An elderly Chinese woman had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole, which she carried across her neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.

For a full two years this went on daily, with the woman bringing home only one and a half pots of water. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it could only do half of what it had been made to do.

After 2 years of what it perceived to be bitter failure, it spoke to the woman one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house."

The old woman smiled, "Did you notice that there are flowers on your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I have always known about your flaw, so I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back, you water them." "For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this beauty to grace the house."

Each of us has our own unique flaw. But it's the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they are and look for the good in them.

Absolutely right point Nupur jee. With due permission i would like to share a bit of my view

Good things have importance in this world because there are bad things. There is happiness becoz there is sorrow. Reward becoz there is hard work and sacrifice. For eg. if you have a cup of tea sitting at your home, it tastes very normal and often uninteresting. On the other hand, pack your bag, go trekking, climb a high mountain, aching muscles, fatigued body, sit on a rock under the starlit sky, chilling breeze, take out your flask and have a hot cup of tea. I can bet this tea would be the best drink you ever had. While chasing luxuries in our life we dont realise the futility of doing that. Everyone wants that cup of tea but most are scared of the mountain that comes before that cup.
Summers of 1994, I remember, me and 10 of my coursemates, while training at the defence academy, had walked about 40-50 kms through the sahyadri hills in the April heat with lot of weight on our backs. At sunset we were in the middle of nowhere in front of a cowshed and a hut. Three out of 11 had fainted from exhaustion. We didnot have any water left. Here this farmer couple gave us a matkaa of water(they would have fetched it from real far) and forcibly offered us food. It was rice and a watery daal made from some type of seeds. Friends, it was the best food i have ever had.

Very True.

Navin, we too had gone on similar routes in Mussorie Hills in 1980 but none of us fainted !!!

But you are right about the satisfaction after hard work. I too remember that in one of the excercises we too ran out of water. The night was hot and humid. Must have been nearer to two in the morning. We found a puddle and since it was an 'Ambush' excercise we went to this puddle one by one and quenched our thirst. In the morning we discoverd that this puddle was nothing but a water hole for buffaloes!!! The buffaloes lay there all day and did what they do in a puddle. Nevertheless the sips of water or whatever it was one of the tastiest we had.

Moral of the story: Better to faint and let the 'Kisan' look after you rather than be awake and drink from a puddle.

well i feel there is a different message in the story. it is all about making best use of what ever you have, even if it is flawed. we all have some flaws in ourselves and sometimes we curse ourselves for that instead of making best use of it. key is to know yourself and turn your weakness into your strength.
now question is which one of the pot was doing better. was it the flawed one or the other? answer to that question lies in how you precieve things and what is your motive. instead of saying what i feel about this i would like to through this question to everyone including nupur.

U HAVE REALLY RITTEN GREAT BUT HAV ESEEN THIS BEFORE ON THIS SITE AS WELL HAD U WRITTEN THIS BEFORE AS WELL. ANY WAY THANKS FOR MOTIVATING EVERYBODY ONCE AGAIN.

Dear All,

Sometimes stories as these need repetition. May be by reading it again and again 'Kisi ko to akal aayegi'. At least I have learnt a great deal from this story.

If I was in the place of that woman, I would have sprinkled seeds on both sides of the pathway. Then I would have carried the pitchers alternatively on each shoulder to water both sides of the path. Flowers would have bloomed along the entire pathway.

How Correct And Still Very Simple Way

my dear Nupur,

Great philosophy and so practical. Thanks a ton for such a useful post.

a poem

JUST A POEM ABOUT HER

Well I hope that you're happy,
now that I wrote this dumb poem for you!
Remember that ugly puppy you saw,
I bought it for you too.

I can almost picture
that stupid grin on you face;
Just make sure you keep that fleabag away from me
when I drop by at your place.

Okay... the truth is
I'm sorry about what I said the other day.
When I called you a pig,
I meant piggish in a nice kinda way.

This is embarassing,
but... er... you're not fat.
In fact, I think you are very pretty.
(Not that I'm gonna marry you or anything like that!)

I just want you to know
that you'll always be my best friend;
and that I'll be there for you from the beginning
till the end.

This really sounds disgusting,
doesn't it?
Promise not to let your sister read this poem,
and give me back my Alanis Morrisette CD by the end of this week!!

Just me,
sarvajeet
