Hi!! All,

Well, Its matter of pride & certainly time for celebration as we've won Cricket World Cup couple of days ago.....but the HYPE these cricket players are getting & Janta goin ga ga over team, is that worthwhile??? just read about yesterday Welcome home celebration of so called national heros in Mumbai.....how ppl r goin crazy over team & politicans that too were not losin ny chance of publicity & Govt and Cricket Board they are giving away Crores n Crores of Money extravagantly to the team like anything!!

On the other side....recently so called National team of National game HOCKEY won Asia Cup in invincible style....but not a single penny given to players forget about the appreciation n treatment...even here on Jatland the very thread bout Asia Cup hardly got much attention n merely there're aroud 10 replies!!:(:(

I agree ppl here in India are crazy about Cricket like anything....its more then a game....its a relegion!! Its ok but why other games neglacted like anything here in India even our so called National game...every other coutry including Cricket playing nations like Australia, England, South Africa always pay heeds to other sports too that why they keep wining madels in Olympics.... n here in India with more then 1 Billion population hardly 1 madel is what we get in 4 year...why so partility, why so disregard of other sports????:mad::mad:

Nowadays Cricket is a big lucraticve business.....even industrialist & politicians are also attached with the game n it'll keep earnin like anything.

Just read a news today that Indian Hockey team is on Hunger Strike to protest disregard behaviour of Govt...I support their protest as if u dont appreciate players hard work n dont reward them with atleast fame n money.....why they'll perform afterall they also need to earn bread n butter for their family....they dont merely play for fun!!!

I remember couple of years ago...old players of Hockey started a national league named PHL to take Hockey in mainstream....but its kinda flop as neither ppl paid any attention nor much sponsors!!


Well, I can go on n on but I feel there's no future for our national game...no matter if they earn Gold madel in Olympic but it'll be neglacted always....so I guess our national game should be changed to CRICKET and also ban all other sports!!!

Thanks for bringing up such a relevent topic for discussion... jo kuch tune keha hai upar wo sola ane sach hai bhai..cricket to aur countries maie bi khela jata hai lakin yeha par jis tareh ka cricket khela ja reha hai wo to kehi nai hai re bhai.. jiti to hockey team bi thi lakin kisi ne jyadha dhyan nai diya..newspaper ne bi ek din inside pages maie story chaap di ...... wo bi chak de india movie thode hi din pehle release huwi thi isliye...warna to shyed itni jageh bi nai milti becharo ko.. cricket wale thread maie to commentry kar kar ke bawale ho liye....Cricket walo ki to haarte hai to bi news banti hai aur jitne par to ashman sir par utha lete hai.. ek taraf to govt. bi hockey ko national game ke darje se hata rehi hai to dusri taraf in cricketers par rewards ki bachoor... hadh hoti hai pakshpaat ki bi..

is attitude ki vajeh se koi bi player yaa youth baki games maie career banane ki sochta bi nahi hai...aur kyo soche..after all sabko apna pait bi palna hai..ghar bhaar bi chalana padata hai.. aur parinam samne hai..olympics maie ek adha brown medal jeet kar tasali de lete hai... sharam ki baat hai bhai...

lakin bhai yeh India hai aur yeha par bhed chaal ki hi puja hoti hai ... don't except for rationality in action...

Well, Media.....god save!!....frm the movment India won the cup.....these rational media be it ny medium...TV Chanel,News Paper,Web portals all r flooded with Cricket,Cricket n Cricket!!!

Seems like Media was waitin for the movment....kab hum cup jeete aur kab hum Celebrations ki flood si laa deve :p :p :p

I remember one of my friend called up that night n said....ab kya hoga??? we should bann Cricket now on....thats extreme...we won it....cant get better then it :rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: nahi to ab Janta ka Hang-over next big defeat tak nahi utrega!! hehehehehhehehe!!!

God save poor Sportsmen & Sports in this country!! :eek::eek:

I don’t have any problem with media or Indian people for going crazy over cricket world cup win. But I have big problem with central and state govts. All states govts have announced big prizes for cricketer but they never announced any prizes for hockey players, except some govt jobs. I totally agree with hockey players that govt is giving the step-motherly treatment.

If our govt start giving equal importance to all sports, I feel that condition of Indian hockey will also improve. Indian hockey will also start getting funds and sponsors.

Indeed, govt is givin the step-motherly treatment not only to Hockey players but all the oher sports except Cricket...thats why am sayin we should change our national game to Cricket!! why show off when the very govt paying no repsect to the National Game!!:mad:

Relevent: The Core Issue

Dear Members,

I good topic for discussion. All of you know that I am a sports fan be it cricket, hockey or basketball. The issue raised is extremely relevent. However we need to find out why it is so?

