You may find the question "crap" but we have had good comments on this from different people. Lets not go into wording of the question and give a chance to interested people to put their thoughts.
Cheers

If you still don't understand the difference between these two questions, then I think its not worth my time to explain it further. Anyway it doesnt matter.

I was back home for Diwali. Bhiayon! I missw it like anything now. I didnt miss it for the past few years I was away. But now I miss it terribly. Funy thing is that, while I was there, I missed the US.

Whatever. I see a plenty of reasons to go back. Things have changed a lot. Theres prosperity in the air. But still, at the end of the day, it should be an individual choice. No decision is a bad decision.

My dear Neeraj, i am more than sure that people away from India too must be contributing a lot in their own way for sure.

Why these professionals go to foreign countries ..??

Firstly, with obvious reason of earning more money.

Secondly, after going there the standard of living one sees is far better then one gets even in high socities over here. And every one wishes to have good standard of living.

Third, though not that important, is excitment to be at new place.

The only deterent is,
first, cost of living (but person earns in equal proportion)
second, not so socially active friend circle.( most end up being alone. daily activity being going to office and back to home)

This all I my self have faced. Being in London for over 5 months and in switzerland for a week it clearly shows the difference. The life one lives is of really good quality.

Most going out end up getting cetizenship of the respective country.
Moreover, the thinking of people returning to India for a short visit have changed quite a bit. Recently, one of my friends(pursuing MS) who returned to india for vacation. His first reaction, after seeing traffic n polution, was where I am. He forgot he had gone to US just a year back.
I met a software professional in switzerland, staying outside india for over 4 years, was reluctant to return to india for obvious reason for bad traffic and pollution. However, he confessed he himself used to break all traffic rules in when was in india.

I would like to link this to people migrating to cities from villages. Why these people have come to cities? Obviously, to earn a better living. How many of these have returned back to villages? If the person has come over to cities alone then ther is hi possiblilityof him going back to village (so is for people going to foreign countries). And if he has his famly with him the count on him he would never return.

When one has not thought of asking people to permanently come to villages, I guess same should be for people in foreign land. It should be totally left on the individual. If one thinks of helping the community, he would do so being at foreign place. And if one wishes to not do any thing for the community, he would not do even while being at heart of the land.

So I feel there is no strong reason to call professional to return back. As its the individual who has to live for his life and he best judges for himself on how to lead it.

Dev uncle why dont you start a poll on this thread to call all members to vote their viepoints.
options could be
Strong YES
Maybe Yes
can't say (individuals choice)
Maybe no
Strong NO

Neeraj,
Though people living abroad may not go out of their way to contribute (even people living in their motherland don't) but they do contribute in different ways, most obvious being the money they remit back home.

Vinod,
I do believe that we behave differently on different occasions even when we are abroad. When Indians go to some western function (where people are mostly non-desis) they behave quite well but the same people will chatter constantly when go to some desi function. Who is going to respect us if we don't respect ourselves. Traffic and pollution are a big problem and I do think some steps are being taken (Delhi's air is much cleaner compared to what it was few years back). On a personal note, mein jab bhi India jaata hoon mere ko bahut apna apna lagta hai.

Cheers,
Kismat

Whats contribution u r talking about??

After gone through all the messages in this thread i concluded that most of the members thinks that they can contribute for country developemnt after being out of homeland. But issue is that what types of contribution you are talking about? Is this money ? or some creative thoughts that you put on internet to get rid of the problems that persiste in india? How much population (common men) in india used internet so that you can reach them?

So dear friends i m unable to understand whats contributions you wants to do? If it is only money ( how much u can donate 500/rs or 1100/rs or 5100/rs per year if its like that sorry and thanks for ur offering help or giving us ur contribution ) that matter but does not matter much. India is not in the list of begger countries even in the past we refused to take Sunami aid from international community. We can survive by our own resources. We (indian) need just our return from u (NRI) that we had spend on ur education, security etc. India needs to require some technology from u that u possessed on foreign land. Can anybody transfer the secret technology of ur company or institute provided u stay there ? Rather than ur money we require some voluntary work in villages or city slum areas. Can someone send some volunteers for this ( reqruiting by ur money ) ?

