, sugarcane, and gram dipped by 23.2, 8.2 and 40 %respectively. “As a consequence of decreased production, the farm sector grew by just 0.9 %in 2007-08,” the report said . The impact of contraction in growth of farm sector on GSDP could be substantiated by the fact that about two third of state’s population still depends on agriculture for their livelihood.</I></B>
