Indian actress Shilpa Shetty may appear lost and out of depth as she prepares half-cooked chicken on the reality show 'Big Brother', but desi voyeurs in Britain have flooded broadcasting authorities with complaints of racism by others in the house against her.

Britain's broadcasting watchdog Ofcom is investigating nearly 200 complaints about alleged racism against her even as strong opinions are being expressed on Asian radio stations and websites in her support. Asian radio station Sunrise received several calls on a phone-in on Sunday from viewers, complaining about racism against Shetty.

According to her fans and fawns, the long-legged Bollywood stunner is being targeted by some housemates because she is Indian and is being described in what can be called unparliamentary language.

Big Brother housemates Jade Goody, Danielle Lloyd and Jo O'Meara seem to have ganged up against Shetty in the past few days. Shetty has become the subject of snide and biting remarks because of her hauteur and background as the heartthrob of millions of Bollywood fans.

Channel Four, which broadcasts the popular reality show, has said that her treatment in the house is "girly rivalry" and that it would not tolerate bullying or racism.

Shetty's housemates have often referred to her as 'the Indian', and some have found it difficult to pronounce her name, poked fun at her accent and asked her if she lived in a shack.

An Ofcom spokeswoman said: "We have had approximately 200 complaints of racism. Quite a lot of websites have been discussing the issue and urging people to get in contact with us. We will look into each individual complaint."

Speaking to the BBC Asian Network, evicted housemate Carole Malone said she believes the incidents were motivated by jealousy.

"Shilpa is too good looking for her own good. She's an incredibly powerful and beautiful woman. She is a very strong woman and can handle it.

"I spoke to her about it when I was in the house. Shilpa feels that she represents the Indian/Asian community and doesn't want to let them or herself down by retaliating".

The Evening Standard reported that producers of the reality show held an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss whether comments made to Shetty could be construed as racism.

An unnamed source told the paper: "Shilpa was not called a 'paki'. If the producers thought that anything that was said was overtly racist, the contestant who made the remark would be out.

"Shilpa is no shrinking violet and is standing up for herself. But producers are very concerned about the situation and monitoring the housemates very closely regarding this issue."

A spokeswoman for Channel 4 said: "We do not tolerate bullying or racism in any form on Big Brother."

Former Big Brother contestant, Herjender 'Gos' Gosal said: "If people are too ignorant to learn a bit about other cultures, and make an effort to pronounce someone's name properly then that is racism. It's sickening to watch.

"Some of these so-called celebrities should know better and if I was treated like that during my time in the house I would not stand for it and demand the producers take action.

"Unfortunately conflict gets producers higher ratings, but it shouldn't be at the cost of offending the very community you are hoping to appeal to by putting a Bollywood star in the house in the first place."

Shetty's manager, Jazz Barton said: "Britain is a multi-racial society and this shouldn't be happening on a reality show like Big Brother. I've raised my concerns to the producers.

"Just because Shilpa is beautiful, articulate and intelligent, people feel threatened. When they took the mickey out of her accent, I thought that was unacceptable. She may have an Indian accent but her vocabulary is better than a lot of the other contestants.

"Shilpa has worked hard to get to where she has - not found fame from simply being on a reality show. I really hope the public show her support and vote to keep her in, because she is a decent person.

According to Shilpa's mother who has heard from friends in the UK, Shilpa is having a tough time of it, and is facing a lot of hostility - she is quite upset about it. lets see how Channel 4 are going to handle this.

Nothing we can do about it!!!!

Dear Ratheeji,
No matter whatever they claim but Racism persists in this world and there is no denial to that. You must be knowing this better than me. I remember someone said to me that "We all are racists, the only difference between us is that how good are we in putting lid on top of it".I found his words 100% true.I dont think that its ever going to stop.
Shetty's housemates have often referred to her as 'the Indian', and some have found it difficult to pronounce her name, poked fun at her accent
Dont we do the same thing in our country with Biharis? We laugh at their accent sometimes. Or what else an Indian is supposed to be called as? a Chinese?Spaniard?Dutch? or what?
Media is just hyping about this, maybe a publicity stunt.I dont know.
This was Shilpa Shetty thats why her case was highlighted because people saw it on TV or whatever. There are hundreds of incidents taking place everyday but who cares.Monty Panesar was called a pighead but no one even apologised.Anyway the apology was not going to make any difference since the damage was already done.I believe that this is just to raise the viewership ratings and make BB more popular.
(PS:Ratheeji could you please provide the source of this news.I am just interested in knowing about it.Thanks)

U- Turn

Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, at the centre of a fierce controversy over alleged racist slurs hurled at her on a British reality TV show, went back on Thursday night on her charge that she was the victim of racism.

"I don't feel there was any racial discrimination from Jade's (one of the contestant of the show the Big Brother) end," British Channel 4 television quoted her as saying in a statement put on its website.

On Wednesday, Shilpa had said that she was the victim of racial remarks. But the channel quoted her on Thursday evening as saying - "I don't feel there was any racial discrimination happening from Jade's end. I don't think that's true. I think there's lots of insecurities from Jade but it's definitely not racial."

