JIND/CHANDIGARH: Senior Congress leader Chaudhary Birender Singh has kicked up a controversy with his claim that there are people who shell out up to Rs 100 crore to get a Rajya Sabha seat.

As the BJP latched on to his remarks to accuse Congress of being in the habit of "cutting out deals" and having brought politics in the country to such a "low level", Singh, a Rajya Sabha MP, went into damage control on Monday claiming that what appeared in media was an "entirely wrong version" of what he had said.

Addressing a rally in Jind on Sunday, the Congress leader had said, "Once someone told me that he had a budget of Rs 100 crore to become a Rajya Sabha MP. But when he totalled the expenditure later, he found it was Rs 80 crore and he had ended up saving Rs 20 crore."

"Now you think, a man who succeeds taking the membership of Rajya Sabha by spending 80 crore or 100 crore rupees, what will they think about the poor," he had added.

नई दिल्ली। राष्ट्रमंडल खेल घोटाला, 2जी घोटाला और कोयला घोटाला पर पहले से ही घिरी कांग्रेस नीत संप्रग सरकार की मुश्किलें अब उसके ही एक वरिष्ठ नेता ने बढ़ा दी है। कांग्रेस के पूर्व महासचिव और हरियाणा की राजनीति में गहरी पैठ रखने वाले चौधरी बीरेंद्र सिंह ने दावा किया है कि रेल मंत्री की कुर्सी काबलियत से नहीं बल्कि मेहरबानी से मिलती है। इसके साथ ही उन्होंने कहा कि 100 करोड़ रुपये खर्च कर राज्यसभा का सदस्य बना जा सकता है। कांग्रेस सांसद चौधरी बीरेंद्र सिंह के इस बयान के बाद राजनीतिक गलियारों में तूफान आ गया है। भाजपा ने कहा कि बीरेंद्र के बयान ने कांग्रेस की असलियत देश के सामने ला दी है। इस बीच, बीरेंद्र सिंह ने अपने सफाई देते हुए कहा कि उनके बयान को गलत तरीके से पेश किया गया है।


20 अगस्त की जींद रैली के लिए कार्यकर्ताओं को निमंत्रण देने यमुनानगर आए कांग्रेस सांसद चौधरी बीरेंद्र सिंह का रेल मंत्री न बनने का दर्द आखिरकार बाहर आ ही गया और उन्होंने कहा कि वह प्रदेश कांग्रेस के नेताओं में पहले पायदान पर हैं लेकिन कुर्सी सिर्फ पायदान से नहीं अन्य दानों से मिलती है। हालांकि, यह दान क्या है उन्होंने स्पष्ट नहीं किया। चौधरी के इस बयान पर कई तरह के कयास लगाए जा रहे हैं।


बीरेंद्र सिंह ने दावा किया कि पिछली बार उनका रेलमंत्री बनना तय था लेकिन आखिरी मौके पर उनका पत्ता साफ हो गया। बीरेंद्र सिंह ने कहा कि रेलमंत्री के लिए नाम तय हो गया था, चिट्ठी आ गई थी राष्ट्रपति की, लेकिन रेफरी ने सीटी बजा दी। इतना ही नहीं चौधरी ने कहा कि आज लोग 100 करोड़ देकर राज्यसभा सांसद बन रहे हैं।

उन्होंने कहा कि मुझसे एक व्यक्ति ने कहा कि राज्यसभा सांसद बनने के लिए मेरा बजट 100 करोड़ रुपये का था, लेकिन मेरा काम 80 करोड़ रुपये में ही हो गया। मैंने 20 करोड़ रुपये बचा लिए। हालांकि, यहां भी उन्होंने उस व्यक्ति का नाम नहीं बताया।

इस बीच, कांग्रेस सांसद पीएल पूनिया ने कहा कि राज्यसभा में जो लोग आते हैं वे अपनी समाजसेवा के दम पर आते हैं। उनमें से बहुत से तो ऐसे होते हैं जो 1 लाख रुपये तक नहीं दे सकते, 100 करोड़ तो दूर की बात है। फिर भी, अगर उन्हें किसी विशेष मामले की जानकारी है तो इस बारे में वही कुछ बता पाएंगे।

