Research on history of Jat clans

Virdi ia a Chandravanshi clan.

Virdi ia a village in Junagarh district in Gujarat.

Virdi ia a village in Bhavnagar district in Gujarat.

Virdi ia a village in Amreli district in Gujarat. ‎

Virdi clan is found in Punjab and villages of name Virdi in Gujarat shows its migration from Punjab to Gujarat.

thanks sir,but this is already available on internet,,further more history by any historian or from any book is required

Virdi is a major sub clan of Gurjars and Khatis/wood workers of pre-Partition Punjab as reported in the Census Report of 1881 and D. Ibbetson's Punjab Castes.

Virdi/Virdee being minor sub caste of the Jats, information on this clan of Jats might have been included with either of the two or in both of the two at that time. There is nothing strange in it because several Jat clans have been shown as Rajputs in the data as well as the book.

So, keep your search continued on the suggested guide lines sent to you separately through Personal Message; we shall also try to dig it out sooner or later, and then share it !

Jat Gotras common with Gujars

We have a large number of clans common with Gurjars. This simply indicates that these clans of Gurjar merged with the Jat Federation ans some clans of Jats merged with Gurgar federation. . Gurgar itself is a Jat clan in certain areas. See [wiki]Gurjar[/wiki]. You can read [wiki]History of the Jats[/wiki] by Ram Sarup Joon. It is on Jatland. See [wiki]History of the Jats/Chapter VI[/wiki].

Jat Gotras who joined Gujar force are - Bhind, Bhoria, Bhatti, Babar, Bagiar, Bar, Bhilaut, Bhadan, Chalukya, Chaura, Cirwar, Changas, Dulesra, Duhal, Dehru, Goraya, Jarija, Jinder, Kitcher, Kataria, Khokkar, Khirya, Khare, Kharal, Punia, Rathi, Rawasia, Phalswal (Poruval), Sindher, Singal, Sargu, Lamba, Midhan, Matsara, Medh, Puni, Sandal, Thakrela, Titarwal, Tanwar, Thand, Gomat, Girwar, Gaherwal, Jamgal, Jaglain, Bander, Birru, Chandal, Chandel, Chhonker,

History of Luka or Lukha clan

Lukha (लुखा) Lookha (लूखा)[1] is a gotra of Jats living in Barmer, Bikaner district in Rajasthan.

James Tod[2] writes that Numri, Lumri, or Luka Tribe is also a grand subdivision of the Baloch race, and is mentioned by Abu-l Fazl as ranking next to the Kulmani, and being able to bring into the field three hundred cavalry and seven thousand infantry. Gladwin has rendered the name Nomurdy, and is followed by Rennel. The true reading is Nohmardi [3] The Nunris, or Lumris, also styled Luka, a still more familiar term for fox, Hindi lokri or lokhri, are likewise affirmed to be Jat in origin. What is the etymology of the generic term Baloch, which they have assumed, or whether they took it from, or gave it to, Baluchistan, some future inquirer into these subjects may discover.

History of Salar Clan

Salar (सालार) Salaar (सलार) Salar (सलार) is a gotra of Jats in Uttar Pradesh and Pakistan. Salar/Salarya clan found in Afghanistan.

Origin - They are said to be originated from Mahabharata tribe Shalva (शाल्व).

Salar included in Thirty Six Royal Races by James Tod

James Tod is a pioneer historian on Jats who thoroughly scrutinized the bardic records of Rajasthan and Gujarat and also brought to light over a dozen inscriptions on the Jats. We reproduce the Chapter 7 Catalogue of the Thirty Six Royal Races from Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, Volume I, Publisher: Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press 1920, p. 138:

Silar or Salar. — Like the former, we have here but the shade of a name ; though one which, in all probability, originated the epithet Larike, by which the Saurashtra peninsula was known to Ptolemy and the geographers of early Europe. The tribe of Lar was once famous in Saurashtra, and in the annals of Anhilwara mention is made of Siddharaja Jayasingha having extirpated them throughout his dominions. Salar, or Silar, would therefore be distinctively the Lar. Indeed, the author of the Kumarpal Charitra styles it Rajtilak, or ' regal prince ' ; but the name only now exists amongst the mercantile classes professing the faith of Buddha [Jainism] : it is inserted as one of the eighty-four. The greater portion of these are of Rajput origin.

Jat clan names are very ancient they might be coming from the time the concept of "Genesis" as said in "Christianity". It is interesting to see how Jat clan names also cover lot of clans of similar communities like Rajputs, Gujjars, etc.

