I want to share an incident which happened with me and my friend last night which really came as a shock to me that our own people are not ready to accept us as a part of this educated society.

Last night i went out with my jat friends for a movie in PVR,Vikaspuri,Delhi. All educated and well sttled in life.Let me give a bit of description of the type of group i was with.

I myself a post-graduate in law.
One of my friend youngest ever to clear NET in law and a lecturer in law.
Another friend final yr MBBS student from PGIMS,Rohtak.
A friend preparing for civil services who cleared the prelims last year.
A final year law student from DU.

AND WE ALL ARE JATS.

Let me come to the incident. Before entering into the theatre we took cone icecreams and stood in side of the entrance of the theatre. There we saw that the main security officer was aJAT himself(we saw his name badge on his chest). We were already talking in HARYANAVI with each other(wich we usually do irrespective of the crowd we are surrounded by). When our turn came for entering ,the securitymen started checking us.We sharing the same culture with that security officer ,one of my friend greeted him by saying ''BHAISAAB RAAM RAAM........AUR K HAAL SE?''.

Inspite of replying back this guy felt offended that 5 young desi jat boyz have come to see the muvi. This is where he showed how much respect and what he feels abt the people who speaks the same language like him.He wasnt checking anybody's wallet. But when our turn came he asked us to show our wallets.Wen my turn came i denied to shom him my wallet as its something personal.I would have not objected to this .........but in the whole queue of about 40 ppl he only asked us to show the wallet. This was the time to show to that person that we jat boys not only speak haryanvi but we represent the present day JAT........modern and educated.Few words in english were enough to make him understand about our standards.I showed him my bar council i-card and later he realised his mistake.

But i wanna put a question 2day.There are so many threads in the website regarding the upliftment of the community and the progress we are making. But few words of english had more strength than our mother tongue.I would have not brought this incident to notice and even would have never taken this seriously. But the thing wich hurted me was that our own people are nt ready to accept us as the way we are.To prove to them that we are way forward than others in everyhting we have take help of some english words.

Our own people take us as uneducated and GAWAR ..........if we speak our jat language. This is a serious issues for the community. Why we cant b our ownself?Take any other community........punjabi group will never hasitate to speak in punjabi without being concerned abt the surrounding. You people might have seen bhajji and yuvraj speaking in punjabi after post match sessions and interviews but have any of you ever seen sehwag or nehra speaking in haryanvi on TV.

The real progress is possible when we will show faith in what we are.We are born best

My dear Sumit...one isolated incident must not make you form opinions about us all.its bad that the person behaved badly with you people inspite of being from same ferternity but then this world is like that.Koe baat na...harek halaat se seekhte chalo aur khudd wei gallati matt karo......Cheers!

It should make your resolve further strong...legpullers and negative people should never dampen your spirits.

yes, our's is a harsh language..

Yes it is,

Ppls took our language, as a molad one...

2 years back, when i was doing job in bhopal, one my my female collegue, complained to HR simply...because to "tu" word..as if i'm being harsh to her....

"tu kaal aayi nahi, ke baat"..and she felt abusive, thereafter i never used haryanvi in my office again..

thanks god my HR executive friend, herself was from punjab, and told her girl that , thier language seems to be harsh..but they aren't....

Our's isn't respectable language, i've seen ppls complaining..

This is quite common, in delhi, in DTC buses, where driver n conductor uses words, like..

"agge ne mar le ne, kyun darwajje pe khadya sai , kite mar-maragya te"
"khulle pise de, khulle nai sai, te bus me mat chadya kar".."khulle kit te lyayu, khulle nahi le ke aa sakta".."ib te de dyun su, agge te khulle le ke aiyye, mahi te bus me nahi chhadan dyunga"

Though they aren't harsh from heart, but it appears to others as if, we are ....

Can't help it.....:(...

Dear Sumit, As Dev sir said it might be a rare incident. I have came across many situations but all are positive ones, Specially at Delhi airport, When Delhi Police used to be in charge of Immigration. It is not like they did any favor to me or something like that, But I felt pleasunt in talking to them in Hariyanvi, They felt same at their end.