उधर, भाजपा प्रवक्ता प्रकाश जावड़ेकर ने कहा कि बीरेंद्र सिंह ने जो बात कही है, उससे जाहिर है कि कांग्रेस पूरी तरह से भ्रष्ट है। लोग इस बात को पहले से ही जानते हैं, लेकिन चौधरी के इस बयान उस बात को पक्का कर दिया है।

इस बीच, विवाद बढ़ने के बाद चौधरी सिंह ने कहा कि उन्होंने ऐसा कुछ नहीं कहा था, उनकी बातों का गलत मतलब निकाला गया है।

Hooda wins over Shah

Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda appears to have neutralised his latest detractor in Panipat (Urban) MLA Balbir Pal Shah. Shaw. He had submitted his resignation to Speaker Kuldip Sharma on August 4, charging Hooda with ignoring his constituency in terms of development. Shah has now taken a U-turn and spurned invites from Hooda's bête noires to join them. Shaw who till recently was adamant on his resignation, had now announced that he had been assured that his grievances would be addressed.
The week-long attempts to cajole Shaw are expected to end in a patch-up with Hooda visiting Shah's residence within two or three days. The resignation and subsequent developments have yet again highlighted Hooda's acumen as a master of political strokes. From a bitter critic, Shah has now stated that "Hooda is his younger brother" and he will not harm his interests.
Rajya Sabha MP Birender Singh is believed to have instigated Shah to resign as the two had met at the latter's residence on August 4, shortly before Shah decided to abstain from the Chief Minister?s Iftar party and head for Karnal to hand over his resignation to the Speaker. In less than a week, Shah has come out with a statement that he would not join Birender Singh's or Kumari Selja's camp.
Without naming anyone, Shah has said that people in rival camps are struggling to attain power — someone wants to be in the Union Cabinet while others aspire to be Chief Ministers. "I have no such aspirations; my struggle is purely to seek developmental funds for my constituency". He indicated that he has been assured that projects on Drain No 1 and the issue of 500 dying units would be resolved soon.
It is pertinent to mention that Jagdish Nehra, a former minister and Selja's confidant, had recently approached Shah and asked him to join the Selja camp. Nehra has repeatedly accused the Hooda government of a regional bias. But Shah is believed to have told Selja's emissary that he had no inclination to join any camp. Selja then called Shah and asked him to visit but he politely declined.
The Hooda-Shah truce would now see clearance of development works worth Rs 4.5 crore that have already been got done by Shah without inviting tenders. The BJP had sought a vigilance probe into the issue. Attempts are being made to get the contractors paid without inviting trouble.
It appears the Haryana Congress camps are getting fragmented rather than getting consolidated. Gurgaon MP and another Hooda detractor Rao Inderjit Singh today came up with a remark at a workers' meeting that Birender Singh and Hooda (both cousins) were hand in glove and were taking the people for a ride by acting as if they were at loggerheads.The Birender camp has, however, rubbished Rao Inderjit's suggestion and come up with a statement on IAS Officer Ashok Khemka's report on Robert Vadra. They say this was the Hooda camp's last-ditch effort to create a controversy that would foil Birender Singh's effort to bring Congress President Sonia Gandi to his Jind rally on August 20.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi will not attend the rally at Jind organised by Birender Singh to mark former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s birth anniversary. All-India Congress Committee (AICC) sources today said party general secretary Digvijay Singh would attend the rally instead and represent her. The decision was conveyed to Birender Singh yesterday after he met Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Sonia, in New Delhi.
AICC general secretary in charge of Haryana affairs Shakeel Ahmed and secretary attached to the state Asha Kumari would attend the rally.
The Congress president's office said Sonia had pressing engagements in the capital that day as it would be Rajiv’s birth anniversary.
She will pay homage at Rajiv’s memorial and then attend the launch of the food security scheme at Talkatora Stadium from 11 am. Later in the day, she will attend the Rajiv Gandhi award ceremony.
Though seen as a flash-point between Birender Singh and Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, the rally should not be viewed as a platform for political one-upmanship, said Congress sources.
"The Congress president will be unable to attend the rally due to engagements here. There is no political reason behind her absence. Nothing should be read into this," a senior Congress leader said.
Congress leaders said unnecessary political implications were being attached to an event which Birender Singh organised every year.“Birender holds a function on Rajiv’s birth anniversary every year. This year, he extended an invitation to the Congress president. She accepted it, but her engagements will keep her busy. Where does politics come in?” said a Congress leader.