India needs some persons like Dr. Trehan in Escort Heart Institute, Delhi ( now name changed), this man return from foreign with latest heart transplant technology and becomes the first specialist surgeon for heart transplantaion. Now under his guidance there are so many surgeons for it in india.

All ideas of contribution are solicited here .

with regards,
davender

Talking about the contribution of NRI's please read the following article on rediff. It is not 1000 or 500 each year , it is 21.7 billion US dollars.
http://ia.rediff.com/money/2005/dec/08remit.htm?q=tp&file=.htm

NRI are nothing but like India FDI in foreign countries. Its a good investment and now paying good returns. WE should improve our education further and produce more intellectuals so that national needs can be met and also we can send these people overseas. Think of USA in another 20 years when we have 5-10 million Indians there with high income. We will have very strong lobby there and will be able to influence decisions in India's favour.

The following was the feedback from one of my friends who attended a discussion hosted by IIT-M alumni association on "Capitalizing on the Rise of India'.
The panel comprised of an accomplished group of people and it was an engaging session that went well over an hour beyond the end-time. The panel represented VCs, Talent Search firms, Venture Law, Banking, and a couple of top tech companies. The session was 3-hrs long but to keep this short, I'll just point out some key topics that caught my attention -

1) Moving up the value chain -
India has rapidly progressed from a low-cost location, through a service oriented-location, and finally to a value-added economy. A VC thought that most anything that can be done in the US can be done in India (except things that require vast infrastructural sophistication). It started with back-office sofware work but now has moved on to banking, chip design, and business consulting. Nothing new there.

2) Dearth of high-level tech people -
There's no shortage of entry-level engineers in India. The key advantage for people people considering a move to India is that they will enjoy a substantial jump in their roles and responsibilities. The statement was targeted at people with ~10+ yrs of experience. Since India is currently in its growth phase, companies are more willing to try giving larger roles to US-returnees. They thought that India today is remniscent of the excitement that Silicon Valley saw a decade or two ago.

3) Increasing Standard of Living -
Many of us go to India only for vacation and don't get a good feel for how it is to live there. The panel observed that livelihood issues - housing, motgages, schools, hospitals, etc.- have made big leaps. It may be unrealistic to expect US-like lifestyle all across the country, overnight. But small pockets of urban areas already look a great deal like the US in all respects (certainly cost-wise). Also, the average engineer has a better standard of living and more disposable income in India. But pay scales are all across the board (not as deterministic as in the US). Key difference is that one generally moves from a middle-class life in the bay area to an upper-class lifestyle in India.

4) Tech and also non-tech sectors are growing by leaps and bounds -
New generation of consumers with large disposable incomes is increasing the market for secondary, non-tech industries (like motgage, financing, auto, airlines etc).

5) Growth reaching beyond metro areas, although a bit slower -
GE, the pioneer of India-outsourcing, is now taking the next step by entering into the creation of satellite townships (called 3rd and 4th tier cities in biz talk). They want to create whole new tech cities that will alleviate the problems they face in urban India - congestion, high wages, and employee attrition.

7) Retail market will see big growth -
Currently the Prime Minister is working towards allowing foreign retailers like Walmart and Office Depot to allow India operations. Needless to say, this is a huge opportunity and big retailers are eagerly waiting for the flood-gates to open (I personally am not so sure this is a good thing for India, specially Walmart's entry).

6) Urban traffic woes are unlikely to ease anytime soon -
Bangalore traffic will still suck a few years out. So stop complaining about 101.

Few more interesting questions that I have only a fleeting memory of. Overall it was a good think-out-loud session. Finally, there was an open invitation from the VC, encouraging people with ideas or those looking for India jobs to come and talk to him.

Thanks for the patient reading.