You can not draw inference of community’s behavior from an isolated incident. If you look back at the incident you described above then it was almost compulsive for that security guard to check you guys thoroughly which otherwise is also his discretion.
  • You were there in a group
  • All of you were speaking the same language
  • The body language at that time might have prompted the security guard to go ahead with the search
  • The tone of the language also matters
  • One of you might have initially resisted for the formal search.

In the last but not the least, you should not take this incident to the heart because that guard was doing his duty.

Bhai Sumit ! He is a chokidaar because thats what he deserves. He gave u a good example where he actually stands.

Theres a good chace he will get badly beaten up by his own people some day (u, me or anyone else) that day he will realise that he should atleast respect Jats, who are his own people.

but I must say our people generally look after and respect each other

Hi Sumit,

AS rightly pointed out , this might be one of the exceptions.

but the more valid point i would like to come out of the context you mentioned is whether our way of talking!

You might tend to disagree but i dont think that some of the words we use are right and specifically on platforms such as Jatland. I have seen the worse of languages used here.
I have no damn objections of the same language used between you and your friends , but i highly object to the use of same language to a person one 1) does not know. 2) just acquanitances 3) anything less than a friend
on the virtual world.

This created lots of rifts as i myself have noticed over my stay here and on the virtual world.
But people have their own ways !

Bottom Line: We can surely use the language between our well knowns but i refrain from using it arbitrarily anywhere where it can potentially cause heart burns!

Dear Sumit,

You have raised a very valid point. What you have raised is not only true but also widely prevalent in our community. There are various facets pertaining to this issue out of which three of them are briefly as follows:

1. Self respect among Jats as a community and as individuals: We Jats are as much capable if not more, in achieving the best of results in all our endeavours as compared to the other communities. We need to give due respect to the accomplishments of fellow Jats in as much the same way we applaud the efforts of achievers from other communities. This will build and reinforce that feeling of faith in oneself and in one's community which to a great extent is missing today. In today's scenario, we feel elated on coming across any Jat bhai clearing the Civil Services which to a large extent is still a rarity. No doubt we need to be happy with this fact and more community youngsters should follow in the footsteps of the achievers. The sooner we are able to have this realisation that we as members of a progressive community are capable of scaling heights, there would be no mountain too high to scale for us and we will regain our lost faith in ourselves as a community. We need to be cohesive, well knit and forward looking progressive community like the Jews or the Scots.

2. As far as language is concerned, again no doubt we have a comparatively ancient spoken language (unfortunate that we don't have a script). Its high time, we need to adapt ourselves and instead of discarding our language in favour of Hindi or English, need to sweeten up our language bit by bit (we cannot expect drastic changes overnight) at least the way we speak.... a little more pleasant sounding (with due acknowledgement and respect to the other person). (A recent example of how we speak: the other day this young lad approached this HR Manager of a company through someone's reference. HR Manager asked this boy, What have you done in terms of your qualifications? Boy: BA Karee hue hae. CV mein likha hua hae. HR Manager: Have you worked in the Retail line? Boy: Store? wahe na akke store mein kaam kiya ke nahi?? HR Manager: Are you open to relocation? Boy: Ek bey, babu teh boojh ke bataun su? Par manne, yah post nahi ---- post chahiye. HR Manager: I will refer you to another reputed organisation where you might be offered a better post. I will give you the contact number of the person concerned. Boy: Eenh mein toh selection kar le, unheke baare mein baad mein bataunga. Though the HR Manager was considerate of the person who had referred the boy, the boy though unintentionally was sounding very rude.) This again is a one odd example I came across and cannot be generalised for the entire community. Having said that, it cannot also be underemphasised that we need to change according to the times - if Punjabi (as spoken in Punjab) is said to be a sweet language, why can't Haryanvi be. I am sure over the ages, languages also evolve and change. Going further, why cannot we incorporate modern musical instruments in raginis and make them sound more contemporary? What is happening now is that because of Raginis sounding the same way as they must have sounded say around a 100 years back and the other popular music having moved on, the youth have lost interest in them. Instead of killing the folk music including raginis, we need to adapt it to the current times so that we are successfully able to pass on our heritage to our future generations, though with some adaptations/modifications.

