Bhiwani (Haryana), Mar 8 (PTI) In yet another instance of defiance of the law, a kangaroo court has nullified the marriage of a couple saying it was solemnised in violation of social norms.
A meeting of the Khap (caste) Panchayat, chaired by former Haryana Chief Minister Hukum Singh, at Charkhi Dadri yesterday ordered Shri Bhagwan and Anita to snap ties within a week.
It said their wedlock was in violation of social norms of "bhaichara" (brotherhood) between Legha and Faugat lineages.
The boy had Lehga lineage and the girl Faugat and both belonged to neighbouring Samaspur and Makdani villages.
The Panchayat, which ostracised the groom's family, decreed the boy and the girl to return to their respective families and begin divorce proceedings.
It said strict action would be taken if the order was not complied with.
The couple had fled to Jaipur after their marriage.
