Islam, my Muslim friends are fond of saying, is not just a religion but a way of life. What they mean is that the guardians of Islam must concern themselves not just with questions of morality and ethics -- as every religion professes to do -- but also with an adherent's material life.

Even so, it seems going too far when an obscure maulvi chooses to condemn Sania Mirza because she chooses to play tennis in short skirts.

This has been generally condemned. Sania Mirza has been hailed as one of India's (regretfully few) sports stars, and the maulvis have been asked to keep their opinion to themselves. Even the All India Muslim Personal Law Board says his description of Sania Mirza's behaviour being immodest is unwarranted interference and uncalled for.

Anyone who follows the sport knows that a woman playing tennis has no choice but to wear clothing that offers as little impediment to speed and flexibility as possible -- or cede an advantage to opponents. The days are long gone since a Suzanne Lenglen or a Helen Wills Moody could win championships wearing skirts that fell well below the knee.

So, then, are we all agreed that the maulvi was wrong?

Ghaghari Parha Ke

Bhai Kaptan sahab.....inne GHAGHARI pahar ke khellan dyo......Dekh ke mhari tai harr ke te appne din yaad aa jyange. Ha...ha..ha............Saniya playing US open in GHAGHARi. Even the Idea of raising this non-issue by some hard cores is in bad taste. Utter stupid. Sania please Rock on!

Indeed...

It does not matter whether we agree or not.

The most important point is whether the 'Maulvi' is ready to agree or not. And as far as I know, he would never agree, because if he agrees then his 'Fatwe ki Dukan' will shut down. The mindset has to change my friend.

It is common knowledge that 90% of 'Dalals' operating in red light areas in most towns are Muslims and maximum number of prostitutes belong to their own community. I am not saying this but proven statistics are testimony to this fact. The Maulvis would never ever issue 'Fatwa' on eradicating prostitution or Muslim girls acting in films because the big bucks are in these two professions.

Let me give you two examples. My advance apologies to those who don't like me giving personal examples.

While being posted in Kupwara (J&K) I used to interact a lot with the shopkeeprs of a small market located within a HQ boundary. And since I am from the JAK LI Regiment I used to get away by making all kinds of statements. One of the most discussed topics used to be 'Kashmir Problem' and I always maintained that firstly there is no problem and even if there is, I can solve it in a month. On being asked how, my answer used to be that I would withdraw the Indian Army from the Kashmir Valley on only one candition that it be reoccupied by the Punjab & Baluch Regiment of Pak Army. And I also used to tell them that once the Pak Army does to you what they did to Bangladershis, then you would realise the importance of Indian Army. I used to tell them a couple of other things but I can't repeat it here. (Samjne wale samaj jayenge) Believe you me, not one Kashmiri wanted
to be left at the mercy of Pakistani Army.

The other example: I had a discssion with a Shiv Sena leader. I told him point blank that Bal Thakeray has lost his wits and told him how he can revive his party's fortunes if he followed my advice. And my advice was simple. Since the Muslims in India don't want a Common Civil Code, we should apply Shariat Law to all Muslims, irrespective of the Indian Constitution. And the Hindu majority should ensure that the Shariat Law is implented in letter and spirit. And implementing it is simple. Chori karega to Haath kat do, gaddari karega to Gardan!!! This way we will give them complete freedom to practice their religion.

Frankly,I would never watch tennis if the girls playing the game were not good looking and dressed appropriately. Hum to Bhai Christ Evert ke bahut bade fan hua karte, phir Steffi Graf ke hue!!! To be frank Sania does not impress me much.

Ye Fatwe jari karna wagera ek dhanda hai jo ye Maulvi log chalate hain. The business of religion is like any other religion.

Regards,

JS Malik

Bhai Log !

When you guys even bother a fraction of your brains to such non-issues, you guys sound like the fanatics islamists. Ignore just everyone who dictates others liberites. The only reason these people successfully dictate our lives is becuase, we care to give a damn to thier F-ed up opinions. Think again.

YE BAAT THEEK NAHIN HEI......YE KYA HO RAHA HEI....YE KYA HO RHA HEI...???????? ..I heard something like.....Christ Evert...? Kya tastes hein Jagmohan sir...theek hei ?

some people don't leave a chance to prove that how stupid they are.
how can we ignore the fact that sania mirza is bringing all the glory to india
we all sud be proud of her. at this age where ppl don't realize there dreams , she is already thru and a inspiration for all the young girls and boys.
sania is just rocking . we should encorage her so that she can come to top ten .
we all know this is not something new.it had happened previously also.
can we imagine serena willam wearing burqa and playing tennis ,then why sania?

