I remember, Tata Institute of social sciences used to have such short cources/ Certificate courses.

I don't remember the names but there are hundreds of small institutes that help you with the public speaking etc.

There are some books available on this topic.

I liked "You Can Win" by Shiv Khera. It is a very nice book !

It's hindi Version, "Jeet Aapki" also available.

Cheers!

Hi Anil,
In case you do not find a suitable institute then, a suggestion on the qickest way:
Analyze your skill set, from that set pick up the ones you are most confident in, and see how you can fit those skills with the need of the hour. Since you would be using skills you are best at, you would be more confident of yourself.
My prof used to say that there is only one way to develop communication skills- Practice and Practice and Practice....and clothes can camouflage personality anytime...
And you are already blessed with knowledge!!!!
Good luck for your "need of hour" :)
(P.S: A friend of mine used to dabble in communication/personality development at Career Launcher. If you are interested, I can direct you to him for self-help pointers :))
Regards,
Anju

Hi Anju,

Thank You very much,

I agree with you, practice really helps. I am doing it on my own but I feel an expert advise can make a difference. Again as ussually happens in case of people like us from rural background - lack of exposure. I am technically sound, have good knowledge but feels sometime on backfoot when it comes to gain focus of people on the work i do.
Thats what create difference - We work better but someone who even can't meet that standard of work but due to the soft skill they can turn the situation in their favour.
One more thing which made it urgent is the onsite opportunity. Its coming my way in near future and i wanna be prepared for that.

You mentioned above about some of your friend (Career Launcher). Is he located in mumbai? Please see if how he can help. Let me know if you wanna me contact him. If so provide me his contact details.

Thanks

Anil

Hi Anil,
One of my colleagues is from IITD, hails from a village in Maharashtra, very poor in communication skills. But he has basic social skills- is polite, respectful, and a great listener. Since he lacks the fluency in language, he explains his ideas by illustrating them on board, paper, anything.
Let me check with my friend, and will send you his contact details.
Regards,
Anju

Hi Anil , Let me try and do my bit in trying to help you out as well!

Anju listed the basic qualities one needs , polite , respectful and a gret listener!
And also mentioned some alternatives like writings , charts , graphs etc to convey your best!

Let me write some very practicl thingys ( and that should cater to situation in the sense that I myself was not great at speaking skills some years back :)!

1) Initially try and listen a lot ! Try and pick up words that people commonly use to express situations , specially in profession , that should add to the hip-hop' ness of your speaking skills , Just to give you examples , like we on in our office , use , "Should be good " , "good to go " etc etc , Short but sweet! :) I am not advising that one should be prudent , but no point in being very laid back as well!

2) Read a lot ! Again the same mantra as above , pick up words and try and think where and how you can use them. Tell you the truth , this was how I used to write my board exams ( I would for any answer from the guide pick up the theme and a few words ( difficult types ) and when writing in exam , will make sure I use those words ,come what may :D Just to give my answer look pretty "quality"-ish!:D
The same is true , whenever I see a new word , I look up google for meaning , usage etc and make sure I use it within a few days so that I get comfortable in using it!

3) Speak a lot ! Ok , if you are not comfortable with speaking in a group , then do it alone! I remember talking to myself and I still do it time when I am walking back home from office , if not actually speaking then at least doing it in your mind ! Make your thoughts running in your mind into sentences , try and argue with your self!

Besides all this , I guess you have to keep the hesitation factor out ! I remember I got a real positive shock at my year end review when my manager told me how he like my approach of getting back at him for further information on what actually does he need! ( I remember it was like so embarrassing for me to turn up and ask him on what does he need , I used to think ki " Kya sochega , ki I could not grasp the problem in one go ! " ). He told me that I performed the perfect role of being a servicer considering him as a client! :)

So mate , just unleash yourself , there is a lot to be uncovered , I wish you luck! :)

Regards,
Anil

@Anil Rathee: i want to add few lines from my side regarding 'picking up' the words. personality development is not only limited to good vocab but nevertheless it is an integral part. :)

1) Initially try and listen a lot ! Try and pick up words that people commonly use to express situations , specially in profession , that should add to the hip-hop' ness of your speaking skills...

@Anil Rathee: One of the simplest and entertaining way could be watching tv sitcoms. it will be better if u download or record these episodes and later watch it with subtitles.
subtitles for almost all tv serials can be found on net.
Believe me it is an excellent way of improving your vocabulary. u can learn the proper usage and pronunciation. i'll suggest The Big Bang Theory, two and half men, heroes, Lost or oldies like F.R.I.E.N.D.S., That's 70 show. etc.

It should be fun. :)

you can also watch 'English movies' with 'English subtitles'. believe me u'll be surprised how often we misunderstand many dialogues. :)

like other day: one character (a chef) said something which i took like: "ok, laugh on me, i am the cook." (thanks to her profession :D)
But subtitles showed it was "Kook" not 'cook'. :o
Million guesses and i would have never get that one!!:tamatar

2) Read a lot! pick up words and try and think where and how you can use them.

very true... in fact i read somewhere (some sort of research proceedings) that a normal person 'learn' (remembered forever) a new word if it is encountered at least six times within a 'considerable time-span'. so seeing a word and simply looking its meaning in dictionary is not going to help you!! it will disappear faster than u learned.

Practicing should help in getting over the hesitation and as always confidence is the key.

Good Luck. :)

Accepting challange is the first sign of good personality

Dear Anil,
Accepting a challange is the first and foremost requirement of a good personality. You accepted on site job means you have it in you. Now what is required is only icing on the cake.
I also strongly suggest reading a book daily for at least 20 min at bed time, actually it is a good habit. You can Win is good starter as suggested earlier. I have a list of books to read serially for the same. Contact er_skv@rediffmail.com for the same.
Anil actually the on site job is the best coaching class of your life fof PD just you have to prepare for it by reading books and makcan ing notes that will ultimately becomes part of you.
The knowledge you will gain will not help you in your job but the preparation will make you confident and you will be part of the solution or you will find solution from the resources available at the moment.
Hope it will be of some help to you. --Sandeep

Personality of a Software Engineer

It should not be generalized, A S/W professional must be known by his logical, analytical and problem solving skills...........
In communication he must be as simple as possible, means when he talks non techies could follow him.

Could you please tell your need here, hope I am not asking too personal question?

You got style, man

hey Anil

Communication skills and language improve gradually, it won't happen overnight. Watching a lot of t.v., reading newspapers and books are ways to improve your language. But unfortunately in most Indian cities we don't have that english environment. If you really want to improve your english and communication skills I would suggest you go to a place where you have no choice but to speak english, and I think the practical approach is best when it comes to improving your language. You could read a whole lot of books and watch a lot t.v. but if you dont practice it in real life you won't get too far. My father when he was young had problems similar to you. Keep positive, work hard, and as you grow professionally Im sure your language and communication skills will also improve. I think it's really cool that you want to improve yourself, thats the important thing, the desire to improve yourself.
