Can you please explain as to what is not possible for a 12 year old?

Answer is (a). as product of age is 36 so all options satisfy it.
now the sum of age is equal to house number of next door.
he is confuse because a and b have sum 13. so he came back. she replied that eldest son is sleeping.in option b there are two son of same age and elder than 3rd.so using word eldest for a son is not possible ..

options:Answer
a) 9,2,2
b) 6,6,1
c) 12,3,1
d) 6,3,2

Two clues given:-

(i) Sum of their ages is equal to the address of the house next door.
(ii) Oldest child is sleeping up the stairs.

Since the product of ages is 36, and the given options are:-

Ages :::::::Sum of Ages

9,2,2 ===> 13
6,6,1 ===> 13

12,3,1====> 16
6,3,2 ====> 11

Now since the census taker goes to sees the house number next door, and then comes back for another clue, this means that the solution set contains more than one value. In this case, as we can see , sum of ages for both the options [9,2,2] and [6,6,1] is 13. Hence he was confused and asked for another clue. By the second clue, we can omit out the [6,6,1] set, since the woman has referred the "oldest" child. Hence the solution can be option (a) [9,2,2]

cracked correctly neetu, actually option should not be given in this puzzle to find out the strong point behind the second clue.
possible factors of 36 are

36,1,1>>38
18,2,1>>23
12,3,1>>16
9,4,1>>14
9,2,2>>13
6,6,1>>13

6,3,2>>11
4,3,3>>10
now if if no of next house is not 13 than he will find the unique ans and second clue is not reqd. but he comes for second clue that means next door house no is 13 being two sets of answers. now lady is referring about oldest son , means that 6,6 ,1 option is ruled out and he gets the correct ans by this clue.
nice puzzle Dahiya sir