Well very interesting topic from dress code point of view. Why go anywhere else just look in ourselves. Do you think there is any lack of talent in our jat girls not to be the best in the world in sports? One of the major reasons is dress code we cannot see our girls wearing beaknis to swim or shorts to run and soforth. Just think people with cool mind I maybe wrong but I feel that is one of the reasons we dont promote our girls in sports. They have the drive and guts to reach the top if given the right conditions and encouragement in this area.

Very true

Yes ofcourse....Our girls are second to none but somehow JATS had been always very protective of their females and there were reasons for that as they had been fighting Moghuls all through and then had to face British Raj.....[generally these idiots use to remain on the look out for good looking girls] and may be to protect the honour, our people had to resort to GHOONGHAT,PARDDA and other restrictions on our females. But times have changed and our girls are breaking free and taking on this world with grit and determination.Wish them good luck and lots of succcess. Thanx Baljit bhai.

very well said baljeet bhai!!
i still remember the state of affairs in our school days during the inter-state swimming championship which invariably used to take place at our school (sports school rai).No swimmer other then our school girls used to participate that meet wearing swimming costumes.Girls from other district used to participate in salwar and suit and mind u some of them were really good.i remember one girl she was from jind she swam in salwar kurta and she gave the great fight to our swimmer. All the male participants including there male couches used to ogle at the girls who used to participate in swimware.
i wonder that the state of affairs have improved to any level on those fronts if these so called judges(self proclaimed) of dress code are try to enforce burga for the natinal sporting (tennis) idol.

I just cann't stop myself going into 'imagination mode' to see how it will be if Serena/Sania playing in Burqa ;-), Few things baffles me though:
1. Do we need an extra instructor/judge who should shout high when ball comes to their court so they can unveil and hit the ball. Obviously all media coverage will be blackedout during that brief moment they unveils to hit the ball ;-)
2. OR these maulvis will invent some-kind of high-tech burqas - which will allow these players to see the ball? - Court sizes should also be reduced so that they can cover all corners from the restricted movement that burqa will allow them.

Religions should provide a philosophy for life. And that can only provide a broad-level direction how a society in general should work. The finer implementation of these directions MUST be allowed to vary with the society timeline - unless we want to be outdated ;-)

No they won’t need to unveil all the time. They do have all sorts of ‘high tech’ burqas with a lil’ space left open for the eyes to peep out..:D …Imagine!!! Geeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz…….

Quite agree Col. Chacha. Those little tennis skirts quite appropriately
flap up and down (and up and down and up...ahem...) with every bounce. :D
I think those little skirts are very important for freely flowing unhindered shots.
I am all for them :D in the spirit of reaching full sporting potential. ;)

Regarding Sania, wish she'd get rid of that Koka on her nose....ewwwwwwww !!

Mallika Ji, aap kahan ho ? Please, aap bhi tennis khel lo....please....

Sania Mania

Pl read the Col's post very carefully. He is 100% right. The day call the mullahs' bluff, common muslims would the most relieved people.

The maulvi who issued this fatwa commented, "The kind of dress they wear leaves nothing to imagination" . ............ Well, even at that old age, the biggest pastime of the maulvi is IMAGINATION .
No wonder so many Arabs come calling to Hyderabad and buy off young girls. ... What a sickness of mind !

It is so Unfortunate

Well, the Fatwa by Maulavis is all right as they need media attention and thus need a topic to be thrown open. What has bothered me the stance taken by the government of India and the ministry of sports. Not even a statement? If there was one, I am sorry I did not read that. We as the people would like to know what the Government thinks about the statement issued by these Maulvis.

As far as game goes, I don't bother what they wear, so long they play well. Many young promising players have been lost in wilderness because they failed to set their priorities right when it came to concentrting between glamour and the sports.

Sania is a talented and hard working girl. We all must encourge her, rather than bothoring her about the dress code. The government needs to take a stand and ask these Maulvis to shut up.

Govt will do nothing

Why should the Govt. take panga with a large VOTE BANK ? Specially when state like Bihar is going to polls. Maulavis will call the shots if a common law is not inacted in this country[CCC]

That is the Irony

Dear Dahiya Ji,

That is the irony and misfortune of mother India, where Vote Bank remains the prime goal. Since we need a government which has conscious. If making a good decision and telling the Fanatics to "Shut Up" is called a Panga, then let it be. You can only win the election and not rule. While diplomacy and politics may be very complicated things, the truth has always been admired by the majority of people.

Alternatively, what Col Malik has said, that let us implement the Shariet Law on all those in letter and spirit, who feel that the Shariet Law is above the Indian Constitution. Unless the government start telling the Fanatics to "Shut Up" the very fabric of our democracy and constitution would be compromised sooner or later. Earlier we do better it is.
