one more reason to support khap panchayat, that why we jats leave three gotras while doing marriage..

Endogamy made Indians ‘vulnerable’ to genetic diseases

Hyderabad, October 1
The age-old practice of marrying within the same caste or community has made Indians more vulnerable to genetic diseases.
The rampant inbreeding has led to genetic mutations, thus explaining why certain diseases are concentrated only in a particular pocket of population in the country.
A joint research by premier Indian and American institutions has found that the caste system existed thousands of years before the colonial rulers entered the country.
Tracing the genetic history and diversity of the Indian population, the study came up with findings that have important medical implications.
Many modern groups of people in India have descended from a small number of people. The scientists describe this as “founder event”- a rampant Indian practice of marrying within small group of people.
“This high endogamy within the country, a practice that dates back to several thousand years, makes these pockets genetically unique. Because of this, there may be mutation in the gene that leads to various diseases,” senior scientist with Hyderabad-based Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) and a lead author of the study Kumarasamy Thangaraj said.
Claimed to be the largest-ever genome-scale analysis of diverse Indian groups, the research was jointly conducted by scientists from the CCMB, Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT, USA.
The recessive hereditary diseases, the single gene disorders that occur when person carries two abnormal or malfunctioning copies of a disease causing gene, are seen among Indians who have descended from a small group of founder individuals.
Thallasaemia is one such example wherein a couple carrying one
abnormal and normal gene each passes on the abnormal ones to the child.
The researchers say there is a certain genetic mutation specific to the Indian sub-continent, which is linked to the cardiac condition. “The study gives us an understanding why the incidence of cardiac disease is different in the Indian sub-continent from the rest of the world,” Thangaraj said.
He said there were similar diseases that could be understood genetically.
Similar founder events seen in other groups, such as Finns and Ashkenazi Jews are well known to increase the incidence of recessive genetic diseases. The new study predicts that the same will be true for many groups in India. “Further studies of these groups should lead to the rapid discovery of genes that cause devastating diseases, and will help in the clinical care of individuals and their families who are at risk,” said the study’s co-author David Reich, an associate professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School. As part of the study, the research team analysed more than 500,000 genetic markers across the genomes of 132 individuals from 25 diverse groups, representing 13 states, all six language families, traditionally “upper” and “lower” castes, and tribal groups. The findings, published in the journal “Nature”, showed that India’s caste system is not a relic of colonialism but had existed for thousands of years.

I agree with you

But one thing I feel wrong about Sarvkhap Panchayat is , If a couple is already married and having an issue , How they can force them to break the relation, this is not fair. They should not use force ,they should do counselling and they should organise seminars at village level and mohalla level to propagate the knowlege.

People are not knowing these facts which you mentioned , they only think this a social implication.
some workout is required to teach the people about the knowledge.

Good point raised Sir,
this is called Inbreeding Depression.
It stagnates our gene pool leaving less room for possible genetic recombinations, thus increasing the frequency of deleterious genes. One way to overcome this is by outbreeding enhancement, that is, by marrying outside ones community. This results in offspring who is genetically more superior to his parents by combination of virtues of both the parents.

so does this means that marring out of religion will provide better variation of genes than just out of community or avoiding some gotras??

just curious about it..

although i have no data to support my view in case of humans Sir, but yes i would like to answer in an affirmative !
the resulting union may bring in new genes, absent from both the families which of course WILL lead to new genetic recombination, enriching the existing gene pool, and obviously the offspring will be far superior to his parents (hybrid vigor)

May be it will lead to superior generation but will the couple be allowed to do so??
They won't be alive if they do so :)..
And that's coz of the so called "HONOUR KILLINGS".
Dusre dharam me koe shadi kar lega to wo bhi MAAR hi diya jayega.. :)

aap to itni dreaded baat keh k bhi smile karte ho !!!

yeh genetic issue to kafi known n common fact hai...maybe not in villages but in cities atleast....

but the way khap panchayats deal with it is wrong.....thr r honour killings in the name of gotras n all....n tht time nobody is thinkin abt the genes n diseases.....they r thinkin abt their own honour....ki humari izzat mitti mein mila di.....

so i agree wit ppl above...tht more awareness needs to b created in villages n all regarding this...so tht ppl dun voluntarily get into it...rather than kids getting married and then being killed by their family/relatives.....like the news in today's TOI...tht a dagar girl was killed coz she married a saini guy.....thts a shame !!