The Big Brother asked her if she still thought that Jade's argument with her two days ago was racially motivated. Shilpa shook her head.

"No, I take it back. Everyone was having an argument. I don't think that is true now. People say things in a fit of anger. But I stand corrected", the actress said.

Shilpa said, "It's been a fractious few days in the Big Brother House. I'm happy today. I wasn't happy two days ago. The way I live, if something has saddened me, it takes me a day to understand, analyse and then I just leave it right there and then I move on, that's the way I've always lived.

"Today, I am in a calm frame of mind so I would just like to say that an apology is definitely in order and if Jade apologises I will apologise back and make up with her. I don't have anything against Jade. I just don't like the way she speaks."

"I don't want people to think and feel that I feel that way. In fact, I'd like you to please clarify.. put this as a statement from my side, if you can: I don't feel there was any racial discrimination happening from Jade's end. I don't think that's true. I think there's lots of insecurities from Jade, but it's definitely not racial," Shilpa said.

has this incident did good or bad to Shilpa?

what i am thinking is ..............has this incident did good or bad to Shilpa?

Good : because in today world any publicity gained is ok...good or bad

Bad : It must have emotionally hurt her as an individual ....if she was actually abused, as now she has taken a U turn and has denied the incident.

By the way I have heard that contents living in the Big Brother House are cut off from the outside world. If that true then how did she come to know about the hullaa being created because of this incident?

Lol :) :) very good point!!!

she must have kicked them all

sam

Indians too are racist,so why the hullabaloo over BIG BROTHER?

As been said about racist remarks targeted at shilpa shetty on the reality show,Big Brother.I also condemn any form of racism. But there is form of racism present in our own society which we seem to conveniently forget.
For instance,At time of marriage,a girl with a dark complexion is often rejected by man whose own complexion might also be dark. Here's a question for those who taking up the cudgels on behalf of Shilpa-Will they accept a dark complexioned girl, without prejudice,as their spouse or daughter inlaw??

We need to look withen before pointing fingers at others.

..."par jo pakdaa gaya wohee choor...".

Dolly ji...u r right...we are all racist to a certain extent..."par jo pakdaa gaya wohee choor".......

Also though I am not taking up the cudgels on behalf of Shilpa...but i would still have condemned the incident even if this would have happened to an ordinary indian or for that matter person of any race or country......well as far as i am concerned i am ready to accept a dark complexioned girl, without prejudice,as my spouse or daughter inlaw...

PS. Am married and my wife is not very fair but very beautiful and intelligent....:) :) :)

Congrats Shilpa......

All well that ends well....after all Shilpa has the last laught when she won the Celebrity Big Brother at the Elstree Studios on the outskirts of London on January 28, 2007.

Not only has she earned 1,40,000 pounds but has has also become a popular name in England. Moreover she is getting offers from Hollywood, Britain, Singapore and Spain. The Indian film industry has also, it seems, been suddenly reminded about the actress's existence.

Congrats Shilpa......

now dis is gettin exaggerated!
too bad on the Brithish's part that they r apologising profusely!
this topic has been raised in their assemblies, n given undue importance.
more than 45,000 complaints have been registered by the british only.they r filled with sduch self-righteousness! i feel sorry for that mis Jade Goody too, 4 her haplesness n despair. she just spoke her mind, n wotever her beliefs ,,she voiced it.
if it were in India, v shud never have apologised (any SC/ST involved)

Dear Deeps,

Am sorry, but are you trying to say that we (Indians) are not worth a apology and the British are going over board in thier reaction to the whole incident???? Batt kuch samaj main nahee ayeee:confused:

And why are you feeling sorry for that miss Jade Goody for her haplesness n despair. You feel that she just She spoke her mind, n wotever her beliefs ,,she voiced it....ok in that case if I abuse you unintentionally **&&$*&%(&)(&)...what will be your reaction?

In fact we should appreciate the British ppl. in the manner they have all condemned the incident.

Sayad app ye kahnaa chaa rahee hain ki abb bicharee Jade Goody se galtee ho gayee to kya usko soole pe lakaoo geee....in that ur intention then am with you.....akhir we are all humans or galtee sab se ho jatee hai.......otherwise not............:) :)

Ye aachi baat nahi hai....

Its not about color or complexion or racism, its all about publicity. This was nothing but publicity stunt to make this serial more popular. There is nothing like reality show….it’s a well written script in advance and every shot has been taken with as many possible takes and re-takes.

And why are we shouting this much? Its human nature! Whenever we get the opportunity, we make this kind of comments on others. How many times you don’t call ‘bihari’ to a rikshawala and some other such comments on other races then jat. No body is clean we all do that. Neither of the races ever misses a chance to abuse others about their race and to prove that they are superior to others. So friends, take it easy and if you want to change the system, please change yourself first. Rest as you wish. Sab ko apni marji se kerne ka haq hai….koi kuch bhi kero, apne baap ka kya jata hai….J