1. How many of us have written about Hockey on this forum itself as compared to Cricket?
2. How many of us bought viewing channels to watch Hockey matches? (In US you have to buy viewing these matches, sale of cricket matches is way up, while I have no news of any one buying the viewing channels for hockey matches).
3. If that be so, it becomes a supply and demand problem rather than Cricket and Hockey problem. Politicians across the world are businessmen. They want to invest money on popular things and not moral things.

The problem here is that these politicians are distributing the tax payers money to one game and giving nothing to other game. If it is the question of investment they just can't invest tax payers money for their personal political gains.

Our people in India need to bring these politicians to the national debate on TV and ask then as to why they are giving different treatment to different teams? We all need to support other sports people for this be it Hockey or any Soccer.

I think in future, I doubt...situations will improve :rolleyes: cuz as u mentioned politicians will keep intervenin for their self benifit!!

Just see Australia n China....they are always ahead in almost ever sports, we should learn from them to!!

I watched whole Asia cup & always luv to watch every game but not cricket n golf....cuz I dont hv that much patience to sit for that long....but 20-20 form of the Cricket is really gud n found intresting :)

We must respect n pay due heeds to every Sports!!

English Football league is famous world over and players salaries run into millions of pounds.

Cricket has not got the same status here.

FA is very rich in comparison to ECB.

GB Hockey hardly gets any coverage even when they win.

Its all commercial end of the day.
 
All games should be promoted. Jitu has brought up good topic for discussion and I think if we consider popularity then its a good idea to make cricket National Game. After all India is a democracy and change should be allowed on the demand of majority.

yup mor or less to sum degree i agree...first d initiative has to start frm govt end...

n as far as media role is being balemed, lemme say media did no step motherly treatment to hockey. asia cup news was broke in prime time n by all means d moment was fosterted...infact there were programmes by ppl like rajdeep on such repercussions of chak de. infact after movie chak de, media talked a lot abut hockey. (hw cum u guys ddnt see? thou u must hav seen every movement of mahi carvan..?, thts d reason enuf y hockey is a step child, hw amny of u burst crackers on d eve of asia cup?)...media has played its part well enuf...it's d turn of public n govt nw.

nw d moot point...Y hockey was a mania uptill 70s n nt nw? coz hockey then continuously kept deprciating itself one aftr another defeat as cricket was doing lately after world cup debacle...

wit n watch few mor wins in hockey, n i assure it will b equal hysteria.

on contrary if crickey wud hav been a loser in t20, it was also heading same way as hockey...if i go by my observance d mania of cricet is nt as much as it used 2 b whn i was in school n college...nw ppl go crazy only over crucial matches...

u kno y tennis, F1 (karthikyen) n cricket r a rage in india? coz these r global sports...probably thts y they grab mor attention hockey being an asian game is nt so poular all over d world...bt if they perform better in future too, they will also hog limelight...n d proof is chak de movie. it ddnt hav cricket in it...

n dis bhed chaal of worshipping cricket n neglecting hockey is nt only in india, pakistan also has same trends

moral of d story is: winning makes d differnce...dis one win in asia cup is just d beginning of rising of phoenix...rise a bit more n winds will blow under wings

Hockey is not an Asian game. The Brits were the ones who brought it along to India. And hockey, for that matter, is more global than cricket.

See Jit, it doesn't make much of a difference whether hockey will remain our national game or not. Neither field hockey nor cricket is an indigenous sport so no point in fretting over the word 'National'.

And it is not some India-centric problem (if at all it is). In Japan, Sumo is their national sport but baseball and football get the maximum attention. If cricket is ruling the roost in India, it is on the receiving end in countries like England and Australia where, despite being the national sport, it lags far behind football and Aussie rules football respectively in terms of popularity.

Coming to the "world-cup winning" cricketers reaping a rich harvest, they were the same bunch who bore the burnt of public fury after the first round-exit at the ICC Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean. Remember the same Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who is now cynosure of all eyes, had had his house vandalised after India lost to B'desh.

When was the last time a hockey player faced public's wrath? If not many give a $hit to their achievements, fewer take any notice of their failure (failures, in fact, far outscore the achievements on astro-turf!). Obscurity has its benefits too and there's a price to be paid for popularity.

I am not saying the hockey player's shouldn't be paid well. They should be. That is for the Government and IHF to take care of, but not at cricket's or, for that matter, any other sport's expense.