3. Though we don't need to prove any point to any other community, we must realise that we are the brand ambassadors for our community in the world outside. The onus hence lies on us to make other communities understand us or have a relook at us as a progressive and equally if not a more cultured community. Let other communities sit up and take notice of us a community which is not only progressive, well cultured, closely knit but also which produces achievers in all fields possible.

Lets have faith in ourselves and our capabilities..........

nice viwes !!!

Nice views bro...

Let's start it from our JL itself first, for this move...

Chhora Thik Kah Sai...pr Chhore Housla Na Chhodna

SUMIT… Thik Kah Rya sai………….. ya Nasl ar Iska complex jab tak na likadai..jab tak really successful log isko openly use karma shru nhi karenge… wo chahe Sports k Virender Sahvag ho ya Nehra..DLF wale ya INDIA BULLS wale Gahlots ….. innse to acchhi Mallika Sahrawat hai…she answered on the question in France…”what was your family reaction on your red carpet welcome in Cannes film festival”……she answered…” Meri Nani Ka phone aaya tha…she said..CHHORI TANNAI TO CHALLA KR DIYA” then she explained the meaning in English to the reporter.
Long back when I personally noticed similar kind of complexity among Jat specially in well read ones... I seriously thought what I can do for them through my own medium….at that time I was very busy in to making serials in Mumbai for diffrant channels… I was delivering 40 episodes in a month as producer and director, but after thinking and thinking I came to the point that Music can be a best way for this purpose and in a week I conceive a music album. That was first Haryanavi Pop Album ”GIT PIT GIT PIT” in 1997… at the time when nobody even dreamed about blending Haryanvi & English Rap together. I spend huge amount in the making best of talent form Mumbai was involved in making of Music and Singing. On the release function of this album at RAJ BHAWAN Haryana in 1998. (Hon’ble Governor of Haryana released the album) One of Jat friend, who was a PHD scholar at that time specially thanks to me for making a classy design for the cover of the album..He said…yaar music to badhiya sai e..pr iska cover dekh kai pahli baar hoga k..koi pdha likha manas aa gya hostel k room mai to Haryanavi cassette lakoni (hide) na karni padegi. Kyonki jo aur milti hai unka look itna sheddy look hota hai ki ijjat bachavan nai chuuppa dyu sai kde wo sochai kisda anpadh gawar manas sai……….

The above points are correctly stated, it might have been that he found something strange amongst you and we shouldnt feel offended just because he did his job and scanned us. Instead of complaining, we should be thankful that atleast for once Delhi Police did their job and all thanks to you, u made Delhi Police work:p

However on a serious note, we see a lot of movies coming now a days hitting radical islam, all movies say that muslims in India are targetted just because they are muslims and a few muslims are terrorists, see Aamir[\b] to get a sense of what am speaking but how many of us actually agree of that? Isn't it just a thought that has been prevailed in society that muslims are made victims because all terrorists are muslims. Hence, please do not circulate this thought that all uneducated are not jats but all jats are uneducated

Also, look at the basic reason as to why Jats are looked upon in this manner? It is just because general perception is such and it is rightly so. How many Jat leaders do you see speaking haryanavi? Did any Jat CM of Haryana/UP/Rajasthan spoke in his dialect at state or national platform? Is there any written material that students are exposed to in our own states of this dialect? I have a lot such questions but wouldn't wish to share them because i am sure answers would be few

Sumit, neither did your face read you 5 were Jats and nor does only jats speak haryanavi in north India, hence making this issue limited to ourselves would be completely wrong.

