Dear Friends,

Doctor sahibji or sahibaji pls. try to answer my ques. or bura mat maniyo

(PHD wale Dr. pls. Lathee daatyoo)

In Delhi whenever I visit some hospitals and refer them as a new patient then no's of hospitals asked me to fill up one initial informative paper for records.. there always one line still striking to my mind … “Referred by doctor ? “

( This is everywhere pls. don’t consider Delhi only)

I heard that there is a commission between doctor to doctor for referral scheme and also seen that in actual thro’ one of my friend who is a Dr. in one of leading hospital at Delhi.

In our company we had a visiting doctor ( Ex. CMO of private airlines in India) who always says ,, go to that hospital for further checkup ( that case in Delhi only ..like some big hospitals in delhi..bla..bla..) and refer some doctor and he asked the patient to refer his name…

Even I have seen doctors who tells their patients to buy particular medicine and advise them ki yeh medicine apko sirf isi dukan per milegi ( Jai ho “Particular” Chemist ki or uske chhadawy ki ).

Vaisey I know clearly that mainey sher ki poonch per paaon rakh diya hai but here my question goes..

“” what percentage of doctors are having commission from such referral scenarios, medicine shops , M.R.’s , local 'outside' medical test lab's , equipments purchased from outside by the patient family during his operation and bla.. bla. “”.....List is endless.......

Awaiting some answers for my 'esteemed' query

Dear Uday,

Having spent my last 25 years among Indian medical profession at every level, I know that there is a great deal of truth in what you say. There is lot of commission money involved in referring the patients for diagnostic tests. Usual going rates for referring the CT, MRI and ultrasound are 15%. Except some prestigious clinics and hospitals , most diagnostic centres pay commission. The doctors who are on the panel of corporations, submit lots of cooked up bills where they share the booty with employees.

Trust me, its no more a noble profession as it used to be. There is corruption of different sorts everywhere. In USA they do it through insurance companies in a more sophisticated way. This is why medical treatment has become so expensive in USA.

Yes it is a touchy subject. The reason why referring Doctor's name is required is I believe to get medical history ( Even though I am not a Doctor but know from experience) which happens not only in India but other countries as well.
But as you poited out nothing is so straight forward when it comes to India. There is certainly a potential to misuse the information and get some personal benefit out of it. Doctors are also human being and unfortunately some of them may consider bending some rules for their own benefit. It brings the whole profession in disrepute. But these are hard facts one can not ignore.

Dear Uday Dahiya Ji,

Absolutely right, there is commissions involved in all these cases. The point given by Shri Sheoran ji is also correct.

The cost of medical in US is not high because of the commissions but because of the cost of law suites that are filed by the patients in case they feel that they have not been treated rightly. On each law suite, two attorneys get employed. It is because of this reason, the doctors have to buy the liability insurance and hence this gets added to the cost of medical.

In US, you select you own primary care physician and there is a network of doctors. Based on insurance plan you can select your own doctor, and can go to different doctors if you wish to when ever you want so long the particular doctor is within the network of your insurance plan that you have selected. Similary the prescription drugs you can buy from any drug store of your choice. Hence I think the likelyhood of commission being involved may be less than what we have it in our country.

Dear Tavathia Sahab,

I agree, there is no commission involved in the sense it is known to us in India. However, being very closely associated with the profession at almost all ends in my life, I can tell that there are a large number of new tests or newly intruduced treatment techniques are pushed through the insuarance companies for reimbursement. Many of such tests are redundent and many of the treatments have hardly any proven efficacy. Most of the material about these treatments is posted on the webs by the comercial firms or the hospitals who colloborate with these companies. Patients read this misleading information and then demand doctors the same treatment. Scared of law suits, doctors just cater to what patients demand. In my view this is also a sort of corruption as ultimately the patients pay through heavy insurance premium and doctors are scared and trapped into the system for the fear of law suits..In my view this is nothing but a well organised mafia system.

Dear Rajendra Ji,

That is right. The doctors order more test these days fully knowing some of them may not be mendatory. However it is the fear of law suites that encourages them to order that. I know some of the doctors ready to forgo your copay amount and project inflated bill to insurance company. We have all kind of people that makes the world. I am for one not defending any one. It is difficult to find an honest person. I remember, when people in India used to tell me that a particular person is honest. I used to tell them, that I only consider that person as honest who had the opportunity to become dishonest and did not do so. Some people are honest because they never were teste for honesty.

Now a days Indian Doctors are more in business, they want money, does not matter where it come from, eventhough they may prescribe poison to the patient if they get good comission on that.

This is the most bad professional I have seen in India vry closely. Baki log o jinda logo se paisa kamate hai, lekin maine doctoro ko mare hooye murde se bhi paisa kamate dekha hai...

Devender said right "Kuttagiri ho rahi hai...."

Are mere bhai ise paisa kamana nahi, pocket marna kaho.

kamai to khoon pasine ki hoti hai, ya phir jo bhi apko apke hunar ke badle me jo bhi paisa milta hai wo kamai hai.

Apne sahi kaha, sabse bade chor hote han ye india ke doctors.

Hospital

I have done four year in a delhi's famous hospital in IT deptt.I saw that every doctor from fellowship to chairman of hospital was in the race of earning money.Every expert doctor have own nursing home at home. They catch the patient at hospital and do the operation in his nursing home.If two are in same spatiality there is another seen. They see the patient as MONEY.

Behti ganga mein haath dho rahe hain...all in this profession..from CMO to compounder...big Pharma companies to Chemists...
Surprising thing is that most of the tests like CT scan, ultrasounds are done without any significant results...these are just to show to the patient that something is happening...Aur jab patient ka puri hierarchy ne bewakoof bana rakha hai to woh bhee kya kare...
