Worthy members, i just want to have your views on this important issue as to whether the professionals working abroad should return to India after a resonable stint abroad to contribute for the land he was born at. Ofcourse it is an indvidual matter and hence will depend on so many considerations but still question warrants deliberations. If you say that they must return then the second question comes to my mind is...AT WHAT STAGE OF THEIR CAREER ?

In fevor of return

Really a debatable issue and need of the hour. Thanks dahiya saheb to bring this topic on this plateform. I am in the fevor of returning the NRI to their motherland but at what time ? it might be vary from person to person and individual's life aim what he wants to do in life? Because demand and need of individual is different to other. As there is no limit of wealth earning, whatever u earned, u shall find that lust increase double for more. So financial criteria does not matter in case u want to return . But i think ten years abroad can make u financial independent and secure ( Roots need only some water after they will grow and flourish automatically).
After returning other than the social service or social revolutionary work every one wants that he must start his own small business , most of the case no one wants to do job in india. So now comes the problem that he has to face . There are some basic problems that a NRI must have to face and he afraid.

(1) NRI does not feel confident and secure in starting a business due to the corruption established in our beuracracy system. Even from an electricity connection, phone connection to income tex office everywhere u cant do ur job without giving undertable money.

(2) Nowadays most of the fake dowry case (IPC 498A) are against NRIs, just to get out the money from them. And its very strange that some case are like that NRI husband demand to 2~3 lakhs as a dowry from our daughter and he harassed her for this. IN these most of the cases the income of NRI husband is more than 1 lakh, so its a mockery of IPC laws, whats the style of abuse , no body cant do anything, these are nonbailable warrants. Some times ago DIG punjab states that the dowry cases against NRIs are increasing day by day and instead of knowing that these are fake we cant do anything we are bind by law. Now we can do only that in punjab arrest warrant against NRI in dowry case will be issue after primary investigation.
So NRI dont feel that even their fundamental rights are not secure in india ( may be i m wrong) , to get all these u need political power along with strong financial background.

There are some other minor issues like infrastructure, childeren future like this but i think they are not main concern. These are my personal views, feel free to arguments and debate it in more appropriate way.

In today's technology world, places have lost relevance. It does not really matter where one physically lives and where one invests. One can live anywhere in the world and can still make a very significant contribution to one's motherland or fatherland whatever one decide to call it. Its one's conviction to contribute what is more important. Having our share of business overseas is equally important if we have to make overall progress. There are many ways one can contribute to one's motherland and this is no universal approach to this. If Bill Gate can run his business all over the world, I am sure a dedicated NRI also can contribute in a very significant manner for the upliftment of his fellow brothers and sisters back home..Its just a matter of logistics more than moving the places.

Dev Sir, Thanks for bringing this topic up. This is a kind of topic which can easily flare up the emotions. I will try and put the pros and cons of working abroad forever (I don't claim that I have covered all of them).
Pros:
1. Quality of life: The quality of life in the developed countries is definitely better than in India. Good infrastructure, less pollution etc etc.

2. Money: There is still a big difference in salaries earned by professionals working in India compared to the ones working abroad.

Cons:
1. Subtle biases: There are laws to protect you against discrimination but bias in more subtle form is there. You are more likely to be asked for a ticket in train and your car is more likely to stopped by cops if you are an Asian.

2. Cost of living: The cost of living is higher compared to India. You may be earning more but the house is going to cost you more, your kid's education is going to cost more.

3. Family visits: Its tough for your family members because of visa restrictions.

4. People tend to remain Indians at heart. I have met some people who have lived abroad for 30-35 years, they are citizens of that country but they still consider themselves as Indians. And I believe this is even unfair to the country they are living in.

Personal Take
I think its good to work abroad for exposure and to make some quick bucks but it makes more sense to return after a while (for atleast IT professionals). The job scenario is improving in India and you can make money here also. I do agree that most of Indian IT companies are into service but of late a lot of companies are doing product development too. The infrastructure is improving though very slowly.

Do put your comments.

Thanks
Kismat

I think it is best for individuals as well as the nation if everyone makes decisions based on their self-interest. Decisions should not be made based
on some sense of obligation. If a nation seeks our contributions then it should
make it appealing (and in our self-interest) for us to want to contribute.

I think that is the bottom line in reality as well, whether we admit to it or not.

If it is the matter of contribution to the motherland then I believe one should stay where one can contribute significantly no matter where. It is not absolutely necessary to be physically present in one’s country to pitch in radical efforts for the development.

Alright, I know I might sound a bit haywire for some of you and the reason is my thought process is kind of biased or I should say influenced by the kind of arena I’m into. What could be better than researching and working in a super infrastructure (the obvious benefits..:) ) and then developing stuff having applications for the entire humankind not just your respective nation. How about that?

You are right. Everybody is right. In fact, everybody is always right.

Vinod, this is what you observe, but actually it is not what you observe but this is what is exposed to the question you asked as to ‘why’ and not the complimentary question which you excluded and didn't ask as to ‘why not’???...:D Geeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzz..

Poonam ji, its not just about the contribution to the motherland but to look at things as a whole especially in context of improving (though slowly) opportunities in India. And in the end what matters is how an individual look at things and its very much a personal decision. mere ko nahi pata ki aap kis specific field mein research karte hain isliye mein specifically comment nahin kar sakta. mein maanta hoon ki pehle MNCes apna back office kaam hi India mein karti thi but of late they have started moving some good work. And then there are some good start ups which do Research & Development if not only research.

Is this a question that should be discussed, Its everyone's personal desicion and one may have several metric points to decide one way or other, and finally make his/her own choice. The answer is "INDIVIDUAL CHOICE",there is no 'should one or should not one'. And at least I think that I do not have to justify my desicions to anyone else other than those who matter to me.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the question my dear. Yes the topic is still worth debating irrespective of what you feel.

Ashok, I believe the question is definitely worth discussing. No one is expecting you to justify your decision but understandings each other's perspective may very well help people refine their "metric points". aap nahin to koi mere jaisa informed decision le payega :)
Cheers,

First of all, there is no dearth of professionals in India warranting return of professionals from abroad. They should think of returning to India only if they are confident of creating more jobs in India otherwise they should cement their places wherever they are and keep remitting valuable foreign exchange if they love their motherland. With the emergence of technology the world has become a big village and the jobs world over are up for grabing. Citizens of whichever country will grab these jobs will ultimately benefit.

Well then the question should be "What are the factors that affect a person's desicion to stay abroad or return to India" rather than some crap morality question of "Should one return to India or not".

And if that's the question then the answer is "Will a person gain more if he or she returns to India or will he or she gain more by staying abroad" , I don't believe in the thing that many people say that will a person be able to help the society if he/she comes back. Believe it or not its never about society its about self interest. Its pure economics. People might say things which sound politically correct but the real reason is self interest and that should be the reason. Self interest is the law of nature.

Now to determine various costs and benefits of the said gains thee can be various different factors such as
1. Where does a person find more growth opportunities
2. How much can a person learn and earn at a particular place
3. What are the costs (staying away from family)
4. Where does one want to be in one's future
5. What about one's kids, will one be comfortable with kids growing up in a culture that is pretty different
6. What opportunities does India give and whats the opprotunity cost

there can be a lot more questions like that and answer to these questions (which will be different for everyone) will help a person in making the desicion.

To sum it up "Where does one gain the most" is the answer.Gain can be in various forms, its not only monetary gain, gain can be personal professional or otherwise and everyone has his/her own pricing of any of these.

These are two entirely differnt questions
1. Should means what a person is obligated to do
3. What factors means the criterias on which a person can decide