Another important learning(personal), especially for those who like to influence police with their profession(Specially Police itself, lawyers and media) Education and profession does not certify your honetsy;

Those who bombed on 9/11 were also pilots and educated people
One of those who was after the parliament attack was a DU professor
Bin Laden earned a degree in civil engineering in 1979, a degree in public administration in 1981

Sumit, Incidences like this sometimes realy hit our status and force us actually to think bout the section of community we belong to (JATS)
U belong to LAW,u might know most of the judges spl.in UP/Rajasthan/Haryans have been JATS...But most of us dont know that.
Education does help a person stand well in a society but as VIkas wrote above just because u r educated does not mean that u r a good citizen or human being.
I would say be it Binladen or the pilots reponsible for 9/11 were so successfuly able to do the brutal crime coz they ver good in knowledge n education...
Also i understand u felt bad that time coz the gaurd was a Jat,however lets take it in a positive note that atleast he bieing a jat did his work properly without being bais to his own people.
Where are we left behind....Are we not dealing in each n every sector
professionally.Be it IT,Mediciene,Law,Science,Spiritualism Etc Etc ????? Yes We Are.
Its not at all imp to prove all the time that WE also carry good sences and we are as good mannered as everyone else. I feel proud to be a JAT as the blood in me has its own unremarkable history. Its somewhere n something not just bout our people but the kind of IMAGE we Jats have.
One of cousins who is a female once stated " I m not going to marry a Jat boy,Kitni bhi acchi position par ho Ganwaar hi rehte hain"she is herself very well eduacted n works as a manager in a company.
Reason i mentioned this example is:If we dont want to get this little still affective experiences, its only US who need to change this Image of ourselves..... To make someone (be it ur own people or the rest of them) Its only we who can make them understand that things are different from what they percieve.

Very true.

RE: I Don't Think Any Wrong Had been Done!

Dear Members,

With the current security situation around the world, I don't think any thing wrong had been done, if the security man asked for a search. No one, least be it the future beholders of law get offended by that.

Some thing may be worth considering:

1. Does our appearance itself is the certificate of our education?
2. There are millions of people who speak Haryanvi Language around the world, are they all educated?
3. Is being educated is a guarantee that they will not break the law or may not be part of the group that might endanger the security of general public?

Apart from that, one must understand the training these security men are given? Usually, any one who wants to sneak in, through the security is likely to act very friendly to the security person. By, the young group of people trying to be friendly with the security man may have given rise to his suspicion. Further, on an average most terrorists are younger in age rather than older. So, there is enough circumstantial evidence for the Security Man to be suspicious about the group.

I think in the Security Man should be commended for being alert. Probably it was his Jat character that kept him alert.

I am so disappointed, when some one talks about this security man being beaten by people for doing his duty.

Regarding, education! I don't think having a degree from a college or university is enough to be educated. It is how much of that education we implement in our life that matters. It is purely because of this reason older people used to differentiate beaten " Padha Hua and Guna Hua". It is more important to be Guna Hua than Padha Hua.

I had attended a party after one attorney won the Bar Election in 1998. All the guests were attorneys with various years of experience. After the party was over, I found plenty of them ( I would say majority of them) lying drunk all over the places (two were in the drainage to be precise). This may be an isolated incident, but that did gave me a food for thought, " Is this the quality of people we have to protect the law and help people to get Justice?"

Think about the incident, and you will be proud of this security man, and be proud of him being a JAT. Again read the quotation at the bottom about judging the person not by what he does, but how he does that? That is why we have had incompetent Kings, and competent Security Man/ Janitor for that matter.

Perception: "Pot half filled and Half Empty?"

I agree with you.
mujhe lagta hai ki in 5 logon ko security officer ki position ka khayal karna chahiye thaa and uski izzat karni chahiye thee.

Just as I was about to write on this...I read Tavathia Sir's post and noticed he thinks the same way I do on this matter. With this post, I am just repeating his reply.

Language is an important part of communication.

Broadly there are two types of languages one a common and one higher language. One that is polite and soft to the ears, and more pleasing, one that is rough, and sounds hard to the ear.

This is very noticeable in languages like Farsi, where the common Farsi is crude, and but higher Farsi is soft and musical.

We also find this in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu, and the various dialects.

In the Hindi related dialects, the terms “Aap” are a polite term but “tu” is not.