One of the most distinctive feature is that of "Kingdom of Elamites" and the village "Elam" in Muzaffarnagar. The "Kadian clan" from "Akkadian kingdom"

There are innumerable similarities and references that connect Jat clans to ancient middle east, central asia and other parts of the world and are found in "Old testament" of Bible i.e. the "Hebrew bible" and "Christian Bible".

"The fertile crecent" : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fertile_Crescent

"Mecca" or "Maize" might be coming from concept of Fertile Crescent. We all know the concept of "Mecca di roti"

The main point is: Which were the main tribes living in ancient middle east?

Jats and Thirty Six Royal Races

James Tod though Historian of the Rajputs proves to be a pioneer historian on Jats also.He has to his credit that he thoroughly scrutinized the bardic tales of Rajasthan and Gujarat. He brought to light over a dozen inscriptions on the Jats as well as translated many of them into English. Both of his volumes of Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan reflect his efforts to illuminate the dark patches in History of Jats and as such shed light on our community’s historic contribution in those times in the area of his study.

After consulting Yati of a Jains, poems of Chand, the Kumarpal Charitra, bards of Khichis and Saurashtra the James Tod prepared catalogue No. 6 which has been admitted by the genealogists to be more perfect than any existing document. Result was the Catalogue of the Thirty Six Royal Races. James Tod provides us The table of 36 Royal races and their descriptions. He has included Jat in this list at S.No. 14 after Taxak.

We have wikified the Chapter 7 Catalogue of the Thirty Six Royal Races from Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan, Volume I, Publisher: Humphrey Milford Oxford University Press 1920.

It can be read here - https://www.jatland.com/home/James_Todd_Annals/Chapter_7_Catalogue_of_the_Thirty_Six_Royal_Races

Corrected list of 36 Royal races by James Tod

1. Suryavanshi, 2. Chandravanshi, 3. Guhilot,

4. Yadu, 5. Tuar, 6. Rathor,

7. Kushwaha, 8. Pramara , 9. Chauhan,

10. Chalukya/Solanki, 11. Parihara, 12. Chawara,

13. Tak/Takshak, 14. Jat, 15. Hun,

16. Kathi, 17. Bala, 18. Jhala,

19. Jethwa, 20. Gohil. 21. Sarweya.

22. Salar, 23. Dabhi, 24. Gaur,

25. Doda/Dor. 26. Gaharwal, 27. Bargujar,

28. Sengar, 29. Sikarwal, 30. Bais,

31. Dahia, 32. Johya, 33. Mohil,

34. Nikumbha, 35. Rajpali, 36. Dahima

It is to be noted that out of these 36 Races only three at S.No. 23. Dabhi, 34. Nikumbha, 35. Rajpali, are not the clans of Jats. Rest all are Jat clans, though their population and distribution may vary. This shows the antiquity of the Jat clans. It is still a matter of intensive research where, when and why these clans joined the Jat Federation.

This proves also what has been stated in Devasamhita.

Tod was a great researcher, well read historian and always in quest for truth in historical data. When one reads his narrative of the royal races of Rajasthan, which also throws welcome lights on parts of Madhya Pradesh and Gujrarat as well as some region of the then United Punjab, one is amazed how he tries to co-relate history of the world and as such of mankind as such to his universe of study.

He seems to have used the word Rajput for all ruling dynasties of the past as well as to describe the then Rajput clan/castes as well whether they were ruling or not. The differentiation between the social and political standing of the Jats and the Rajputs in the early 19th century when he undertook his research has definitely coloured his deductions to an extent. So one may agree or disagree with results of his studies but none can overlook his lasting research.

But he has honestly left many points open for further in-depth study where he had no sufficient data at his command.

Therefore, his Annals and Antiquities of Rajasthan remains a classic example of pioneer historiography of clan studies for not only Rajputs but the Jats as well.

Jat Gotras

There are lot of Jat gotras which are similar and have common origins with other community gotras :

These gotras might hold meaning of their ancient past.

I propose a thread which explores this issue:

Kalheer: This is combination of two words: Kal + Heer.

Kal which means "Time" in sanskrit and "Heer" is a word which means "swamp area or marshy area".

Now which area of swamp is it being talked about and where is it located?

For this we have to travel back in time and visit ancient parts of "Fertile Crescent"

The clue for which are present in the holy books of Judaism/Christianity or Islam.

Second clan which connects with the culture of "Fertile Crescent" is Kadian from "Akkadian civilization as mentioned in fertile crescent".

Kalir (कालीर) people got gotra name after republic named Kalamas (कालाम), whose capital was at Kesputta (केसपुत्त). ( Mahendra Singh Arya et al.: Adhunik Jat Itihas, Agra 1998, p. 228)