Bhai deepak ur statement looks more like a threat than information.. and ur smile at the ends looks like u r taking it so casually... :)

anyway, i dint hear of any honour killings in Rajasthan.. so i still have a chance to think for a super kid.. :D

I don't know about genes but one thing is sure inter religion marriages have potential to bring back communal riots of 1947.

Bhai Narender, I'm smiling at the fate of inter-religion marriage and I'm strongly against Honour killings. Aur bhai rajsthan me Khap panchayats ka itna hold nahi hai jitna haryana me hai.

I know now someone wuld jump in and say tha khaps are not involved. To ek dusre thread me (isi type ka thread h bhai wo) ek bhai ne ye kaha tha ki KHAP Panchayats me hmare hi ghar-privar wale (kaka-tau) jate hai. Aur ye HONOUR KILLINGS gharwale hi karte hai. Agar wo nahi marenge to SAMAJ wale kya kahenge, yahi soch kar wo maar dete hai. Ab aap batao Khap me bhi hmare hi ghar-privar wale hote hai aur marne wale bhi wahi hai.. So are KHAPS involved or not? Leave it aside, a different topic all together..

rahi mere muskurane ki baat to bhai main isiliye muskura raha tha ki inter-religion marriage to ek bahut bada issue hai.. Jaat agar muslim se shadi kar lega to mere khyaal se Samaj kya khega ye soch kar ghar wale Un dono ko bhi MAAR denge. Inter-caste pe hi bawaal khda ho jata hai bhai to inter-religion to bahut bda issue ban jayega. So it (inter-religion marriage)doesn't seem to be happening at all in Haryana at least. Jis kaam ka end result pahle hi pta ho to sivay muskurane ke aur kiya hi kya ja sakta hai :)

PS : Don't again take me wrong that I'm in favour of gotra marriage. They are wrong and shuld never happen. But Don't Kill people at least!!

PS2 : Bhai Narender teri shkal to KAMAAL KHAN (Romeo) te mile se :D Yaad hoga "Jo bole so Nihaal" aala !....jus kiddin :p

i wont take it in wrong way bro...
i can understand very well what is happening and wht should happen...
i do agree with you... any statement which is supported by facts is always respected and taken seriously...
cheers...

Hybrid not good in All cases!!!

Hi,
This is just permutation and combination that drive the outcome of the genetic mixing. It is not that marrying different pool of genome will lead to betterment. it can be worse too.But the worse one would be omitted by nature using theory of fittest. So don't take decision based on this knowledge in case you don't want to be test case. And results may not be visible just in a single generation. So these are just theories and they are used to find out the problems and reverse of these wont remove these problems.

Sir,
It is a well known fact that effect that results from mating between members of genetically distinct subpopulations are generally good (except for rare cases in plants and animals). It is known to reduce the occurrence of many diseases viz., thallesemia, haemophilia, colour blindness etc. Besides, there are research papers which states that numerous other highly heritable traits, both physical as well as psychological, have also undergone large secular changes along with IQ, which is consistent with the occurrence of broad-based genetic change like heterosis (in simple terms heterosis means a phenomenon resulting from mating of genetically distinct subpopulations in which offspring display greater vigor, size, resistance, etc. than the parents).

Rama u r true in what you mentioned in ur post. But ground reality is different. People still condemn inter-religion marriages. Koi muslim agar kisi hindu se shadi karta hai to wo log use Kaafir kah kar maar dete hai. Hindu muslim se karta hai to Honour killing se. it may take ages for this difference to wipe out.:) Thinking needs to change a lot else this will remain a theoretical concept only in India!!