In some cultures, (in rural India and generally in the lower classes), “Tu” is used commonly, and used to identify everyone, be they elders, mothers, whatever, but in a cultured society, (and ‘culture’ has very little to do with monetary position), the term Aap is more commonly used.

Someone growing up, in a family where Tu is used all the time for everyone, will carry on using the term for everyone around him or her, but when used with people who are not on familiar terms, it will and does sound offensive and will be considered as such.

Part of communication is then to consider what message the speaker is trying to send.

The wrong language, and words, can cause the listener to take offence.

One could try and be a little sensitive in one’s choice of words and tone.

I want to share an incident which happened with me and my friend last night which really came as a shock to me that our own people are not ready to accept us as a part of this educated society.

The real progress is possible when we will show faith in what we are.We are born best

while making an attempt to answer the question, i wud 1st like to touch sumit's mindset, wch in my opinion everyone failed to read.

i feel tht sumit is vry much obsessed with speaking jaatu/haryanvi language, nd especially when it cums to the class of educated jaats his obsession to jaatu language is even more predominant. in this perspective if u read initial lines of the post, he has vry categorically mentioned the class of educated jats accompanying him...all speaking jaatu language.

totally overpowered with this obsession, sumit found the behavior of the security man not upto his liking. i guess, sumit after getting the knowledge tht the security man himself is a jat expected sum sort of favorable attitude frm him, wch was not the case nd thts the reason he felt a bit offended...or dejected to put myself in better appropriate words.

i was also born nd brought up in delhi, as such i m very much conversed with the delhi/jat culture. having said so nd giving my answer a personal touch, i wud confess to say tht i might wud hv behaved in vry much the same way...सबके बटुए तो चेक करन लाग र्या है, और अपने भाईबंद ही इसे कोन्या भा रहे.
...now cuming bck to the subject nd picking few lines frm sumit's post, i wud like to answer pointwise...

1. th
at our own people are not ready to accept us as a part of this educated society.
my views : bhaisaheb kis se aap ye expect kar rahe hein...ek security man se? pls. compare his level of eduction with yrs. as well as of yr. friends.
2.
But few words of english had more strength than our mother tongue
my views : bhaisaheb i dont agree to this, it all depends where u use english as yr medium of communication or jaatu as yr. medium of communication. in this particular case u were earlier conversing in jaatu nd later resorted to english. this can also happen viceversa, where jaatu can cum to yr. rescue...hope u understand :D
3. Our own people take us as uneducated and GAWAR
my views : its not the matter of our own ppl taking us as ganwaar, i guess it wud hv bn more appropriate if u hv used 2 options of language at the right place...agn yr. expectations cannot find an answer frm a security person, luking at level of education he is possessing.
4. Why we cant b our ownself?
my views : speaking jaatu doesn't mean tht we r not ourselves (reasons explained abv. in point 1,2 & 3). imagine a scenario where u nd all yr friends go for a decent party tht includes hi class ppl...sum of them intellectuals. do u think tht u'll b able to spk in yr. jaatu language there? i guess NOT...nd if u do wat d'u think wud b the opinion of ppl in the gathering...i guess u know the answer...
imagine the same scenario with a different perspective...u r there in the party, dressed in yr. best possible attire, spkng fluent english on a decent subject...there is an onlooker who is hearing yr. conversation nd at a certain pt. he too jumps into yr. conversation...nd as the conversation progresses he is damn to impressed with yr. viewpoints nd yr grasp on english. suddenly u disclose to him tht u r frm a class of well educated jats :D imagine wat impression tht guy wud gather frm this...hmmm here is a class of jats wch r well educated, belonging to cultured families nd not the typical mollads (i use this word cos in delhi thts the impression ppl hv abt jats...courtesy : the attitude of our DTC drivers/policewalla's) ;):p:)

i narrate this incidence, cos i've gone thru tht feeling often times...it was overwhelming, nd i really felt proud to b a JAT.

so my friend, use the language where u feel it wud hv the right impact. thts all i've to say. i guess its hi time now for u to come up nd express wat u feel after getting all these opinions on the thread. :)

P.S. : if u think rightfully, u will realize tht security man was doing his job. :)
