"Information is the currency of democracy," said Thomas Jefferson.

In our country the RTI Act came into force in 2005. It provides right to information to every citizen on various aspects of administration within 30 days. It has emerged as a strong instrument of getting information by people. It needs wide publicity to acquaint people about its relevance in the functioning of Indian democratic system.

An idea is floated that this Act be included in the School, College curricula to educate the young minds about its importance, uses and implications.

Kindly share your views and suggestions on the issue.

I think awareness is quite important specially in rural areas. Also knowing how to lodge RTI. What are Citizen Rights. When to lodge RTI(Basically the purpose) etc .

Unless it doesn't become a facility like you get the ticket status information through an SMS, till then it is just an another act for the most of the people.

Dr sahab, you are very right, infact, certain neccesary info like knowledge of our constitution,RTI, Police, punchayats/municipal committee, traffic rules, moral obligations, social norms, our traditions etc should be included in the general awareness of our scool/college level.

Bhai Deepak, your point is true but the real issue will be left behind if we start discussing marits/demarits,use/misuse.I think if public get more aware of the act than its misuse may be reduced. please donot mind my comments, regards

Urmila ji, those who are clean cannot be subjected to any kind of harassment. Certainly for those who are corrupt and dubious, it is big embarrassment. You would agree it is a very powerful tool in the hands of a common man and the coming generations would realize its importance.

Friend,

You are absolutely right.

The school/college level curricula needs overhauling, and that too at the earliest, to make it more relevant to the fast changing Indian society.

Regards

rightly said by Dr.Rajpal.......RTI provides vast oppurtunities to avail information frm the public offices.......and its very positive point is that now we students can check our answer sheets from universities and can better evaluate ourselves.....as RTI is a transparent process so chances of corruption are sleek....

There may be some cases of misuses of RTI Act (as noticed personally by you) but this does not mean that it has its merits which certainly outweigh demerits. Instead of scrapping it, public awareness campaign about the RTI Act is the need of the hour.

Rajpalji, it is true indeed. You can cross check this with any of your known ones in Panchayti Raj deptt in rohtak/panipat area.
RTI is a useful act, but neither the answer is given with right intention, nor it is given on time. Sad but true!

Some more activism seems to be on these days and no SPO can afford to overlook the time limit as appellate authorities are taking serious view of the delay on their part.
