PM thanks British for good governance...

I am still of the view that the praise could have been avoided as just one phrase is enough to ignite heated debate. In the House it will be hard for them to defend. Opposition has already started shouting from rooftops and will certainly gherao the PM in Lok Sabha on this. Remember Agra failed just because of one phrase. The PM himself had summoned Natwar Singh for just one sentence "not we, our opponents are responsible for India's nuclear power".

Sehrawat ji,

Point well taken. Natwar Singh analogy is appropriate...

Sehrawat Sahab,

India is a very peculiar nation. I find it really very hard to understand as to what triggers strong reactions from Indian masses. Here are few samples and Indian reactions;

1. Nixon and Kissinger calling names: Hardly any Indian reaction. Neither government nor public had any major reaction. Mrs Gandhi’s grand children also had nothing to say. Togadias and Singhals did not utter a word when all Indians were called bastards..

2. Advani calling Jinnah secular: all hell broke loose in RSS and VHP camps. Secular communists also had nothing to say in support of newly emerged secular Advani.

3. Punjabis are liars: Not a single Punjabi has reacted apart from that PIL. No mass demonstrations..nothing of the sort.

Honestly I have no clue as to what triggers Indian mind to protest? Matter of research indeed.

Rajendra Uncle ji,

Add to that the reaction on Ayodhya incident: there were comments on the Ayodhya thread that indicate that a few people seemed to have been offended by the recent Ayodhya incident more than they were offended by, say, the attack on our Parliament.

Intriguing indeed.

Deepender! It really saddens me to see how our people react and behave. Let me add few more;

1. Muslims have been kicking and killing Sikhs all through history. However, khalistanis are friendlier with Pakistan than with rest of the India. At the peak of Khalistan movement, almost half of India was on their map, but not the nankana sahib where Guru Nanak was born and not Lahore where great Sikh ruler Ranjit Singh ruled.

2. Most sacred place of Hindus, Mount Kailash and Mansarovar are in Tibet. Not many Indians get the chance to visit these places. Has anyone ever heard VHP and RSS putting any demands on China to hand over the places to Hindus? Think of an attack on Mecca by USA..Whole Muslim world will unite for ever.. However no words against China from our so-called nationalist RSS and VHP.

Gaon ki ek kahawat hai ki mulla ki daur masjid tak..ya fir kanto ki daur batode tak..

Rajendraji,

The people of India can be easily compared to ships. They will not move unless there is someone to lead. The common man just does not react to anything but has left it to political parties and the political parties react only to issues whcih are likely to get them votes or to embarrass the party in power. The aim of our political parties, from a to z, is mud slinging. I too am baffled that not even a leaf stirred even in Congress against the Yankies.

Dear Anuj,
sorry for interruption but USA was also ruled by Britishers and G Washington fought against them whom they consider father of the nation.

It would be great if you can post the original speech/news article on which this thread is based.

and I also think this argument that British gave India the infrastructure and so forth is not correct. Mangolia went nowhere but US did, Japan did. Who know in those 300 years, India could have gone ANYWHERE.

Modern polticle correctness require Britain to be embarassed about it's imperelist past and not the third world. Thanking Britishers for building Indian Railways while otherwise treating them as slave, that too by Indian prime minister is very stupid. Although he was not making a representative speech, but I think he needs to be more careful.

Did they do all these good things thinking that 100 years from now Indian people would be thanking US? no? If by a matter of chance, ( THE so called freedom struggle?) it turned out to be good (idea must have been to tap out of India for next thousand years). THEN WHY THEY DESERVE A THANKS.

The queen doen't even want to say sorry for Jaila Wala. But Indian should be thankful for the railroad?

This is for sure that the PM did not say anything objectionable in his speech, but here on the net many of us thanking the british rule.It is true that Britisher started some good things like railways and governing but one should not thank them without knowing their intention and the intention was not to give India a good infrastructure but to take the natural resources from indian interiors for their industries. This is only one example there are many and i think the respected members will bring them out one by one.

Regards.

baat samazh mein naheen aayee, thanks kyon kiya pm nee british ko ham par rule karne ke liye? seems like servant mentality.
Who is happy to be ruled by the other? I remember reading somewhere that once when gandhiji was travelling in south africa (ruled by the british)he read a a sign - dogs and indians not allowed in that particular compartment and gandhiji was either thrown out of the train or that compartment itself.
I think british exploited India and were cruel people. Whatever the outcome of their rule, their intentions were not holistic. We cannot get in a discussion about what if germans or french or someone else ruled India and then what would have happened?
Past is past, and we cannot blame the british of today for what the british of yesterday did. But I would not want them to come back as rulers again.

I think an Indian PM should not be in the business of "thanking" his
masters. Let other academicians debate out the "good" or the "bad" done
bythe British. These debates can go on and on...this one being one such example.
The PM should keep a check on his tongue. The sentiments of a billion people
are at stake.

And, in any case, let the old woman on the throne apologize for the
injustices done, along with symbolic gesture of returning the Kohinoor.

The PM needs to be cognizant of a lot many things, least of which is the
fodder being provided to the opposition by his irresponsible remarks. He
ought to know better. A lot of diplomacy and tact is necessary in his
position, and given his resume, we expected that of him.

As a diplomat one needs to know that there are many things which you
may agree with and believe, but never admit. Everything is not about
being truthful. There is the truth we may know and there is the truth
we let out of our mouths.

He let us down !

Your have hit the nail on its head, Raj.

The Truth...

Dear All,

There is a lot of debate going on as to why Mughals/British ruled us and whether what they did was right or wrong. I can't understand as to why we can't understand such a simple thing. We were a weak people and those who were stronger, cleverer, mightier ruled us. And they ruled with a 'DANDA'. So. It is a historical fact that when a nation is occupied by another, it is RULED. It is now pointless to discuss as to why my great-great-greatest grand father did not revolt against these occupiers.

The Mughals ruled India and did whatever they could to destroy our self belief. They destroyed our temples with impunity and they would be glad to do so again, given half a chance.

And as to why our politicians did not raise their voice when it came to light that Nixon & Kissinger refered to us as 'Bastards'. What else do you think the President & Foreign Secretary will call the people of a nation that has been ruled by invaders for centuries? No politician will raise their voice. They know it that if they do, there is no Visa for their 'Baba Log' to go to 'Dreamland'.

Our PM is a very intelligent man and he knows whom to keep on the right side. He knows that the common man is more interested in saving his bum from getting flooded rather than discuss about what he said in England. The so called intellectuals would discuss this issue till they find the next one.

Regards,

JS Malik
