You may be eligible for a PhD just after graduation if a proposal in this regard gets the government's nod. A committee, appointed by the government to suggest academic activities and functioning of the 14 upcoming world class universities, is seriously mulling over this idea which is seen as a step to attract more students to research.

The new system, if implemented, would bypass the conventional route of doing PhD after Masters and M Phil programmes.

"The proposal is that the new 14 universities will introduce a four-year under-graduate course with direct mobility to PhD. Those who want to do MA, they can as well do so by additional one-year course after four-year graduation," UGC chairman Prof Sukhadeo Thorat, who heads the committee, said.

The rationale behind such proposal is that in the conventional system, students tend to lose interest for PhD after they spend three years of graduation, two years for Masters degree and again two years for M Phil.

"The conventional method is a long route. The new proposal on PhD would cut short on M Phil and Masters," he said.

The proposal assumes significance in view of less number of students taking interest into research.

"This is a good idea. The committee will discuss it and take a final decision on it with a month time," Thorat said.

very attractive!!

will definitely increase the Ph.D. aspirants in the near future

at present, if i have to do Ph.D., then do i have to go for M.Phil. first or can directly go for the same after Masters?

u can do Phd after master degree but if u clear ugc net + fellowship test u will be provided stipend...during ur Phd..else u can take admission when notification for admission r given out in newspaper nd on universities sites......

Isn't it a reality already...
IISc, TIFR, NCBS all these institute offers Integrated Ph.D. course...
Regarding stipend even NET JRF is not a must anymore.
There are several other modes of getting fellowship specially in science and engineering... Many institutes and CSIR labs provide stipend for phd.. they have their own entrance exams!!!

I wonder how 'this step' is going to affect OR generate any renewed interest in research, considering the kind of packages s/w and IT firm offer!!!

Moreover, producing more and more "recycled" phd thesis is not going to help the research scienerio in our beloved country!! Quality is THE WORD in research!!
