In Between World of Vikram Lall

Hi Folks

Just finished reading the above stated titled book. The author is Vassanji and what an amazing book it is, so much detail, well researched fiction.

The book is about a Vikram Lall, who is from a Indian family in Kenya, its about him growing up, right from the british rule in Kenya to their freedom and corruption. If someone was to make a movie on it, it would be something like Lord of War, but in an indian family context and only less corrupt character.

If you are interested in Africa, and in confused loyalties, how corruption breeds, this is a good book to read...

Tuesday's With Morrie!!

Yeah, thats the name of the book.......TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE........the finest book i have ever read.....its a conversation between a teacher and a student who meet each other after a long long time, unfortunately when teacher is in the last days of his life. Seriously, one can have the life's greatest lessons in this small n sweet book.....Do have a look!!! You surely wont regret readin it!!!:)

India Unbound

Well, this book INDIA UNBOUND by Gurcharan das offers a ringside view of the economic and social transformation of a nation. Infact its a story which starts with government n public sector and ends up with rise of capitalism n private sector......deals with the after effects of the same......QUITE INFORMATIVE AND ENTERTAINING!!!

Let’s start this new thread on sharing our reviews on the books we’ve read recently. Philosophies, science, culture, spiritual/religious all are welcome.
O.K. Review my Book in Punjabi, "KAKHH OHLAE LAKHH". It is on religion that covers Hinduism, Christianity/Sikhism, Islam, etc.

It is on my web site and here is the main text:-

agreed...a different book...especially since its given the real-life account feeling...and the frank admission by the author of writing something drastically different...
I am wondering how could I not mention this book before, the book that shook me, touched me, excited me, awed me, scared me, puzzeled me and much more.
Yann Martel's Life of Pi will do the same for everyone, the book is a great read (finished it in two sittings and say 7-9 hrs., couldnt resist). Its edge of the seat experience with a philosophy going as deep as pacific ocean itself where the book is set.
And for the starters well what is better than a little 16 year old boy from India ship wrecked in mighty Pacific with a Zebra, Hyena, Orang-utaan and a Bengal Tiger overboard.
Must read for everyone :)

I'm reading this book by Amartya Sen...'Argumentative Indian', its a good read on ancient roots of tradition of argument in Indian history and culture as opposed to the western image of india as deeply rooted only in religion and caste....I found the first part very informative,....the second part is good too a little too focused on shantiniketan and all that but still informative....will update on third part later....and really looking forward to reading the fourth part called "Reason and Identity"...seems like a perfect read in the heavily argumentative phase/context of jatland :D

Great book to know how congress exploited this country through its sick policies.

Good Thread

Oh my God, I visited this thread today only. I earlier tried to search any thread about books in General Talk section, wher emovies, songs threads are going on,,, but found nothing there. Finally today came across the right place.
Indeed very nice books discussed and reviewed, many missing also :-)

I went thru all the posts and saw 2 people've mentioned, God of Small Things, A truly literary fiction by Roy. But what I liked most and still quoted in my mind after so many years was its theme line -
"There should be some love laws, which should be followed. Who should be loved, and how, And how much."

Feeling enlightened after going thru this thread...:)

'Five Point Someone' ---uff how cud any1 term dis buk 'hilarious'???!!!
readin it was an EFFORT...
it was jus passable...complete wasteof time:( --goin by its reviews n d laurels earned by the author:rolleyes:

'Inscrutable Americans' too...just fine-not much!

i wud still prefer 'Banke-laal' any given day- hehe

bt must say 'Eleven Minutes ' by Paulo Coelho waS good.

Did anyone write about 'The world is flat' by Thomas Friedman?

It sort of presents IT revolution as the second best after discovery that the world is round (big rhetorics in the book) and supports that the world is more of a global community now than ever before and the interconnectedness, interdependencies of economies...

He also gives some informative insights into the working of the IT sector...

Nice read for anyone who wants to be current with whats happening with the world type questions...

Wanted to write about 'Zen and the art of motorcycle maintainence' by Robert Pirsig. Its probably read by everyone who was born after 1950's especially in the western world and individually it has the ability to influence (although more pragmatic part of me found it hard to finish)...I read it after a colleague at a summer academy related how it changed his whole view of seeing things...'the quality'...

What I like about the book is the way its written...as you read it, you realise that you're reading what the writer is thinking...so basically you're mind reading and its fun in the beginning but then.....probably everyone who is involved in solving a question (but has no boundaries defined) can relate to this type of thinking/writing...

I like the author's note too:

What follows is actual occurances although much has been changed for rhetorical purposes, .....However, it should be in no way associated with the great body of factual information relating to orthodox Zen buddhist practice. Its not very factual on motocycles either.

A bit of precaution: read the book till the end otherwise you might find yourself stuck in the deep end of it.......

u read this book thinking it was a hilarious ... i think it is a book penned down by an IITian penning his whole story of his days over there ... i took only 5 min to read whole and get the whole crux....
this is real thats why its boring ... its a middle class person reaching the post of investment banker and his whole true thing in life ...who would have the courage among whole lot of people about the "fan chapter"....
middle class person have all the difficulties as he was having ... and the whole thing////...
imagine world is good but reality is what u have to live with ... thats why it has won laurels....

i think u r the one who in this whole world criticized "lage raho munnabhai"...

:))))))))))))))))))))))))

fine agree with u boring but won laurels ... this is how thing goes in life ...

Dear Deeps,

Had it been an effort, you wouldn't have read it in first place, and then again, if you had read it... Means it had something which attracted you... And that was life at IIT, which any effortless soul would like to know!!

And am sure you enjoyed it, but your natural ego, which says IIT sabkuch hai kya?? Jo eik kitab likh di?? Makes you use such frowns!!

Yeah true.... Naveen sir, life is so.. though it was not all that good for one at IIT, but then the reviews are not maintained all by IITians!! are they? haha

Regards,

Sam.

My say!

Well...

I have been reading this thread, but never thought of putting my say forth! but today!

Don't know whether you guys liked them or not, but my best read till date have been

# Politics of sex, prostitution and pornography, a collection of Australia's social research!

# The Insider, P.V.Narashimha Rao, This book brings about the philosophy of individualism better than Ayn Rand, fans of Fountain Head are advised to have a look into this GREAT work!

# The Class, Erich Seagal has made me numb! the sort of pragmatic ideas he has put forth through the family of riches is simply awesome

# To sir with love, E R Braithwaite has again done a marvelous effort in telling the world the life of down town London! Where racism was at its most intolerable max in those days! And a teacher makes things possible! Simply fantabulous!

# The Great Myth, John Couchois Wright has brought about a great work in criticism of the sacrificial feat in Christianity!

# Thele par Himalaya, Dharmvir Bharti took my breath away at every turn of the life of the common man! Would love to be in the pen of Bharti and become a story of his!

Enough for now, will get back with some other classic works of art!

Regards,

Sam.

hmmm.. good list sam...
out of this , i ve read "To sir with Love, E R Braithwaite" itz really a good book to go thru... I selected this book for my book review assignment in XIth standard just randomly but found it gr8 after reading.. wht a way to change the mindset of white students towards the blacks that even by a black...
The auther narrated the story so nicely that u'll start feeling like a student in his class who is a part of all this..
i would say... jst go thru few pages and i m sure u'll love to continue...

This days, i am going thru "The Search by John Battelle" it tells about How Google and Its Rivals Rewrote the Rules of Business and Transformed Our Culture

The book is nice and the guys related to management would love it. It tells about the story of two Phd. students bored by their research and started writing search algorithms for their internet use which later on turned into Google..
