This is amazing.... This is what we call "Never Say Die" And only a JAT can do that.

-------------------------------------
WHAT WILL you call him? The second ’Haryana Hurricane’ after Kapil Dev Nikhanj, or ’Cyclone of India’? Akhil Kumar can be referred by both names as this Indian pugilist beat the 2007 world champion, Sergey Vodopyanov of Russia and stormed into the quarter final of the 54kg bantamweight category of the boxing competition at the Beijing Olympics – 2008 on Friday (August 15).

On the 61nd Independence Day of India, it is a great gift to country from her brave son. Akhil Kumar, a Jat from Haryana showed his prowess while knocking down his opponent inside the boxing ring and snatched the opportunity from the world champion to enter into the quarter final of the Beijing Olympics – 2008. Before qualifying for the quarterfinal also, Akhil showed the excellence of his knocking style in the last two matches. Today, he won last 16 bout to enter the quarter-finals of the bantamweight (54kg) category.

Dramatically, Haryana is the only state among the 27 states of India, that created the record of sending five boxers at a time in the Beijing Olympics-2008. Now, the Jat tigers are showing their muscle inside the Olympic ring.
Though he heard about it, but could not even manage time to see the gold medal with Bindra because of relentless practice through these days that ultimately resulted into victory. But, Akhil is optimistic enough to have a same pride around his neck in this Olympics. As earlier mentioned also, Indian boxers are performing better than any other event in the Beijing Olympic – 2008. The reason behind the same is nothing but the spirit to win anyhow.

Categorically, boxing is regarded as the most popular event in the Olympic where India is gradually showing the dexterity through record-breaking results. Apart from Akhil Kumar, Jitender Kumar also stormed into the pre-quarter finals of the Beijing Olympics on August 12 defeating his Turkish counterpart, Ulas Furkan Memis, within three rounds. Even Jitender also made his first debut in the Olympic with a lead of 12-3 result against the Turkish opponent. Leaving this trio, there are also Dinesh Kumar and Vijendar Singh who are also in the list of hopes

are bhai dalal woh world champion 2007 ka tha u 2008 se,mere bhai akhil medal jete ga jab taali peetiyo, ibe bahut jaldi se

Thumbs Up !

No offense to what you say, but it is very hard even to participate in such a gala sports fest. And here we are talking about 5 JAT guys fighting it out there with fiercest of the opponents. No matter what the outcome is, we will have to give all the accolades to our chaps for putting up a brilliant show of stamina and courage.

And regarding, netting another medal or two in the kitty, we have struck Gold after 112 years in an individual event. Lets be happy with this at this point of time. Anything more would be an icing on the cake. But, one thing is for sure, it is the sport that wins in the end. :)

just to add on what was said above ,Akhil's determination is quite eveident when he says

"how long I could have it ..at max I could see it , touch but then would have to give it back ...Iwant one of my own...."..:rock

thats when he was asked whether he saw Bindra's gold medal... thats what the passion for the game is all about..hope he gets one of his own .. :)

Read below the determination of Akhil. No doubt that our Jat bahi is out in ring on a mission. He has one and single objectives Gold. Atleast he has the guts to speak, self inspire and refuses to accept defeat.
He has killer instict to win.

Thanks

Rampaging Akhil lifts gloom
Outboxes world champion in a thriller

Beijing, August 15
Boxer Akhil Kumar today scored a dramatic come-from-behind victory against Russian world champion Sergey Vodopyanov at the Olympic Games here, lifting the gloom brought about by the end of India's campaign in tennis and virtual end of further medal hopes in shooting.

Doing the unthinkable, 27-year-old Akhil from Haryana stunned Vodopyanov in an edge-of-the-seat bout to put himself just one win away from an Olympic medal here tonight in a perfect Independence Day gift to India at the Games.

Trailing 2-6 at one stage, a gritty Akhil, who had said prior to today's match that he is inspired by the gold-winning feat of shooter Abhinav Bindra, drew parity in the dying seconds and won on points to reach the quarterfinal of the 54kg category at the Workers' Gymnasium.

The scores were tied at 9-9 at the end of the four-round bout but the five-member declared Akhil the winner on points. The winner on points is decided by the jury by considering the accepted scores and deleting the highest and lowest scores of the two boxers.

An elated Akhil, who plays his next match on Sunday, insisted he is not ready to settle for anything less than the gold even though he would be assured of a medal if he wins his quarterfinal bout on Sunday.

The Russian world champion grabbed early initiative as he raced to a 6-2 lead midway through the third round.

To make it even more difficult for the Indian, the Russian used both the orthodox and southpaw stance but it did not unsettle Akhil who went on the offensive.

Making a remarkable fightback, Akhil prevailed in the third round to reduce the gap (7-8) and then in the final round, unleashed a couple of punches bang on target on the Russian to drew parity at 9-9.

The defeat brought the shattered Russian to tears as he clutched his head in disbelief and refused to shake hands with Akhil after the bout.

"It was not easy, for he is the world champion but once I levelled the score, I knew I cannot lose," said Akhil, bathed in sweat. It's not possible to assure you of the gold but I can tell you that I'm here to win only gold," said the boxer brimming with confidence and determination.

"I know things would not be easier, in fact it would get even more difficult from now onwards. But I'm here to do my job and return with the gold. If luck decides the outcome, I may return with the bronze. But if confidence is the determining factor, gold is mine," he thundered.

Coach G.S. Sandhu was effusive in praise for his ward and said, "Only Akhil can do that. He was all along confident and he proved that it was not mere wishful thinking on his part. We are so proud of him.”— PTI

world class

i got to see the bouts
truely world class, it is so satisfying to see such a performance.
if sports is promoted in haryana alone, it can produce world champions in every sport (the potential is there)
they should keep the focus.
