An 80 year old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45 years old highly educated son. Suddenly a crow perched on their window.

The Father asked his Son, "What is this?" The Son replied "It is a crow". After a few minutes, the Father asked his Son the 2nd time, "What is this?" The Son said "Father, I have just now told
you. It's a crow".

After a little while, the old Father again asked his Son the 3rd time "What is this?" At this time some ex-pression of irritation was felt in the Son's tone when he said to his Father with a rebuff. "It's a crow, a crow".

A little after, the Father again asked his Son the 4th time, "What is this?" This time the Son shouted at his Father, "Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times 'IT IS A CROW'. Are you not able to understand this?"

A little later the Father went to his room and came back with an old tattered diary, which he had maintained since his Son was born. On opening a page, he asked his Son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:-

"Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My Son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a Crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question again and again for 23 times. I did not at all feel irritated I rather felt affection for my innocent child".

While the little child asked him 23 times "What is this", the Father had felt no irritation in replying to the same question all 23 times and when today the Father asked his Son the same question just 4 times, the Son felt irritated and annoyed.

So, if your parents attain old age, do not repulse them or look at them as a burden, but speak to them a gracious word, be cool, obedient, humble and kind to them. Be considerate to your parents. From today say this aloud, "I want to see my parents happy forever. They have cared for me ever since I was a little child. They have
always showered their selfless love on me. They crossed all mountains and valleys without seeing the storm and heat to make me a person presentable in the society today".

Say a prayer to God, "I will serve my old parents in the BEST way. I
will say all good and kind words to my dear parents, no matter how
they behave.

This is LOVE

This is the difference-

Our parents always palliate to omit all of our woes. They do their best to make their children strong enough to move across all the hurdles of life.

Take little time to think over what we have given to them.

We must Love & Respect our parents.
& I know we do.

I am so glad to see this thread here. Thank you so much Sanjay bhaisahab.

And, it reminds me of an old post: http://www.jatland.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12453&highlight=parents
A long time ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy loved to come and play around it everyday. He climbed to the tree top, ate the apples, took a nap under the shadow... He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by... the little boy had grown up and he no longer played around the tree everyday. One day, the boy came back to the tree and he looked sad. "Come and play with me," the tree asked the boy. "I am no longer a kid, I don't play around trees anymore." The boy
replied, "I want toys. I need money to buy them." "Sorry, but I don't have money...but you can pick all my apples and sell them. Then you will have money." The boy was so excited. He grabbed all the apples on the tree and left happily. The boy never came back after he picked the apples.

The tree was sad. One day, the boy return! ed and the tree was so excited. "Come and play with me" the tree said. "I don't have time to play. I have to work for my family. We need a house for shelter. Can you help me?" "Sorry, but I don't have a house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house." So the boy cut all the branches of the tree and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy never came back since then.

The tree was again lonely and sad. One hot summer day, the boy returned and the tree was delighted. "Come and play with me!" the tree said. "I am sad and getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?" "Use my trunk to build your boat. You can sail far away and be happy." So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never showed up for a long time.

Finally, the boy returned after he left for so ma! ny years. "Sorry, my boy. But I don't have anything for you anymore. No more apples for you..." the ree said. "I don't have teeth to bite" the boy replied. "No more trunk for you to climb on" "I am too old for that now" the boy said. "I really can't give you anything ... the only thing left is my dying roots" the tree said with tears. "I don't need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired after all these years." The boy replied. "Good! Old tree roots is the best place to lean on and rest. Come, Come sit down with me and rest." The boy sat down and the tree was glad and smiled with tears.......

This is a story for everyone. The tree is our parents. When we were young, we loved to play with Mom and Dad... When we grew up, we left them... only come to them when we need something or when we are in trouble. No matter what, parents w! ill always be there and give everything they can to make you happy. You may think the boy is cruel to the tree but that is how all of us are treating our parents. And love your parents, no matter where they are.

Thanks,
Sumit

Tyler Cowen has an interesting post about the respect towards parents in different countries.

'In which countries do kids respect their parents the most?

Here was my earlier post on the topic, now Ban Chuan Cheah is kind enough to send me questionnaire data from the World Values Survey. The question is:

With which of these two statements do you tend to agree? (CODE ONE ANSWER ONLY)
A. Regardless of what the qualities and faults of one's parents are, one must always love and respect them.
B. One does not have the duty to respect and love parents who have not earned it by their behaviour and attitudes.

1. Always
2. Earned
3. Neither

Some rates of answering "Always" are:

Netherlands: 31.9 percent, Denmark: 35.9, Germany: 59.2, Belarus: 70.9, Japan: 71.6, France: 74.7, United States: 77.2, Canada: 77.6, India: 88.8, China: 94.5, Puerto Rico: 97.5, Vietnam: 99.3.

Based on these and other numbers, I tentatively conclude that wealth breeds parental disrespect, being Asian brings greater respect for parents, and having a strong welfare state is correlated with disrespect for parents. Being a former East Bloc totalitarian state doesn't have nearly the oomph I would have expected; many East European countries fall into the 70-80 percent range.'

Tree story

Dear ss bhai

If you follow the tree story its really give deep message, but only you have a good heart to understand

interesting survey

Dear SM

its good survey but still India is far behind with other Asian countries and my prediction is totally wrong that India will be NO 1 in this type of survey

cheers

Not by the survey you presented above. I think its strongly correlated to the Human Development Index (http://hdr.undp.org/en/statistics/). USA has higher per capita income than Netherlands but parental respect is double in the US comapred to Netherlands.

Asian countries (Japan - scores high on HDI but parental respect is also high) will not correlate because the culture is differnet from Western countries.

Oh you make an excellent point about Japan. Although Tyler Cowen has taken in HDI into account since he talks about welfare state.

Whatever said and done, I think North Europeans are are far more open and secular than the rest of the world. Absence of strong catholicism is one reason I can think of.

Exactly, Scandinavian countries figure prominently in the list of populations with the most atheists / agnostics. Not surprisingly they are also considered the most secular and peaceful. like you pointed out aove.