Sports looses!

...First off, as a sportsperson and an even bigger sports fan, for me ANY discussion that tries to glorify one sport over the other (or compares, ridicules, dissects either or both) is really sad!...

So Jit, let's not make the discussion about 'IF' Cricket can (have the fan following, accolades, glory etc. etc.), WHY NOT Hockey!!?!!.... I think the dicussion is more benifitted by simply asking "WHY not Hockey!!?!!"...

And THAT there should be the real discussion here, and at the regional, national level! Period.

For now...I will leave this post to that, because if I continue here it would dilute the impact of these simple words/suggestion.

But I shall add more thoughts and concerns in the other following ones. This is a good thread (albeit wrong title as I said) and actually to my mind does not have one straight simple answer... it is a culmination of a lot of factors!

HOCKEY ko CRICKET to kya kisi GAME jaisa SAMMAAN bhi nahi milta.

Ab to politicians ko SHARM aani bhi band ho gayi hogi.
Wa kya hai ke insaan ek limit hi sharm kar paata hai uske baad besharm ho jaata hai. Jaise humaare politicians.


Ab time aane waala hai jab humaare neta log bhi CRICKET khelne lag jaayenge.

Here is something else that irks me no end...EVEN as an obvious huge Cricket FAN:

Yuvraj Singh hit six sixes.
So Great! Loved the way he did it (all perfect cricketing shots) and hence a match winning performance...
More importantly as a spectator; It was Exciting to watch no doubt (and the format quite obviously supported that aggresion)!
So cool, say six cheers to Yuvi!!! ;)

But then, stop there itself.....
How can it be worth Rs 1 crore in country where 80 per cent of the people are going to die without earning or saving a crore? :mad:

Where is the sense of proportion?

...and so in THAT respect...I am totally with you JIT on the over hype meeted to one versus other.....

ps. and then the worshipping of Dhoni; he did a great job, and I was the first one to point that out on the other 'Twenty20' thread...BUT don't forget that same crowd demolished Dhoni's under-construction home in Ranchi sometime back!?!....
 
I love Hockey (or should I say LOVED hockey)...as a kid, would try and watch all those close matches, especially with India up against Pakistan (they are our favourite rivals, ain't they?)... :)

BUT then somewhere, someplace something happned, that probably happened to most of the other fans like me :o....Indian Hockey never grew, never tried to flourish furthur...never tried to regain the lost glory..... it just seemed to wither away with one bad performance after the other........... losing even at the Asian levels, .............while forget at the international level where teams like Australia, Netherlands and Germany (relative new comers to the format) could simply dance rings around our players!...

The Indian players were never properly coached to the changing rules, style and pace of the modern field hockey, the practise stadiums were never quickly transformed to the astro-turf and equipments, kits etc. that everyone else in the rest of the world was practising with... the Indians at the international arena simply looked jet-lagged at that level of competitions (and still do)!!!

...and so that brings me to the part of the point I am trying to make here; every Nation loves having a sport where they can say that they match the best, and can stand looking in the eye of the opponent!...hence in comes CRICKET!

A game, where the level of skills and competitive edge of the rivals was matched by oure players; and lo and behold suddenly the sport was like a bolt for the hungry sports fans! ...and they lapped it up with glee!......

Now any smart person will tell you, if you are good at something; IF YOU HAVE IT- FLAUNT it!!!
And THAT, dear members is what we crazy Cricket Indian fans have been doing, and that's what has been happening on the Indian sports landscape....................

Asian Championships (Hockey) and the Nehru cup (Football) is still not the exposure at the International level arena that a World Cup (twenty20 or 50overs One day International World cup) brings!... and that is the sad but true fact!

We need to up our gamesmanship in these other sports (and why just Hockey, what about Football, Volley-ball, Basketball etc.!?!)... we need to find the spark in this billion plus Nation to make kick-ass, cutting edge, competitve and killer instinct sportpersons!

...and then.....or should I say when and only when we achieve that same kind of successes in (any other) sport is when we can turn on the imagination of a sport Hungry nation!

"A leading state-owned bank in India, the State Bank of India, has announced that it will pay half a million rupees ($12,500) to each member of India's world beating hockey team!..."

There you go....daer aaye, per durust aaye! ;)

Not to be accused of only bringing you the Cricket pictures... here attached are the pictures of the Asian Hockey Champs! (For those who don't know- The Indian Hockey team had trounced the super strong Asian Giants South Korea by 7-2 in the finals on the 9th earlier this month)
